  1. Was this for negative retouching or print retouching, though with a light box I would be inclined to believe that it was for negative retouching. George Hurrell who was the premiere Hollywood lighting photographer did that to a lot of his negatives. Took all the blemishes away from his subjects using a pencil, pointed stick, to scratch the emulsion away and would paint in emulsion where needed as well. It's an amazing technique and mostly lost today.

Are you having a hard time focusing because you are missing a black cloth to put over you and the camera so you can see the ground glass or are you having a hard time focusing because you haven't opened the aperture all the way to allow max light onto the ground glass? And do you have a loupe for focusing? .... Sherle
