  1. I don't have a CM, but I have a minilux and other pocket 35mm cameras.

I love the Minilux - its size is perfect, (not too small) and it is rock solid. Then lens and color rendition are up there with the best of Leica's.

Anyway, some people may like the T3 portability. I sometimes use it but the fun for the T3 is the accessories, the flash bracket and the filter adapter for use with polarizers etc.

  2. Lucas,

    a 50mm lens does not become a 80mm one for a EF-S camera.

    IT stays a 50mm lens.

    Nor will a 28mm or 35mm become a 50mm.

The FOV will be different - but we all know that. Anyway, personally, I think a fast normal prime is always useful, regardless of the format involved.

  3. This is definitely not an interesting thread.

Anyway, as a comparison between the two lenses, this thread is pretty useless. But it is good that your are testing the ultron. The sculpture is soft because of a mis-focus issue - not camera shake.

If anything, Paul, you should get your ultron re-calibrated.

Btw, frankly I am not surprised by the light captured by the ultron, because a f1.7 lens is a f1.7 lens.

  4. Anthony:

Your devotion to your children is apparent in your photographs. It is a blessing that everybody is safe and healthy; however, the financial blow must have been considerable.

In times of pressure, people have different ways to cope. For me, the simple act of loading film, wind the trigger, press the shutter etc is a tonic in itself.

I hope you get out of these troubles ASAP.

  5. Yes, I am keeping my digital bodies, but there is no doubt shooting slides is fun.

Now wait till you grab a Leica M or even better a medium format camera (Blad's are nice, but Rolleiflexes also work) and see those slides in 6X6.

  6. My Sony miniDV has major noise problems in this setting. Have you tried your 828 movie mode in similar lighting conditions? Not good.

Do you think any $150 camera would a smaller chip fare better?

So the Memory Stick Duo is more a better deal because it is something that you may actually use after the conference.

  7. Andrew:

The 50 CFi is one sharp lens. OK, I used the adapter - and I find there is a very very slight vignetting - but not noticeably at all when viewing slides or using negatives. However, it does show up when I scan the slides...

Anyway, the BIGGEST problem is that once you attach the adapter, it is impossible to remove! I am not the only one with this problem.

  8. I have a Canon IXUS and Canon IS, which obviously have better movie modes (In fact, I BOUGHT them for their movie modes). I don't use them to shoot pictures, but I use them as a pocket video camera.

The 640X480 30FPS is actually quite good, much better than the ones MPEG4 capable cameras you find on SONY etc.

I have better cameras for stills.

  9. I agree with QG. However, it is a complicated issue.

Since the focal length does not change, the depth of field in terms at the sensor and the film level should be the same, you see the same degree of blur in the out-of-focus areas.

However, the PhaseOne image is cropped. If the image is enlarged to the size of an A3 print, the amount of enlargement required by the digital back is greater than that for 120 film. This would increase the blur. Hence, when using the PhaseOne, the lens can be said to have a shallower DOF that the marks indicated.

  10. On the subject of Pentax 645 - the dial on the left hand side of the

top deck - (the one that allows you to select the different modes)

was torn off. I could not find it.How much does it cost to replace

    the dial.

  11. Outstanding lens. Not only does it rock, but:

    1) the contrast when the lens is wide open is unbelievable. The scans does not do it justice.

    2) other lenses like a 85F1.4 may be just as effective in isolating the subject, but the Leica 35F1.4 is incredible by combining wide angel with a narrow DoF. I think this lens has a special fingerprint because of this.

  12. 1) Eliot says of the ZI and Bessa 3A: ?The dimensions aren't similar?? Sure they are,? ?My comments are based upon its specs and based upon the general shape and layout of the ZI, which really place it in the CV family more than anything else.?

Mike?s pictures completely squash that argument! I cannot honestly see how you can take the Bessa?s VF and put it in the ZI. Well, Eliot, you should be better informed.

    2) No innovation: What? Flash sync is 1/125s vs 1/50s

    3) CV?s build quality: OK you own the 15mm Heliar. I would be the first to admit that there?s a definite difference in quality between that lens and the typical Leica lenses. I am also a discriminating user. However, there is also a major improvement in build quality in the latest CV offerings. The latest lenses do rival the Leicas when it comes to build quality. My 35mm Summilux ASPH does not impress me. So get an up-to-date, informed opinion.

    4) And finally, Eliot says of the 50/2 Planar: ?I bet if you look at the designs, you'll see that they are just minor modifications of existing DG or other designs, not anything substantively new. Want to spend $ 827 for a rebadged 50/2 Planar with an M-mount, go ahead.?

And pray, Eliot, how much are you going to pay for a 50 Summicron which is a minor modification of a 50-year old design?

I am not a Zeiss supporter. I may not even buy any ZI products. They may suck.

However, I hate to see people championing ignorant, false views on innovative products.

  13. I bought a 88CM and lenses and the prisms and the Hass-compatible film backs from them before. The prices are cheap. The lenses are not as great as the Hass ones, but the tilt-sand swivels, fisheyes are really great deals. the 65mm that I have is incredibly flare proof, and testing shows that on 35mm it is SHARPER than my Canon 24-85.
