For those questioning this as a "composition," my understanding is Jeff utilized strobes within bulb mode. In other words, the camera is in bulb mode and the strobes only fire when the bullet just contacts the matches.

 

The flame is unflinching because it only existed AFTER the bullet had already passed (and the remainder of the bulb exposure timed out then closed the shutter), thus it appears as a perfect untouched flame, well, because it was.

Funny. I dig this shot. More than your others. I feel that your entire portfolio eludes technical brilliance, but I side with you and do feel the high level of emotion and moodiness in this shot. Personally, of all your great photos, I'd put this particular one on my wall. Upon seeing your other work, the viewer just stops in his tracks and exclaims, "Whoa!" and then maybe moves on, but this is the kind of shot where you can sit down, lean back, stare at it, get lost in the wiew of the image, and stare at it some more. You're an inspiration. Thanks, Cian.

A really nice shot, and well executed - you know your tools. I admire your portfolio - it's simply dripping with color. It's also nice to see you're a purist. There's a time and place for Photoshop, and there's also a time to leave well enough alone. Don't get too hung up on the negative critique. I think you're stuff looks fabulous. Some people just dream in color - others don't. Keep up the good work.
