1.
I use Photoshop Elements 5.

It's an older version, and I bought it cheap, off someone who was uograding to the full version...

For my uses, it's more powerful than I need, and yet very easy to use, perhaps I've not yet tried all of it's features, certainly, I've not mastered them all!

It take a little trial and error - you can have lots of fun whilst doing this - it's not a chore!

My advice would be to try to get AT LEAST Photoshop Elements, it's the main bits of PS, without the 'overload'!
Regharding a calibration device, it's not worth the cost at this stage, you can checkout some online stuff which will give a relatively standard set of parameters to calibrate your monitor.

Others will no doubt disagree - checkout my images to see what I've done - I'm not saying that I'm a 'guru' but see what you think!

  2.
JR, If possible I would buy new, and as for the Canon/Nikon query, it won't matter to you, they're both more than adequate for your needs, (mine too truth be known!).
With regards to 'making a sytem' work for you, the craft of image recording will take a while to learn, and any modern DSLR will be suficient to allow the skills to be practised.
More importantly, exposure, composition, lighting, subject, and focal length, to name a few are what great picture making is all about, and there's more than enough there to tackle......much more than all these though, is that it should be a great, and fun. learning experience....

00Uous-182783584.jpg.4d4798941bf5876feb3bfa0b700cd25f.jpg

  3. I just used the Shadows/Hihglight tad in PSE5, and reduced the highlights by 25%, and midtine contrast by about 40%.

Then masked the backgroun and blurred slightly, and then inverted my mask, and sharpened by 200% at 0.2, then added a border around my crop.

These are with your Jpg, and so it's worse than working from the original - it's always worth trial and error with PS elements...

    best regards,

  4. Hi Susana,

The two things you mention are both available here at PN, and in spades! I think you could also choose some people here at PN who are prolific posters, observe their work, and build your skills that way.

It's a wonderful place to post your pictures, ask for critique, and look for inspiration all at the same time!

    Best regards,

Shaun - feel free to email!

  5. Pardon me for adding my, unskilled, photgraphically uneducated, and brazenly oppinionated comments here, as - I'm a complete amateur....

I add critique to pictures which inspire me; which entertain, and thrill; which allow me to see something I'd not noticed before, and which have a beauty I can understand.

..or, those which I can see have some problems, ones which I would have re-engineered!

Generally, I offer comment because I want to help....

Is it really this simple, or is THAT just me..?

  6. A cool site, really clean with the white pages; and clear & minimalist works for me!

Two very slight things trouble me.....it may be because I'm obsessive/compulsive..! But I found the transition between colour/mono a bit of a concern, and I'd really love a more progressive journey through the images...could you perhaps have an organised progression...EG. Silhouettes then shadow, then 1/2 body, then subjects whom are looking at the camera, then walkers..etc....?

Sorry if this sounds negative, it's not meant as a critique of badness, more an opinion..!

    All the best,

    Shaun

  7. I think this is a good idea...some critique would be good too. I'd love much more constructive comment on my

images, where I could improve, and what works. I enjoy adding some comments to those images which I feel have

alternative/additional potential, but it'd be much more educational to get a more 'qualified' opinion.

My concern is that it would use an inordinate amount of time!
