I think you will get better HDR results with images exposed using AEB than you would tweaking the same image multiple times and then merging it.

I wanted to post a quick note of thanks to everyone for replying. I have been away from PN for a while and you all have offered me some great advice.
-
Regarding the 1.4 vs 1.4 -- what's your primary use for the lens? I started out with the 1.8 but then upgraded to the 1.4 for the USM focus. I was having difficulty with the 1.8 shooting sports and the 1.4 works much better for me.

Note to Admin: This is NOT an offer to sell here on the forum.
Due to the recent passing of my father I have inherited several of his old
cameras. I have looked through them and have made a list of what I have so far.
I would appreciate it if those of you that are familar with old cameras would
give me some idea if I have anything that's worth keeping or should I auction
this stuff off on EBay. To the best of my knowledge this is stuff he collected
over the years and not stuff he actually shot with so there's no sentimental
value to me. FWIW I have already contacted KEH in Atlanta and they aren't
interested due to the low demand for these cameras and even suggested photo.net
as a site to check out :).
Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide. If the same camera is
listed more than once it means I have more than one of them.

I tried using a 70-200 f/4 in the high school gym I shoot in most of the time and it was too slow. A fast prime such as the 50mm 1.4 is what works best for me.
-
I used a rental version of that lens and Canon 1.4x extended and it worked just fine. You do lose a stop so you max aperture is 5.6 instead of 4.0.
-
Those photos look photoshopped to me.

I shoot basketball with a 40D and use the 50mm 1.4 prime lens. I recently bought the 85mm 1.8 and plan on using that at the next game to see how it works. I typically shoot in AV mode and use 1.4 - 2.0 depending on how good the lights are in the gym. I also shoot from one side of the court as well. What I do is when our players are on defense when they're on my side of the court I concentrate on getting good defensive shots. In the 2nd half I concentrate on offensive shots. So far this technique has worked well for me.
-
I use ZoomBrowser to quickly go through images to delete the ones I don't want to keep. It's much faster for doing that sort of thing than DPP is.
-
I would suggest you offer to do the shooting for your friend, assuming you have any interest in that type of photography. Let him concentrate on running the business and you help me by doing the photography.

I'm currently setting up a site on Exposure Manager. So far so good for me.

I have been using Paint Shop Pro X2 for a while now and like it quite a bit. I have two complains about it though:
1 - It doesn't yet support Canon 40D RAW or sRAW format. I'm sure they'll add that capability one of these days.
2 - It only seems to be able to load about 50 large JPG files at once before it starts throwing error messages. Once this happens you have to close out a few of the files you have open before you can perform function such as cropping, etc.
Since I bought X2 I have used it way more than I have LightRoom.

I have a 28-135 since it came with my 40D and I have tried to use and like the lens but I just can't seem to like it for some reason. I find the 18-55 IS lens spends the most time on my camera when I'm not using one of my prime lenses at a sporting event.
-
I typically convert and save using the following settings:
Image Quality: 10
Output Resolution: 72
(Check Resize option)
Width = 900
Height = 600
This usually gives me about a 500KB file. If you change Image Quality to 5 and use the same settings it knocks the file size down to around 50KB.
Try different settings and see how the results look. Afterall if you don't like the result you can always delete the image and try again.

I upgraded not too long ago from a Rebel XT to a 40D because I shoot sports primarily and the 6.5 FPS helps me to get shots I know I was missing with my Rebel XT. What "problems" are you having with the current camera that you hope to solve with a 40D? If you can answer that question then upgrade, otherwise upgrade lenses.
Regarding the Jan 24 announcements I'm betting Canon will announce upgrades to 5D and Rebel XT series.

Could you please post the link for the English version.

Larry: I've been using a 100mm f/2 for wresting and it works pretty well as long as I crank up the ISO on my 40D. I picked up a used 85mm 1.8 last week and will try that at the next match I shoot. Regarding noise, I crank up the ISO and the clean up the noise as best I can during post processing. I have been using Noiseware with good success.
-
Quick solution: Don't let the camera sit for weeks without using it :)
-
You guys have the worst luck with upgrades :(. Hopefully Santa will bring you guys some equipment that doesn't fail on a regular basis.
-
Helen: Non-zoom lenses are called primes. Since you're shooting with a 5D I would recommend the 85mm f/1.8 lens or possibly the 135mm f/2 as lenses to consider. Go with the fastest lens you can (lowest f number) which may allow you to shoot with a lower ISO than 1600.
When I shoot basketball I use a 50mm 1.4 lens on my 40D

Stop by the local thrift shop/good will/salvation army for used bed sheets or curtains. You'd be surprised what you can find for next to nothing at those places.
-
Alan: I meant to post a thank you note several days ago but I forgot. You've given me a lot of things to think about and I have contacted a local CPA and will be meeting with him soon to iron things out.
-
I keep mine as well. I have a large tupperware container that I put them in. That's the only way I could keep track of them.
-
No, it doesn't make the viewfinder darker. It's the same as the one that comes from the factory with the exception of the grid lines. I love mine though I still take some crooked photos I'm certain I'm taking less now that I've installed it.
Pondering a Sports Photography Business
in Business of Photography

Hi Paula,
Well I actually did a whole bunch of nothing. I found out that my primary job responsibilities were drying up there in Warner Robins so I made arrangements to transfer to Charleston, SC. Since I didn't have an inside connection with any of the schools here I've pretty much ditched the side business. Instead I'm branching out into other areas (landscapes mostly) and just having fun with my photography. I may contact the local folks around here to see if anyone needs any support for the upcoming school season.
Best of luck if you do get into the business.
