the canon 300 f4 L IS is a great lens from all reviews and not overly expensive, I think even with IS it takes some getting used to, and with a 1.4 TC on a 1.6 crop you can get good reach 480 and 672, IS will be required with out a tripod over 300, or less for some.

Why not a 20D with 17-40F4L around $1700
-
Why is this better than the one that came with the lens

'IS on and fast shutter speeds are what get sharp photos, even on a tripod'
Every thing on this site and Canon's instructions say turn off IS on tripod.
What is the deal ?

shot with 30D,300mm f4L, small fine, standard mode, spot meter, timer
thanks again, Ross

sample shots on tripod no IS at 20ft f4@1/100s,f5.6@1/50s,f11@1/13s
maybe its just me

'Perhaps post up a sample photo for our perusal? With EXIF info intact if possible.'
how do you keep EXIF when downloading to PN ?

I have tried it hand held and on a tripod, it has IS so you should be able to hand hold it in bright light, have not done a comparable test yet will try this week end shooting the same subject with both lenses, maybe my expectations are to high, does anybody know the sweet spot to test it at for sharpness ?
Thanks everyone
Ross

I must admit a little disapointment in my new EF300 F4L, my EF 24-105 F4L
appears sharper, does that seem right ? I would have thought the prime to be
sharper its also not as fast to focus. Any thoughts ? bad copy ? or mormal

17-40f4L is great, but not very wide on a 1.6 crop, I got it for my 30D and wish i had got a wider lense (10mm)

Kirk BH-3, more than you want to spend, but don't put a cheap head on that set up, at $255 it can't be beat. only 19 oz. http://www.kirkphoto.com/ballheadbh3.html
lots of talk on this site, do a search for many opinions

Of course all of this huffing and puffing greatly influences the artistic merit of the photos being taken with these most modern of cameras.
Carlos,it couldn't have been said any better

Thanks for your input, decided on the Kirk BH-3, the RSS BH-40 would have been my choice if funds permited, a very nice option indeed but $120 more killed my budget, after all I have got to report this to the boss (wife)
Thanks again, Ross

Has any one used the Kirk BH-3 ball head, I have a 30D and 300F4L
with a TC 1.4x on it, will this the smaller of the Kirk heads be
sufficient ? any body use and like or dislike this head ? your help
would be appreciated. Thanks

If you are in a vehicle with other customers, they will be a little upset if you are constantly changing lens', I went on a safari in 5 contries with and with out people, most of the time my 70-200 F2.8L w TC 2x worked great and that was with an SLR not DSLR, it sounds like you have sufficient equipment, take to much and thats all you will be doing, you said its not a photo safari per se, so try to enjoy the trip, invest in protection for your current gear ie water, dust, insurance and have a fantastic trip. The Okavango delta is fantastic place, Dead vlei is also a fantastic place
