A lot of helpful info here. As an example, I find I can go as low as 1/320 second to reasonably stop action. On the D300, ISO up to 3200. I try to have the f-stop f/2 or higher for improved DOF.

Basketball
in Sports
I have a blast taking photos at kids basketball games. The games are fun, and very challenging to photograph. I have only been in two Gyms that have had ok lighting, most are like caves. I use the 85 f/1.4, but keep a 50 f/1.8 in the bag. If I can't get into position that works for the 85mm I switch to the 50mm. I have yet to be in a gym where I could be any where under/behind the basket. It's gotta be an exciting place to get shots from, and I believe Kelly has it right about using the wider lens like a 30mm.<div></div>

I had the chance to photograph the Chapel Field vs Chester Varsity Basketball game. At the Hambletonian Classic in Chester New York. Chapel
Field won the Championship with a score of 72-44.<div>

What Lens Do You Have On Your D700 Right Now?

<p>At the moment I have my Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX mounted. Works great for Fast pitch softball.<br>
Most of the time I have the Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S D mounted, it's my general purpose lens.<br>
If I want to go light weight, I use the 50 f/1.8</p>
