P.S.--- I did buy another sigma too. the 105 2.8 macro. i won't have much time to use it til the weekend, but i've read that it is good for a sigma
-
I returned the sigma 24-70 and got the canon 24-70. I didn't want to spend the extra money, but I can say that after taking 20 shots with it, it definitely appears to be worth it. I briefly thought about the tamron but I still use my eos 3 quite a bit so I didn't want to by a digital only lens. I appreciate your input. Maybe the sigma I got my hands on was just a bad copy, but its hard to spend that money if the pics look like i just drank a couple pots of coffee.

Sheldon- thats the another part of the problem. The focus point was set on her right eye which is why her face is on the top center of the frame. I checked the focus point in the zoombrowser program and it verified for me that it was on her eye. I read that this lens also has a problem with front and rear focusing. Maybe that's what this is?

Thanks for your responses. I had the camera on a sturdy tripod and took 3 shots at each aperture from f2.8 through f11 and the ones posted here are the sharpest. I've taken approxiamtely 200 shots testing this lens and about 75-100 of them are marginally acceptable. I used the lens hood with no filter so I think it's in the lens I am going now to return this lens to the dealer and see what they can do for me. Thanks again- Jason

sorry about that- this should be a better example

I recently purchased a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. About half the shots are blurry and
the sharpest ones still aren't that sharp. Did I get a bad copy or am I
expecting too much from this lens? I did sharpen these in photoshop at 150%
and .5 pixels and this is the best I could come up with
BTW these are just quick shots in the back yard of my daughter so don't worry
about the aesthetics and lighting. Thanks for any help!<div></div>

I live in a townhouse with a lake out back. For several months I had customers come over and would take pictures by the lake and in the woods. I was given a ticket and fine for allowing customers to come to my residence. I had to get a business license stating that I was only allowed to do computer work in the home and that customers were not allowed on my premises. Now I have to meet them at coffee shops and Burger King. I had a sign on my suv and i was told that i had to get a permit for that also. it is frustrating having to jump through all these hoops just to do something fun that isn't hurting anyone.

I have 6 high schools within 20 miles of my home. I placed a half page ad in each of their respective school newspapers for a total of $250 and I now have 60 senior picture jobs lined up between now and the middle of April. If the students don't read the papers, the parents usually do and they are the one paying for the pictures.

Thank you both for your input. I went with the Novatron 600 w/s 3 light kit. I received it on the 13th and after a couple days of pracitce I am on the same level as the top pros. Just kidding, but it is simple to use and easy to get used to; however, there are so many lighting techniques to learn that it will be a long time before i am competition for anybody. I just felt more comfortable buying the novatron's, but from what i've researched, the AB's are very good so i don't think there is a wrong way to go, but what do I know?

I've done outdoor portraits for a few years now, off and on, but i recently
purchased a novatron 3 light kit. I have several friends who are pastors and 3
of them have asked me to do portraits for each family in their churches for a
church phone directory. I will set up my own backdrops and will offer a simple
package for each family if they want the pictures. My question is this: I will
only have a couple of minutes at most with each family, so should i use 2
umbrellas and keep the lighting the same throughout the entire day or would it
be ok to use softboxes and make adjustments for each family?

Alien Skin has a 30 day free trial. Then you can decide if it's worth the $200, or whatever it was

I now shoot b&w with film only, but some digital images of mine need to be converted to b&w. I use alien skin Exposure. They give you several choices of film silmulation and you can make small adjustments. www.alienskin.com

I recently purchased a sigma 24-70 f/2.8, but didn't purchase a u/v filter.
The filter size is 82mm and my only local camera shop just carries promaster
filters in this size. Would this be an acceptable filter or should I fork out
the bigger bucks and buy a more quality brand such as Hoya or Tiffen from
somwhere like B and H?

Kate- I started shooting a few years ago for friends and different events in my area. I just started doing this full time with a rebel xt, novatron studio strobes, sigma 24-70 f/2.8, 50/1.8, and a 135/2.8. I shoot the black and whites with a canon eos3. Aside from the strobes I bought some good reflectors to control the sunlight when doing outdoor senior pictures. I could get a higher dollar camera, but why when I am meeting and exceeding my customers expectations? Good skills and word of mouth will take you further than any equipment. Good luck

I began photography in the digital age, but recently purchased a used Canon
EOS3 to shoot b&w portrats in the studio and on location. I have been using
Ilford Delta 100 in studio and Delta 400 outdoors. I love the look I get from
each film, but was curious as to whether or not there is a better portrait
film. Thanks

I've bought from B and H several times, the last being last week. I purchased a complete basic studio setup and it was delivered in 4 days of my placing the order over the phone. They even pointed me in the right direction when I tried to purchase something I didn't need, saving me $300. I'm going to NYC in June on vacation and i'm going to stop in the store just to see it all in person

I am wanting to purchase a studio lighting system to give me more options for
portraits when the weather is bad. I've narrowed it down to 2 choices- Novatron
v600D 3-light kit and an Alien Bees kit with all the accessories I will need.I
know the Novatron has more power, but would the Alien Bees be powerful enough
for families and small groups? Please help!

I am considering purchasing a used EOS 3 to use for studio work. Would I be
better served with this or the 30D? I plan to scan the film for use in CS2. I
am more comfortable with the dynamic range in 35mm but also want the highest
quality. I currently have a rebel xt but will step up if it will serve me
better. Any opinions will be appreciated!

This morning I had a customer ask me to shoot some model figures he had created
so that the pictures can be placed in a hobby magazine that covered a contest
he had won. I happened to have just purchased a 105mm macro lens but I'm not
sure how to properly light it. I have 2- 580EX flashes and a 3 light novatron
studio kit that I'm still getting used to. I don't have a ring flash and won't
be able to get one for a while, if I ever do decide to get one. The figures are
between 4 to 8 inches in height and are already placed in different scenes on
the display so I won't be able to move them. Can you please help me with how to
light this?
