  1. If you can, just get it. Life's short, and even though you can follow your photo muse with a

camera that's an enth the price, an M6 is a cracking machine that will make you think about

how you're doing what you're doing. By its limitations, it will take your eye in different

directions. I agonised over (the price of) it, at first, but never

regretted it afterwards. Single biggest disadvantage- If you drop it, you're mailing it to re-

align the focus.Second single biggest disadvantage- you'll buy another lens.and then

another. and another. It won't improve your photography even a smidgeon( you do fine

without it), but it is nice to use.I'll bet you deserve it.

  2. Stephen, if the camera is malfunctioning in some way, then send it back to them, and explain

your frustrations. From my experience (4 repairs to Solms in the last year) their service

service is unequalled. They'll fix it 'til they get it right. It ain't done the next day, but it's done

correctly. That's what you pay the big money for. And the lenses. And the black paint. And

don't get me started on the photos..

  3. I'm still with Ray.Other than specific aspects of a specific lens for a specific intent, i don't see

    summicrons,summiluxes, "L"s, "FD"s,distagons,tri-elmars,variogons,biogons making ANY

difference to most of the photographs shown here. they are what they are because of

photographic intent (at all levels of ability), not because a of some "jewell-like" len's

"signature".I can't quite believe that someone who wants to make good photographs could

put a camera to their eye with the primary motivation of "can't wait to see the creamy

midtones at f2 with this baby....". Cos if you are, it's not gonna be very rewarding for you. Or

it is.I have no idea anymore. Jesus we SO need a photo competition round here. Travis? ;)

  4. From what I hear, you can get into trouble for giving away the names of CIA agents there,

scooter. I'm settling back into Dublin and a new life/sucky weather/computer/camera

system, but I do lurk, and hope to be back regularly soon. It HAS become very gear oriented

around here (which I think was Rays point) , but I enjoyed this thread. More non specific

discussions would be cool. Hope you're all well, you certainly haven't mellowed.

  5. I spent the last 18 months in Germany and had to send Leica two cameras to Solms for repair, a focus misaligned M6ttl(my fault, dropped it) and a shutterless M7(their fault, failed on the fifth roll). On both occasions within three days I received a confirmation-of-receipt letter which detailed the required repairs and the estimated cost(free, both times). I called them a couple of times, and their service rep was helpful, efficient, and well informed. In my experience they're still as classy and "old school" an outfit as you could hope to find.Comes from pride in their work, I imagine- not such an easy thing to find these days. And the stuff came back like new. Thanks for sharing, Tony.
