1.
yes, Oliver, I want to know about the split focus feature available in live view on the D810 and D5;
'It is used more for levelling than focusing, though' - precisely what I assumed from the limited material offered by Nikon,so I want to know if anyone has used it, if it was helpful, and how to use it.

 2.
yes,Andrew i noticed that when i took a few shots of a door correction off and on w/ 28mm f1.8, i wiil post later this week, after i get a good frame reference for comparison; the short of it is -- in camera correction appears to shift the subject, which is not surprising, but i have no quantitative evidence to supply now

 3.
yes, Andy on a d300, but on d800 it works fine -- and its short comings are readily exposed; Wouter, i am not insulted, i am interested in a wide angle zoom to replace it, the 18-35 is cheaper than tokina 16-28 and has higher resolution (DXO); my 28 f1.8 is not wide enough in all situations, and the tokina 16-28 , like the 14-24 f2,8, does not allow filters, plus i have a good set of 77mm filters

 4.
Ellis, that is my thinking too, since acr, Dxo,etc. use a database of camera profiles, so I'll try a few scenes with and without and see if i tell any difference; mainly i wanted to determine if in camera distortion correction produced any cropping

 5.
raw files are essentially digital negatives from the camera's sensor ; raw converters, and there are many will convert raw to other formats, and may allow various levels of development on raw files; try a web search for raw converters appropriate for your camera, and download some trial versions, play and determine which you like, and so on. nikon view nx2, a free download, allows you to view raw files, has some minimum editing/development capabilities; and, allows batch conversion to jpeg.
xmp files contain image metadata, including development settings,which can be deleted if you do not wish to keep those settings

 6.
elliot, that was my impression too, and technically correct , but , whereas, the auto crop works perfectly, there are issues -- in spring i took a series of photos with 17-55 and d800, where fallen leaves were still on ground and bronze in color, the leaves in the image looked like they were painted and scalloped, no amount of ps could overcome that. thank you
mary the new 24-85 is high on my list right now, it is not 2.8, but that is not a concern, my 300mm f4 is more than i had hoped -- epic; as is the 28mm 1.8, thank you, later this year, iwill spring for 24-70 or 24-120.
