I believe the composition is good but the highlights in the background are distracting my attention.

This IMO is a textbook application for a gradual neutral filter. In an attempt to see how it would've looked I increased the contrast in PS for the lower part of the shot. I belive it looks much better.
I also love bright colors and I find myself forgetting about composition and just trying to get the colors in the frame. Most of the time I'm dissaponted when I look at the slide.
If I were you, I'd sent the film for a drum scan, reduce the contrast in PS and print it digitally.

Isn't ironic that while the picture was taken with an 8x10 you chose to post this thumbnail size file? On my 19" monitor the image is 2.5 x 1.5".

Personally I have a hard time judging a photo this small. My monitor is set to 1280x1024 and your pic is like a thumbnail. I would recommend the large size = 640.

I like it too.

I find the shadows at the bottom very distracting. I also agree with Kevin.

The object/sculpture is definitely interesting. The picture looks like a snapshot.

I find it too busy. Too many things competing for my attention.

The composition is too busy for my taste. I usually try to get only one flower as a subject. Keep shooting.

The sky is featureless, no pont of interest, symetrical composition, picture is/looks soft. I would go back there at sunrise/sunset when there are some clouds in the ski and when is very cold (well, that might not be possible in CA :-) to reduce the haze, get something in the foreground, use a tripod.
We went into a dusty antique store to wait out the rain. In a corner there was the puppet. While the image is technically imperfect (not all that sharp) I'm rather fond of it.
