First, I live in Quebec city, province of Quebec, Canada. I'm from an industrial/fishermen town about 800 km norht east of Quebec city. I'm used to big winter, cold and I lived by the sea for 20 years. My current job is for the Canadian Coast Guard (as a technician) so fog I know too.
My RV (1998) is a very small, one bit bigger than a Westfalia VW. I dont mind using public transportation, most of the time it is cheaper, you dont get lost and it is good for the planet.
My plan is to leave Quebec mid-july 2009 to be in north BC like Prince Rupert early august. Then I plan to travel south by the coast in BC. But I could go inland without a problem. My goal is to find very nice spots where I could spend a week or more hiking and photographying. Using a ferry is no problem to me.
I would like to spend september in Washington and Oregon. October in California and Utah.
But, I really dont like schedule so I'll go with the weather and mechanics problems (if you dont like mechanics dont buy an RV or get rich before buying one), that's a better way to manage that kind of trip IMHO.
After that, I have no plans but I think my wife will want me to be back home...for the hunting season hahaha!Joking. She'll probably travel with me this time. Thanks again to all of you.

Thank you Steve, this the the kind of information I was looking for. Merry Christmas to you and familly. Pierre

So to continue with y first question : I would like to have your opinion on where to go and when for landscape and animals photography.

-

Well, my idea is to stay for minimum of a week in every spot or more depending on the potential. I take a 9 months vacations from work so I can travel from mid-july to december without problems. I prefer doing less spots and stay a longer time, especially for animals to be able to get used to the place and finding the proper spot with appropriate weather.

I'll be in BC end of July until mid-August and then going south as the weather gets colder. So probably California in September and Arizona, Utah, Colorado in October. I aslo can arrange my trip to be somewhere at a precise date if it happens to be worth it. thanks

hi guys and girls of course,
I'm at planning my next road trip for 2009 that will be a 3 months tour of the Pacific coast region of Canada an US. I
would like to have your opinion on where to go and when for landscape and animals photography. I travel with a small
motorhome and I can easely work my myself out on any trail or so by myself. I'm from the east side of Canada, I'll
cross Canada first and then travel the west coast and then come back home by crossing Arizona, Utah Colorado,
Wyoming....Merry Christmas to all photo.net members.

I just bought a R1 kit that I want to use with my D700 and my SB-800. Can someone explain me how to use it with my on board flash and the SB-800? R1 booklet is not quite clear on how to make this work. Thanks for all the answers to come and a merry Christmas to all photo.net members and familly.
I need to scan large quantities of BW negatives FP4+ and HP5+ and color slides
from Velvia and Provia film.
What kind of scanner and software should I buy? The Coolscan 5000 ED from
Nikon seems interresting with the FH-3 and SF-210 features but Nikon scanners
are the only ones I know? Any advices are welcomed. thanks.

Barry, thanks a lot. This gave a way to go. Dont be sorry, I'm always happy when others are kind enough to share their knowledge.

I shoot digital and film. I do have a meter and want to learn using it. So if the key light is f8 alone for example how do I adjust the others light (approximetly)? I imagine I need less light on the others one so should I think go for the fill at 1 stop under (f5.6) and hair and adjust background depending on its color. Now, let say I have a key at f8, fill and air at f5.6 and background at f11, how do I add all these readings for one settings on my camera. thanks
-
Lets place this studio situation and tell me if I do things right. One
softbox (A) above camera aiming directly at the face of subject, one softbox
on the left of subject (B), one softbox © above subject above head as
hairlight, one strobe (D) as backlight to lit background.
First : I read light A with light meter aiming at camera (should I read just
this light or sould I fire all the strobes to make that reading?)
Second : I read light B with light meter aiming at the light from subject
position
Third : I read light C with light meter aiming at the light from subject
position
Fourth : I read light D with light meter aiming at the backgrond from subject
position
Now, how do I calculate total exposure with this 4 readings in hands? Also,
wich light is the key, the fill, etc.
thanks
-
More precisely what I'm looking for is how to meter light effectively with my light meter, how to add others light to my principal source of light in term a quantity of light, how to calculate ratio, etc.? Also, some information that could precise what is a key light, a fill light, etc.? thanks
-
hi!
I did read a few books on studio photography but it seems I haven't choose the
right ones because I still fight at reading light properly with many strobe on
the set or having a comprehensive workflow in the studio to achieve what I
want as final images. I already have "Light: science and magic" Please
suggest books on the subject.
thanks

thanks, I apreciate your help.

Thanks to people who want to help others! To me any, question is good (that's the only way to learn) but sometimes it is the answer that makes all the trouble Mr. Shearman. And also, if you think "Why do people keep asking how to set white balance in the studio?..." just dont answer!
-
Could you suggest me a procedure to adjust my WB at the beginning of a
shooting? Also, what king of material do I need to do it? thanks
-
What is the best time saving method in workflow for adjusting white balance?
Doing it at the beginning of the shooting or applying it as a batch process on
my images after the shooting? thanks

I would like to know what model of CIS and where to buy for my Canon Pixma
IP4200 and what is the best ink I can get? thanks
-
I did consult the bogen web site but it is very diificult to figure it out wich parts I need to fullfill my need. There is no images showing kits at work wich would help choosing parts. thanks

It seems that the superclamp is locked at 90 degrees angle so I can't move the boom arm up and down with it. Correct me if I'm wrong. thanks
-
A total lenght between 50" and 80" of boom is ok for me. Is the super clamp swivel? thanks.
-
I have some autopoles in my studio because I try to save space. I'm now in
need to use some booms to light my subject from higher level and I would like
to know how to fix a boom to an autopole. Please suggest if possible boom arm
and related parts to secure it to an autopole. Thanks in advance for the
suggestion you will giving me and sorry for my english but I'm a french
speaking person so....
