Tim, well I liked it until I read your opinion of it.....just kiddin :)

Yea I know it's not aesthetically perfect. I just like look and feel of the picture. Sometimes "perfect" is cliche. I actually thought less detail in the blacks worked pretty well in this. I'm going to go smash my camera now. thanks

Actually I do appreciate your opinion and I wish more people would give their 2 cents on this site no matter how you feel about a picture.

    Thanks Andrea

I thought about lightening up the picture to show more detail in her hat and hair, but I decided against it. I like the really blackness of it, I also thought it framed her face and expression really well. I see what you are saying about whitening the eyes. I wonder if that wouldn't look weird or unnatural though?

I wish I had a less distracting background but you can't always control that.

    thanks again for your comments

  1. Nice shot. I like the harshness of the sun. I think it contributes to the harshness of the environment you were in. Kind of looks like a Mars landscape. I also agree that this shot is made to be in black and white. I don't think Color would work.

I'm curious to hear from b&w aficionados. I'm struggling to get good

b&w's using digital. I recently switched from film to digital. This

is probably my favorite b&w portrait I've done so far. I cranked up

the saturation before b&w conversion and I liked the results. Is

there anything that you typically do to a digital photo to get that

    classic b&w film look?

thanks for any advice, I'd appreciate your opinion and suggestions you

    might have.

Thanks Fred, actually I like your version very much. I actually saved a B&W version on my computer but I really liked the color of the silo and the old faded red barn wood, so I stuck with the color version.

I had been driving by this old barn once a week for the last year, I could see it in the distance. But I could not figure out how to get off the interstate and find the back country roads that would get me close. I would get lost every time I tried. Finally one day I got lucky.

Thanks Peter. I thought the same thing about the sky being a victim. The sun looked angry to me as well.

The funny thing is an angry security guard was 10 feet away from me yelling at me from his car while I took this picture. He said this was private property and I had no right to take pictures. I laughed and said to him, "you can see this plant from 50miles away." He said, "that might be so, but once you cross those rail road tracks it's private property." I turned, looked and said "I don't see any sign." He said "it's just assumed" I laughed and went on my way.

  2. Ok....if I'm taking this picture here are my thoughts:

I hate the background....I'd go with a very dark background or simple/classic black and white window scene....maybe on a bed?

The photo seems too flat to me. It's too two dimensional. I'd find a smaller focal point. Because the foreground and background is so light, I think I'd have her wearing a dark top. (either a tank top, a black bra, or nude) I'd also try focusing on the eye's rather then her arm or the mirror. Her face seems less in focus then the mirror, maybe that was your intention, but I think if the model is making eye contact that her eyes should be the focal point. If your intention was to have the mirror to be the focal point then I would not have her making eye contact with the camera. I like the mirror idea alot. I'd prefer to see her wearing thigh high stockings though.

Ok that's me being as critical as I can about this photo. I'm not saying I could do better but that's what I'm thinking. Nice job, I think you are on the right track with this pose, I'd just tweak a few things.

I like the picture alot....but if I had such an opportunity with that lighting, I would have done a nude. Don't take that suggestion the wrong way...I just think that photo with a nude model's silhouette would have been really cool. As is though, it's still good. So don't take my opinion as a negative, I'd be very proud of that shot.

    thanks

  3. The only negative thing I can come up with......It will suck to be you when she turns 16. lol Beautiful portrait, Beautiful girl....you should be proud.

suggestion..... frame this in a two photo frame. The other photo should be your daughter laughing.

    cheers
