    Hi Sigfrid!

This is a marvellous photograph. In addition to your usual very high technical standards the composition is very powerful. It catches the atmosphere of a remarkable city.

  1. You have the makings of an excellent photograph here. The balance of light, colour and detail is very good indeed. You ask about cropping and toning... For me the small gap between the tree trunk on the left of the image and the edge of the frame is slightly uncomfortable - either remove it completely (which might be a shame) or... go back and take it differently next time (ha ha!). The toning - the patch of brightly lit ground (in the bottom LH corner) contains very little detail. If it were possible to bring some in through some detailed work in photoshop or similar this might improve things too.

    Best wishes from Scotland!

  2. Hi Rich!

This was shot on ISO 1600 1/2000 @ f10 on a grotty and slightly windy morning using my 70-300 on a focal length of 220 (in 35mm terms). I was trying to avoid the risk of camera shake and was also working in light that varied by the moment as the mist moved through.

Whilst I agree that NR software might benefit this photograph my feeling is that some of the glaur (Scottish word for sticky wet mud) feeling would be lost. Catching the feeling of the moment was the idea rather than technical accuracy. However, I'll take a look at NR software in due course and see what can be done.

I took about 3500 photographs over 48 hours at this festival. I managed to whittle this down to 693 after a week and I'm now working through each performance to edit the usable ones. Lessons are being learned!

Thanks for your visit and critique. I was lucky enough to see Amy's performance during the hardest two days of photography in my life. I was working in the Acoustic Village at the Wickerman Festival for the entire time it was open over the two days of the festival. The shifts were 12-18 hours...

During the day natural light coming through the tent skin made the work relatively OK - working at 1/200 and maybe f8 on ISO 800 or thereabouts. However, once it became darker the stage lighting was only enough for 1/50 @ max aperture on ISO 1600 (or higher on occasion) using spot metering and manual settings to make the best of it. And then, of course, the folk on stage don't stand still... One of the reasons I was asked to do this work is that I don't use flash :) Catching the atmosphere was the main thing with crisp images a rarity to be enjoyed.

I'm pleased to say Amy has asked to use some of the photos I took on her own websites so all's well that ends well!

Hi Dirk - a pleasure to receive your critique. I, too, was fascinated by Amy in her entire performance. Partly because backstage she was a bundle of nerves but onstage immensely powerful. I have never worked so hard taking photographs in my life! The lighting went from the OK to much darker and the folk on stage just wouldn't stand still...

    I'm going back next year!

  3. Firstly, thanks for taking a peek at my Wickerman work. I was there for two very long shifts just working in one location for the acoustic organisers of what is a wonderful festival. For an old man like me this was a remarkable experience!

I took just about 3500 photographs over my time there and have now whittled these down to 693 after a digital projector show with the organisers last Friday night here. Started talking and eating at 6.30pm and finished, well relaxed and after a huge slideshow, at 3.30am on Saturday :)

The priority is to edit and share the images with the performers - this is where my effort is going just now. Next up will be the people attending and enjoying the shows. Watch this space! However, whilst I have a 'real' job during the day my productive work on the photographic side is contained within the morning shift 5.30-7.30am and in the evenings. Bear with me!

    Best wishes

This is very, very good. Composition, detail and light to savour in so many ways.

Thank you for sharing such a fine image!

    Best wishes
