hi all, thanks a bunch for the replies so far... unfortunately sending it to someone in the US could be difficult as im based in Ireland

hi all,
received an old Nikon F2 from my grandfather years ago and have only gotten around to messing with it now. The problem is that the light meter is sporadically working. I have put fresh batteries in it a few times and each time the meter works for a short period of time and then stops. When i take the batteries out, one of them on both occasions has been a little raised than the other one... in that it has gotten more 'bulbous' is the only way i can describe it. Is there anyone out there who would have any advice on what the issue could be?
Thanks

okay, despite being a wonderful forum for advice , tips and opinion I can't understand why some feel fit to comment about my status as a university lecturer and secondly regarding my grammar. Should I try and justify anything to either of you, I think not. Please refrain from passing judgement in such a patronising way as I dont feel the comments are in any way constructive...
As for the rest of the responses, THANK YOU, having not shot with digital for all that long I feel that it was an honest enquiry. I would like sugestions regarding a more durable alternative to the 550d if people feel that it could be a little less durable than other models.
thanks in advance

hi all,
im lecturering in a university and have been asked to make the switch, slowly, to digital photography from film. we have been teaching a photography module for years but the feedback from the students has been an additional elective in Digital photograhy aswell as the solely film based one they currently undertake. Mu question is what camera should I get in ? I would like to stick with canon just through personal choice, but we will be llooking at getting in a couple of cameras that will get ALOT of use by students who may not be delicate with them. are their any opinions on the best option for such an amount of use? we would be talking around 100 student per semester... also do any of the canon DSLR cameras have an option of fully manual or a way of checking if the photograph was taken using the maual mode rather than the students going off and shooting in auto mode... currenty I am considering the 550d
anyway, sorry if it comes across as many questyions but any advice would be welcomed.
Thank you

The flash can already be set up as a slave, but im looking at setting the onboard camera built into my 30d to act as a trigger so that both flashes will simultaniously trigeer? or is this not possible, and i can only use the built in flash on the 30d as a flash on its own?
thanks

Hi all,
i have a eos 30d and have recently been given a Nissin Di622 flash. The flash has the capability of acting as a slave but i dont know how to 'programe' my camera to use it's onboard flash as a master and simultaniously trigger the flash unit (which i want on a tripod to the left of the subject) as a slave?
is this possible without having to get any other triggers or conectors? and if so it would be great if anyone could tell me how to get it working.
Thanks

Hi guys,
ive been shooting on film for over 11 years now and recently (2 years ago) embraced digital, from a self taught point of view. Ive been using photoshop since then but would really like to get to know it alot better and get into digital image 'manipulation' as a possible career. Im stuck on where to get the education needed online or in books. has anyone any advice on courses or books that are apt for someone who is not an expert or by no means a beginer at photoshop? or any other advice on how to focus on my goal of becoming a skilled photoshop user.
Regards

excellent point Ian

Chris, that is a very valid point and one that i would share wholeheartedly... it is a sad time that we live in when the paranoid has become the norm and there is an immediate association with the worst possible case scenario... photographers like Jimmy Forsyth would be looked at suspiciously in todays society and as a result we are looking at a time when images capturing the everyday street life of children are proving more and more difficult and 'uncomfortable' to capture...
RIP

-

jeff, the wonderful innocent photos i speak of are with regard to the context of this particular discussion... namely a time unlike today when there was no 'presumed perversion' associated with a man that took photographs of children doing what children do... playing, being mischievous or even just hanging around the streets... as evidenced through some of the photos captured by the likes of Cartier Bresson, Bruce Davidson and even Fergus Bourke. These photographers were and still are wonderful photographers that shot images that i raise the question may not be possible to capture in the future due to the current climate within society around the subject of shooting images of children...

-

another issue that has cropped up within my research is the question as to whether we would have such wonderful photos of random children in the street as we have been graced with by the likes of Cartier Bresson in the future? will there be similar photos documenting every day children from this generation or will a consequence of the growing extreme nature of society be an absence of such wonderful innocent photos? it is an issue that could have serious consequences in retrospect.

-

Glenn, thats a much wider issue and no doubt one that is open to serious debate. ..
Yet returning to the point about the printing of photos at home, that is what i have always done, yet there is a certain generation of people who still use film cameras and still send their film in to be processed at the local photolab... these people often tend to be of an older generation who take, as was previously stated, 3 or 4 rolls a year and usually at celebratory times. Quite often of their family and grand children. It is disgusting that these type of innocent images that i have previously mentioned are the cause of loving grandparents/parents being '"suspected" by society of being something alot more sinister.

-

thanks for the comments so far guys, although some of you are getting somewhat sidetracked... but that may be the result of such a taboo topic.
My main concern and the reasoning behind the research is the growing situation of people being labeled/branded/associated with a certain mind set because they have taken photos of their own children/grand children at bath time, in swimming togs, semi naked running around the back garden or even fully naked... i have been photographed in all of these embarrassing situations, but they were only embarrassing when my mother would show aunties, uncles or even worse potential girlfriend these snaps from the family album. I feel that these photos traditionally have been entirely innocent and still are in the minds of any right thinking member of society... and it is extremely worrying that certain pharmacies and photo labs refuse to print such photos anymore and even worse notify authorities when they encounter these type of images.

hi guys,
im in the process of writting a paper on the potential end of photographing children in society.
This is fueled by the numerous stories being documented about people being confronted for taking photos of children (sometimes even their own) in public places. This also is complimented by the banning of photography at school plays, at public swimming pools and even as extreme as the situation that i have recently read about where there was a banning of photos being taken of 'new born' children in cots in a maternity ward? This is all married with the alleged instructions by the FBI in the states to all photo labs and pharmacies that print photographs to report any photos of a 'suspicious' nature containing images of children.
What i am looking for is peoples opinions on what society has become and do you agree that there will come a time in the not to distant future that there will be a generation that will never know the embarrassment of their parents pulling out old photos of them naked or partly clothed as a child that most people of my generation have already experienced...

thanks

Hi guys,

Cheers guys, We have CS2 and will be working off that. Regarding other lenses etc... we dont
have any, so we are starting out fresh.... we always used fully manual film cameras with 50m
lens. Any suggestions on which canon would be the best? Thanks again

Hi guys,
im a photography lecturer who has been teaching students traditional B/W
photography from processing film through to printing in the darkroom. The
school has allowed me to purchase a DSLR for the dept but i am unsure as to
what one to get. We have an account with Cannon and the camera will be used
for various shooting. I also would like a camera that i can shoot images that
will directly be transfered to a laptop if this is possible?
Anyway any recomendations would be great. My budget is approx $1500-$2000,
thanks a million

thanks for the replys so far folkes. i have 60+ students who are all using ilford hp5 400 iso and using small hand held tanks. Ive searched and i cant seem to find any recomended dev times for such film using TMAX at the 1:9 ratio...
-
hi all im looking to extend the life of my tmax developer. i have been using the
recomended 1x4 dilution but have read that it is possible to mix it at 1x7 and
even 1x9 ratios. Is this true and if so could someone please explain the
development process re: time and temp for these ratios. i use ilford hp5 400iso,
also if it could be clarified if i can use this developer repeatedly as up to
know i have been using once (1x4 ratio) and disposing of it once used.
Thanks in advance

just reading the posts in this thread... im pretty much self taught when it comes to chemicals etc and always go by the labels instructions, but i would be very interested if someone could explain how you can mix Tmax at 9 X 1 dilution instead of a 1 X 4 dilution? This would save me a lot of money being spend on bottles of Tmax? Is it a case of changing the tempreture and do you get different results?
thanks a bunch
