Right I'm OK with the PS part, and one of the servies even supplies a helpful template. What I'm not sure about is how to design that goofy script. My experiences of doing text in PS are not happy ones.

Bogdan thanks for the excellent summary. I too have a D2-X and am wondering if my batteries for that camera will work with the D-3. Also, the accessories, like the AC power source you need to use to clean the sensor. Cheers....

I'm looking for a company that will print a color image but preferably offer
that retro 1950s/1960s look e.g., the photo of the Miami skyline at night with
the large red cursive script over the image spelling out "MIAMI BEACH --
Wishing you wree here" or someting like that. Anyone have any idea who does
that kind of work today? Thanks for any advice.

They are also great with repairs - they fixed two of my Nikon F-4s and were very reasonable.

I have a D2-X and the plastic thing keeps popping off. What's the downside to just leaving it off? the thing's always fogging up anyway. And I'm in Iraq where I can't just run down the street and buy a new one when I lose it.

The Logan Electric Company makes great metal boxes that hold 15-20 rolls per box at less than $20 per box from B&H. They're pretty rugged and a good way to transport/store slides.

I use it to print for shows and it's greta. The slight yellowing, which I have not seen BTW, is not an issue for B&W.

while we're on the subject, what ever happened to American Photographer, now American Photo? The articles used to be so fascinating and funny and well written. The cover photos were lovely -- remember Harry Callahan sitting in a boxing ring with the title, "How Harry Callahan Fought His Way to the Top"? They had a wedding photographer article that I still remember twenty plus years later. Now it's just (admittedly, exquisite) models, the prose is gibberish, and the articles are mainly geared toward steering buyings to their adversizers. Sort of like Pop Photo without all those fine print ads at the back.

The Kodak technical pubs are excellent.

C-41 films like BW400CN and XP-2 are great but they don't push well.

PS CS makes lovely contact sheets that you can output right onto your inkjet, and they look fabulous -- you can also user-define the size, so that your loupe can take a rest.
-
I don't think the CS 5000 RAW images are truly RAW in the sane you may associate with, say, a D2X.

The manual for my Nikon SB-800 says fresh NiHM batteries get more flashes than lithiums, which surprised me, and of course the cost is minimal for the NiMH batteries.

Does anyone know if the new series of printers (4880, 7880, 9880, etc) with the
vibrant magenta, or whatever they call it, require you to swap out the ink
carts like I had to on my 2400, thus wasting mucho ink, or are the matte and
glossy blacks (MK and PK) both plugged in to the printer at the same time, like
on the 3800? Either way, any idea how much ink that uses? Thanks in advance
for any assistance you can provide.

When in D.C. I get them back almost exactly two weeks after I drop them at the post office.

I have sent two of my F-4s to KEH and they did a great job for not too much money.

I saw War Photographer -- interesting movie. What was surprising giventhe depth of his work is how little coherent James Nachtway has to say about what he does. You can listed to Diane Arbus and get real insight into her craft. For Jim - and thi is fine, I guess, since he's not paid to speak -- there was little to be learned. But it was fascinating to watch him work.

Second the community darkroom at Glen Echo, which has a lot of good enlargers and large size trays.
The folks at Washington School of Photography are pretty hapless in general and I'm not sure their darkroom stil works.

Al, if you want to build one, the enclosures come in infinite variety from www.newegg.com.

I got a 1 TB (yes, one terabyte) USB 2/Firewire drive from newegg.com -- it's a BUFFALO drivestation, and it was $299 a few months ago. I have been very pleased.

Peter, you don't say how you are printing. if on the R2400 or similar with the K3 inkset, you don't need (can't have actually) an RGB image for the purpose of printing uwing "Advanced BW or AWB). So, just scan as monochrome or convert your RGB photos to monochrome before printing. Any color cast you see in ABW mode is strictly b/c a) you have selected a toning option or b) b/c of a clog.

I have been a dyed in the wool film shooter mainly because I love my F-4s and my
lenses (28 1.4 and 85 1.4 mainly) so much.
Now that the D-3 is coming out I'm thinking of giving it a try.
How worried should I be that dust is going to be a major problem if I change
back and forth between the 28 and 85 a couple times a day? (The dust in places
like Egypt is so fine it's more like talcum powder -- if talcum powder were
dirty and awful.) I manage to keep my lenses and cameras looking pretty clean
on the inside, but I gather that digital is a lot more finicky.
I suppose an alternative would be to go with a D-200 or D-300 and a 17-35 lens
that would not come off the camera.

Martin, I have an ElectronBlue22 and it's lovely. And big.

I'll admit to being frugal, and not wanting to buy another AC adapter for $100 or whatever, something I will use five times and ten discard. But mainly, travelling extensively, I'd just rather not have to lug around more stuff.
