sorry, I disagree with your last comment. Anti terrorism laws and measures are continually being increased with little reaction from the public. The recent bikie legislation was a good example - it was dressed up to look like it is targeting 'biker groups' when in fact it allows the police to use the same legislation to target any 'group' or individual they feel they legislation applies to ie: protest groups (peaceful or otherwise). The NSW Law Commission was quite scathing in its response to this legislation yet there was barely a wimper from the public as it was dressed up by the media as targetting only biker groups....

its a great policy in theory - now go out on the streets and actually shooting people and see how long it takes for people to call the police.... I spent several years doing street photography in sydney but gave it up after being held and questioned several times by police because someone assumed I was either a terrorist or paedophile. People in sydney are extremely aggressive towards photographers and many professionals have spent time with police 'explaining' their actions. In addition, the pathetic furore that surrounded the Bill Henson photos last year would have done nothing in the minds of the public to enhance the image of photographers. By all means, go out and start shooting but be aware that the policy is different to the actual reality. I would advise you look at www.photorights.4020.net before setting out so that you can advise the police (and anyone else) of your rights when (if) the time comes

Can anybody recommend a point and shoot digital camera that doesnt have shutter lag? Specifically, something that could be used for street photography? I know the Ricoh GR and Canon G9 and 10 are popular but I was suprised by their shutter lags when I tried them in a store. I currently use a Leica M7 but was toying with the idea of a lighter alternative for something different. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking to buy a 1960's Summacron 35mm lens and have found one at a reasonable price. The only problem is that it has alot of 'cleaning spots' (dealers description) on the glass. Is this something I should be worried about? Will the quality of the image be affected? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I am just wondering if I really need an external viewfinder for a 21mm voigtlander color skopar lens on a 0.72 Leica M7 body. Can I get away with 'guesstimating' what will be in frame or is this not really possible?. I am thinking of buying a used 21mm lens that is very cheap but in great condition. Thank you

FM3a vs F6
in Nikon

I also highly recommend the F100 and FM3A combination..... you should be able to pick up a very good F100 second hand (even two!) and have a great kit with the lenses you already have. The F6 with a fast 2.8 lenses is going to be very heavy and while the F6 is a great camera, the F100 has all the functions you will ever need. You can then spend the money you saved on film...
-

When you study spoken Japanese, one of the first things you learn is the Japanese pronounciation of the vowels a,e,i,o and u. In Japanese, the 'i' of Nikon is pronounced with an 'ee' sound so the linguistically correct pronounciation is Neekon.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and I realise that the final decision as to which lens to buy (if any) is mine. The advice you have provided has given me a range of options to consider.

I am looking to buy another lens for my Leica M7 but am not sure which is the better choice. Currently I have Leica 35 and 50mm lenses plus a 90mm Voigtlander. I have read that there isnt much difference between the 35mm and 28mm coverage and that the 25mm would be better (I feel the 21mm is getting a little too much into distortion for the kind of street work I do). Can anybody give me some advice? Thank you.

Currently I use UV filters on my M lenses out of both (bad?) habit and in the belief that they 'protect' the lens. I shoot
mainly b&w street work and was wondering if my images 'lose' anything as a result of using these filters. Apologies if
this question has been asked before.

I am considering buying a dedicated film scanner and was wondering if anyone could offer advice. Most of my work
is done with 400 or 1600 speed BW film and I would prefer a scanner that worked well for this speed of film. The
Nikon Coolscans seem to produce excellent results for color (which I rarely do) but I was wondering if anyone had
any experience/advice re the faster speed B&W films.
Thank you

I am looking at getting a 28mm lens for my Leica but cannot afford a Leica. Just wondering what peoples opinions
might be regarding the Zeiss Biogon T ZM 2.8 lens vs the Voigtlander Skopar 3.5 lens (apart from the speed
differential). Also, I know the Voigtlander needs an adapter to fit the Leica M body, but does the same apply to the
Zeiss lens? Thank you.

not sure why you would want to 'club' someone with a lens.....

I currently live in Japan doing alot of street photography in my free time. Just wondering if anyone knows the law or
can point me in the right direction regarding this matter. I have'nt been harrassed here (unlike Australia) but just
wanted to know where I stand should a situation arise. Thank you.

I use my M7 almost everyday. Currently I live in Japan and it is still quite easy (and cheap) to buy, process and scan black and white film.

Christoph mentions above that he uses a light blue filter for street/documentary photography. I was just wondering what 'effect' this would produce as I have never heard this before. Thanks

I heard that some people use light blue filters for black and white street/documentary photography. I have never
heard this before and was wondering what effect this would produce? Thanks

Over the last couple of weeks the eye piece that I look through seems to have become 'clouded' for want of a better
description. I have tried cleaning it with a cloth etc (but no fluids) with little effect. I am just wondering if anyone else
has experienced this kind of thing and how it can be remedied.... thank you

not promoting anything but people may find the book 'The World is Flat' by the Pulitzer Prize writer Thomas L Friedman to be of interest. It covers alot of the topics that have been put back and forth on this thread about China, Japan, India etc and where things are going in the future...first published in 2005 and still very relevant...

Christian...some nice photos here as well as on your website.
Stuart, I know the man in the photo you posted above. I often visit his shop to pick up bits and pieces for my Leica

For the last year or so I have been living in the northern Japanese city of
Sapporo. Whenever I have had free time I have tried to capture some idea of
the city and people with my camera. Sapporo is a rather modern 'western' style
city with a rather short history hence most of my photos are not 'traditional'
Japan per sae. I have been using M6 and M7 bodies with 35 and 50mm F2 Leica
lenses and Fuji Neopan 400 and 1600 film which is scanned and uploaded. I
would be interested to get members feedback on my images which can be seen on
www.flickr.com/photos/grammefriday
(my apologies if this doesnt come up as a hotlink)...
