A couple of friends and I were one of many improvised teams that filled vehicles with relief supplies and headed north in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. This picture was taken on April 2 on the first of five trips we made that month. It shows a huge trawler that has been deposited by the surge in what was once the thriving port of Kesennuma. It was a remarkable event, far too great for me to describe. It also marked a shift in my photography away from street towards documentary.
This is a scan of a darkroom print. For those interested, I used a number of techniques, including scrunched oven-paper texture, bleach out and sepia toning. This photo featured in an ad hoc exhibition in Tokyo and Beijing.

  3.
Fi, Tokyo is OK. Up north is where the tragedy is. Everyone is doing what they can. A bloke in a pub last night gave me 10,000 yen when I told him I'm heading up there soon to deliver stuff. Some people!
Here's the work of two people I know who got up there days after the quake and tsunami.
4.
Philip, I agree that this may well have been Fenton's way of working, given, as you say, the limitations and his background as a painter. However, if it was "necessary" for him to stage this scene (if he actually did), we must ask--Necessary for what? Were these images taken for propaganda purposes? Does the end, in fact, justify the means, as Elmo suggests?

I first read the account of this some years ago, but still remember being struck with an image of his manservant struggling under the weight of each cannonball, while the pedantic Fenton busied himself with their positioning on the road.

It worked. Very dramatic photo. The end justifies the means in many cases.

This is war photography Elmo. Surely it shouldn't be staged? (Writing this as the 14-floor Tokyo building I'm in rocks back and forth for the second time this evening...)

  7.
Wonderful work Si! Really hard-hitting without ramming it in the face of the viewer. I'll certainly send this on to freinds and buy a copy myself.
A couple of observations:
A lot of it is shot in East Anglia and Yorkshire. Any reason for this?
The prostitute shots look like an individual project. Did you start a project and then, for whatever reason, have to stop?
I'm interested in the background to the prison shots.
Si Barber sounds like Sai Baba, the Indian guru. Purely coincidental?
