  1. Carrie: If my children were younger I would want you to take pictures of them. GREAT stuff. The only thing I don't especially care for is frames. It seems almost every photo has a frame around it and my personal preference is not to use them. If you give the customers an option to include/exclude frames then you should be fine, IMO.
  2. There are a number of sites and a number of ways to do this sort of thing. SmugMug, Print Room Back Print and Exposure Manager are ones that come to mind off the top of my head. Most offer trial memberships so they are worth checking out. I have experience with SmugMug and Exposure Manager. Originally I was going to use SmugMug -- everything I had read about them sounded great but there's one big flaw for me. Like John I shoot sports and I wanted parents/friends, etc to be able to search by number. SmugMug currently doesn't permit this type of search due to the minimum number of characters you must search (I believe the minimum is 3 or 4 characters).

Since SmugMug wasn't going to work I started looking else where and found Exposure Manager mentioned in one of the groups on flickr. I checked it out and it does permit searching in the manner I want to use so I'm in the process of setting up an account there.

John: I can tell you how I'll be doing things. I'll shoot the event and then create a "gallery" as they are called of all images from that event. When my images are ready to upload I can upload them through a web browser or by using an FTP program, while old school perhaps, I really like this capability. Once the images are online folks can place orders in whatever size prints you offer. The folks at Exposure Manager (and other sites that do this stuff) either print your order and ship it for you or send the order off to the printer where it is packaged and delivered to the customer.

Other features I have found that I like and I thing most sites offer these are:

1 - The ability to sell the actual image file. This would allow you to sell a copy of the JPG file to the customer and then they can crop or print or do whatever they want to do with it.

2 - Self fulfillment. Say you have a very good 4x6 printer and you want to handle those orders yourself. You can configure things so that 4x6 prints you process and other sizes are processed by the web site printers

3 - Retouch service. When you upload your images you may upload a small size, say 800x600. Later you receive an order for a 24X36 print. Instead of trying to print a 24x36 from an 800x600 image you can create a larger image for the printers to use and upload that image when needed. This way you don't have to do all of your final touches to an image until after it has been sold.

  3. I own the 200mm f/2.8L lens and love using it for sports photography. I wouldn't think it would be that good of a lens for your trip to Vietnam. Unless you really want to add another lens to your collection I would rent one. I know lensprotogo.com has the 70-200 and 200mm lenses for rent.
  4. Amy: It looks like you used flash on a lot of the photos. Are you using a built-in flash or one installed in the hot shoe? If you're using one installed in the hot shoe see if you can find a setting for fill flash. I think I like #46 the best.
  5. Ross: I connect my camera to my computer so I can shoot remotely. When shooting remotely I can control the camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed from the computer instead of having to set them on the camera. This is great for testing out new cameras or new lenses, etc. As soon as you take the shot it is downloaded to the computer and you can see the results on a much larger screen.
  6. Michael:

First off from one vet to another - THANK YOU!

Next - Define "MBTA" and "KMA" I know the military has a ton of acronyms but I have no idea what you and lauren are talking about.

Finally the critique - Very good stuff. The crowd looks like they are having fun and not give that "Oh God not another stupid photo" look so that's very good. Personally I'm not crazy about tilted shots and there seems to be a few in there. Otherwise, go for it man. Shoot the weddings and get your name out there and take advantage while you have the opportunity.

  7. Krista: Shooting in AV mode at 2.8 is a good place to start. That allows as much light as possible to get in. One thing that may be causing you trouble is the bright sighs on the other side of the court. Do shots you've taken that don't include those signs look any better?

Regarding noise - there are programs that will help take that out of photos so if you have to use a higher ISO do it and then deal with the noise. I downloaded your photo and tweaked it just a bit to brighten it up. It could probably use some more work but I'm heading out the door to shoot a football game.<div>00N4mX-39327484.JPG.da557cf0e163dedc3d2e1041fe8cff0e.JPG</div>

  8. Jennifer: You've gotten a ton of great advice so I'll just add this - do what it takes to make this customer happy. Since you're starting out you can't afford to have a bad recommendation.

Peter: Unless you really like using DPP to go through your images I have found it is much faster to use ZoomBorwser or ImageBrowser to go through and delete the bad shots.

  9. David: I checked in the sports forum (click Forums above and then look about 1/2 way down the page) and the general recommendation is any fast prime between 50 and 135 with the 85mm 1.8 seemingly having the most recommendations. I have the Canon 50mm and 100mm lenses that I'm going to try using. If the 50 is to short and the 100 too long I'll just have to get one of those 85mm lenses.
  10. "When you noticed very little difference, is that with NR ON or OFF?"

Off. I have NR turned off and it will stay that way. I'll deal with noise as part of my post processing workflow.

    Just to clarify things:

With NR ON - RAW burst buffer = 6

With NR OFF - RAW burst buffer = 16/17

Bob makes a good point about the number being an estimate.

  11. Hi Bob,

I tried it from work this morning on my IE6 browser and it does display the ads properly. I then tried it on an IE7 browser and got the same results as last night at home so the issue seems to be with IE7. FWIW I was using IE7 on Windows Vista at home and Windows XP Pro here at work.

  12. Ellen/Josh: I found one of the sites and the images on it are being hosted by ImageShack and not Photo.net. Here's the properties for one of the images (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4717/43wc9.jpg)

Ellen: If you go to www.imageshack.us there is a link at the bottom of the page labeled "Report Abuse or Request Deletion". You can use that link to send an email requesting the photos be removed.

If you need any help trying to get your images removed contact me directly and I'll help you out.
