    Colleseum Nights

David--All I have to say is YOU ARE THE MAN! I love this shot...very, very nicely done. As you may have noticed, I've been very absent from this site for the last 6 months--I have been on orthopaedic trauma and it's just too busy to allow for anything else. I hope to be back on here more now and look forward to learning from your expertise again!

    Sunset Haze

I'm very thankful and humbled by the outstanding ratings and reviews this shot has received thus far! To be honest, I didn't expect it to fair well because it posts very, very poorly with regard to sharpness. At least on my monitor, the compressed version has poor sharpness. This is a product of my poor post-processing--the original is tack sharp. (the bridge does fade into the "haze" but the first tower is dead on in the original)

I have had some success shooting on days like this. I have a couple lighthouse shots with a similar background. All were taken on very, very cloudy days. There is not a whole lot of color in the sky by with a very long exposure, the color really gets brought out nicely. Furthermore, some ND grads stacked really make it pop out even more. I also think the artificial lighting enhances the background color in this shot. Although this is not a photoshop creation and is "as was taken" out of the camera, I wondered if it look realistic. (sometimes I find the best shots are the ones that really are real but you have to ask yourself, is this really real or a digital creation?) I do appreciate the positive feedback. It goes to prove to me once again that just because all you can see is a bright spot behind a ton of foggy clouds as the sun sets that there is still reason to pull out your camera and give it a go. I'm enjoying finding ways to capture good shots even when you don't have a breathtaking, classic, colorful sunrise/set.

Thanks again for the feedback--any further thoughts are greatly appreciated!

  1. Stephen--What a great suggestion! That makes a huge difference! Makes me wonder how much better my pictures could be if I knew the first thing about post processing! Thanks for the input, suggestion, and example. If I print this one I'll be sure to tweak the slider like you did.
  2. Stephen--I don't doubt your assessment at all but it's a tad bit "greek to me." :) If you get a spare minute and don't mind, please tweak this shot to how you think it would look best and repost it in this link--I respect your opinions and would be very interested to see what you have in mind. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts!
  3. Thanks for the comments! Pete--I need to update that bio...I do have Photoshop (although I have been miserably slow in learning to use it). So, I can try things out and will definitely try to do some experimenting! Thanks again for all the help!
  4. Great shot...very eye catching! I really like the tones and the exposure is spot on. If I had to be picky there is one small detail that could improve it...I would like to see the boat pointing the opposite direction (or, move to the left to shift the boat to the right side of the composition). I have found that in general I think shots are better if you follow this rule I made for myself: if something moves, allow it more space on the side which it is pointing. In other words, your boat is pointing out of the picture...I think it would be a better composition if it was pointing into the picture. But, let me reiterate that this is still a very, very good shot. It is getting the high marks it deserves. I would still consider it a great shot if I had taken it, but wanted to offer one (humble) opinion as food for thought for the future. Thanks for sharing!
  5. Thanks Pete! I appreciate your comments! I really like B&W photos but have done very little B&W so I am especially pleased with good feedback on this attempt. I always feel like my B&W shots are lacking the tonal range or contrast of good B&W captures I see from others. Thanks for the feedback!

To everyone--please be as critical as you can with the exposure, post-processing, and tonal range of this and my other B&W shots. When I take color shots I feel like I have a good grip of what is properly exposed and what is eye catching but I struggle to process my B&W and decide what exposure is best so feedback is appreciated!

  6. Ruben--Thanks for your comments!

John--Thanks for your kind words as well! If you need any help with shooting locations in Charleston, please do not hesitate to let me know! If my schedule permits, I could even meet up with you for some shooting. I look forward to seeing what compositions and shots you come away with!

  7. Lucas--Thanks for the comments. As for the "muddy" appearance, that is very possibly a compression issue because to be honest, I have never sharpened a single one of my pictures, much less resharpened after resizing. So, this is how it was shot, just shrunk down. With that said, sometimes my ND grad filters will fog up so that could be another possibility, especially since I think I was stacking filters for this shot to be more ND grad effect. You sound very thoughtful and also sound like you know what you are talking about so I hope you will return to my portfolio and offer your help on other shots. I haven't been able to spend much time on here recently but I promise to make it by your portfolio and leave some thoughts as soon as I get a spare minute.

JK-I appreciate your comments....I liked the idea behind the composition and think things turned out pretty well but my only problem is that I had to use my super wide angle lens, which made the sun and the lighthouse miniature. I guess the tree is the main subject in this shot though so perhaps it can carry the picture and the small details simply compliment things. I'm enjoying having the ND grads so that I can get some detail in the sand when I'm shooting--it has opened up a lot of doors for my compositions that I have been exploring and learning to use. Before I bought them (and learned to use them) I either had to silhouette the foreground or compose without it. Once again, thanks for your kind words and thoughts--you are a very trusted opinion and it is always nice to hear from you. I promise to swing by your portfolio for comments and ratings soon...things have been busy for me and will continue to be so for the next couple months but you're one of the people I make time to check regularly, even if I don't always get to leave comments every time I stop by.

This is a near perfect portrait! Your lighting, composition, and exposure are perfect! And, then there's the model...well, let's just say that I need to take a trip to Sweden if girls look like this there. :) She is mind-boggling gorgeous! Great work!
  8. Well done, Frank! I like your composition and your clarity and focus couldn't be better! Great work...as always! Keep it up...I haven't been by your portfolio to check your new work recently but will try to do so soon. Hope all is well--take care!

    Gold Seas

Rick--I really like your composition here and the exposure on the rocks is perfect! (not only the color, but also the great sharpness) I like the golden color up top and the white sea foam as well. The only criticism I would offer is the clouds didn't help you out very much toning the sun down--it's a tad bit on the bright side. I don't think it "ruins" the shot by any means...I still think the shot works well and is very, very good. The only point I'm making is there is a better shot out there--if a few clouds or a light haze had helped you out the viewer would see the sun more distinctly and it would probably have even scattered some more color across your sky. But, you definitely did the best you could with the day and sunset God gave you and you came away with a pleasing shot. I know from experience that it is often hard to get the perfect weather conditions to mitigate the sun's power but at the same time scatter color throughout the sky is rare--yet another photography challenge! Once again though, I'm being picky...although there is room for improvement (almost always is), this is a great shot exactly how it is.
