1.
"I regularly analyze my lens line up"
...this VERY strongly suggests you are far more interested in gear than you are in taking photos. I was a pro for years and knew many others, not a single one of them analyzed their 'lens line up' EVER, let alone on a regular basis.

 2.
It seems to me that Pentax are in grave danger of following Minolta.

The Q system is a joke that no one wants, ditto the ridiculous K-01. They seem to have no idea at all of what market they want to compete in. They cannot compete in the full frame arena, Sony who have FAR more money to throw at full frame have already learned that it is an expensive mistake to take that route.
It seems to me that the most sensible route is to grow a top notch APS-C system and combine that with some 'retro' APS-C DSLR's. I still cannot work out why no one has released a metal bodied simple DSLR in the style of Pentax MX/LX, Nikon FM etc.

Steve.M.

 3.
James from what you have said, they would all suit you for the specified use.

However, KX/KR/550D etc are all lower end models and with lower end DSLR's you get pokey little viewfinders which will shock you how small after a film SLR...I would avoid them.

The budget you have set is sensible and buying used is very, very sensible. Go to Currys or anywhere else, and handle & try; 40D/50D & D300 & K7. Buy which ever feels best in your hand.

I would stick to these higher end models as they all have super build quality and better viewfinders. They all also are pretty much at the lowest price they will reach...ie you will not lose too much money if you do trade them in any time soon.

I suggest you buy from a dealer, not a private seller on ebay. If you buy from certain UK used dealers you will only pay a little more than ebay AND get a 6 or 12 month warranty...which is WELL worth having with a digital camera, as some faults can take time to show, unlike film cameras.

I had the 40D it is super, the 50D has much better LCD, the D300 is now in your budget (forget D200 - too old now) I now use K7 as I like the much smaller size/weight compared to the Nikon and Canon semi-pro cameras...and I love the super & tiny Pentax digital prime lenses. However, If you can bear the extra size & weight of the Canon or Nikons, you will gain super fast AF which might be a deciding factor if you do street work. The Pentax AF is super, just not as lightning quick as C & N.

So; 1. Handle at Currys, 2. Check used lists on WWW of LCE and Ffordes, both good UK dealers (used both many times...just decide which cam you want then watch the site every week until the right item appears at the right price.)

cheers Steve.

 4.
Hi,

My LX3 when it reviews the photos or when you playback a photo, on both the camera rear LCD and when shown on a TV, the brightest highlight areas of all the photos taken flash back and forth between white and black. When the photos are downloaded onto the PC, there is no problem. It seems just in playback/review mode.

Is this a camera problem? anyone have any ideas?

cheers Steve.

 5.
Javier, are you still JPEG shooting? if yes, what in camera settings do you use? how much sharpening? do you use the CA or the distortion in camera corrections? and what if any post shooting correcting do you use?

cheers Steve.

 6.
Hi,

Just wondered if anyone here has used the Pentax 18-55mm WR for any 'serious' work at all, or just assumed it is not good enough.

If anyone has done so, any tips for getting the best out of it?

cheers Steve.

 7.
Hi James,
This old post below by me may be of interest:

Just to say, I have been using, buying & selling most of the Yashica and Contax C/Y lenses for the last 8 years or so. There are some posts with incorrect info here, so to correct...
When the Contax RTS system first appeared, almost all the first range of lenses were made in West Germany...only slightly later did Zeiss start out sourcing SOME of the Zeiss lenses to the Yashica factory in Japan. After a fairly short time, most of the lesser Contax lenses were made solely in Japan, with the more exotic lenses still made in Germany. But there are lenses which 'buck the trend' so to speak.
Some people seem to think all the earlier AE lenses were made in Germany and all the later MM lenses made in Japan...this is also incorrect. Many AE ones were also made in Japan and also many of the later MM lenses made in Germany.
Examples:
50/1.4: very early AE ones were German made, slightly later AE and all MM were Japan made.
25/2.8: early AE were German, later MM were both Japan & German.
18/4: early AE were German whilst later MM were both Japan & German.
28/2: All AE & MM only made in Germany.
28/2.8: Small run of very early AE German, almost all AE & all MM Japan only.
35/2.8: All AE & MM seem to be Japan only...I am not aware of any German ones.
45/2.8: Some very early AE German, almost all AE & all MM are Japan.
85/1.4: Early AE German, later MM both Germany & Japan.
85/2.8: AE are both German & Japan, MM are German only..never come across a Japan MM one.
135/2.8: All AE and MM seem to be Japan only.
15/3.5: Only ever made in Germany and only in AE.
21/2.8: Only ever made in MM and all were Japan made.
So, there is no real pattern...I have a complete list of all the Contax AE & MM lenses and where they were made...from much research.
Of the Yashica lenses, I would say they are excellent and often superb and are possibly one of the all time over looked lens makers. If you want DIRT CHEAP and excellent, try ML 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.7, 50/2, 135/2.8C, 200/4C. Slightly more expensive but also well worth buying are 21/3.5, 24/2.8, 55/2.8 macro, 100/3.5 macro (superb lens).
cheers Steve.M. (UK)
