1.
Dear all,

I suspect that the sensor of my Canon 350D is damaged.

Please have a look at those images. I got vertical stripes from the top to the very bottom on the right right side of an image. They appear more or less strong but generally they are in almost every image I shoot.

I can't figure out a pattern, the stripes appear regardless of: ISO-Speed, which type of lens attached, aperture and exposure speed, CF card type or size.

The only thing I am quite sure about is, that it is no dirt. I cleaned the sensor several times and when I look at the sensor I can not see any scratches.

Still, in a few images those stripes also do not appear. It is a really strange phenomenon that I can not explain. Should I consider buying a new camera since this one got to old to repair the sensor for a bunch of money?

What steps to you suggest? Anyone having the same experience? Could this be a software issue and might it help to reinstall the firmware?

Thanks for your suggestions!

  2.
Hello,
after returning from a festival my shots sometimes had strange banding / stripes within the pictures. I googled for the problem but havn't found out anything about that so far. It is not the usal banding that might occur in low-level-light-shots because it occurs just at one specific position within the picture.
please see: http://www.muenchphoto.de/stripes0.jpg for a fullsize pic and http://www.muenchphoto.de/stripes1.jpg for a crop.
It does not come up in every picture, sometimes its less sometimes more visible. I can't say anything about the ISO but I suspect that I get it more often at higher ISO speeds because its more visible if its a dark shot.
If I make a sensor cleaning, there are no scratches at the surface or anything.

Is my sensor screwed?

Thanks for your effort,

  3. for image-managing purposes I mainly use adobe bridge or google picasa (which is

unbelievable fast and easy). first step will be to sort out the duplicates and LR seems to do

that fine until now. when the database and with that a clean filesystem is built up, I'll give

imatch a try - its always good to explore new programs that might improve the workflow.

    thanks for your recommendation

  4. hey thanks,

why do you think its the best to import them in place? wouldn't it be better to copy them

and even make a backup to another destination? Sorry but I don't understand right now

how I would get a physically sort-out library. Isn't lightroom just going to ignore

duplicates and importing just one file which then is part of the database? If so, my

database would show a well-sorted library but my harddisk (on which I travelled roudn the

world .. haha good one) would still be a mess.

I thought if I import all the images with Lightroom and have them copied to a new place I

will automaticaly get some order on my harddrive by just using the copied files which

contain of non-duplicates and erasing all the original files which I don't longer need.

Do you think that could work out or did I get wrong how Lightroom actually works ;)

    ciao

  5. Hey there,

I just copied all of my pictures that I have shot of one year traveling around the world on my harddisk.

Because I often did multi-backups I think I ended up with some GB of duplicates here. Just how could I

find out and manage that and build up a solid library? How would you start?

Do you think the best would be to import everything to Lightroom?

    thanks in advance

  6. Hey there,

I am searching for a cheap TFT as I am starting to study and dont have a bunch

    of money to spend.

While looking for a average TFT in a price region between 0-300 EUR or 0-450

US-Dollars, I found this Samsung Syncmaster 931c which I could buy for around

    300 Euros.

Samsungs says this TFT does have 15% more colour-accuracy than usual TN-

Panels, especially green and red-tones should be strong and detailed. It has a

contrast of 700:1 (dynamic 2000:1), DVI and analog, 300 brightness, 160? and

so on. Sounds about right for a cheap TFT I am aware that I cant expect more

    of it!

But as we now these are only the numbers of the manufacturer. Does anyone of

you have experience with the Samsung Syncmaster 931c? Or can you recommend

another TFT in this pricerange with a good Display that shows colours very

correct and has got a good contrast?

Would be awesome to hear some opinions.

    best wishes!

  7. heyho,

some news: canon santiago de chile found out that indeed only the AA Filter ontop of the CMOS Sensor has been affected by this scratch. this shop can repair it for around 120 EUROS which is moderate and better than i expected.

anyway i did some research before giving my camera to repair and which might be interesting for other photographers that have to handle with the same problem:

canon in thailand would charge around 110 US-Dollars for this operation (changing the AA Filter, also known as "Low Pass Filter Assembly"). They would need 1-2 days for this. I think Thailand is very trustable for this but the shippingcosts let me hesitate to it with them.

canon in argentina and germany would need to see the camera first, in germany they would charge another 40 euros only for checking the camera.

indeed a good alternative is to order a replacment filter at canon directly! The cost for it is 92 US-Dollars.. Canon charges another 6 US for shipping it (only US). You can order it under this number:

    732-521-7679

once you call assk for a "low Pass Filter Assembly" or the ordernumber:

    CY3-14-89-000

I think its not very hard to change this filter on your own and ideed its alot cheaper! If i would live in the US i would do it without hesitating.

Well thats it, i will get my camera back on thursday and i hope everything will be fine again :)

    ciao, marcel

  8. well, is it possible to buy the AA-Filter? I am pretty sure I only scratched the glass and wouldn?t hesitate to change the glass by myself.

Anyway, I am 21, going to study in a few months and after 1 year of travels I won?t have any cent left for a damn cmos sensor costing me like 600 EURs. Thats the problem by the way: I would definately send the camera to canon, because I still do have warranty in Thailand where I bought this body, but I am well aware, that after cleaning the camera so often by myself, I won?t get a chance by the canon technicans to insist for my warranty...

Ah by the way I used a technique I found in a disscussion board - maybe even here, for cleaning my sensor. I just use lens cleaning tissues (no microfaser) and as pure alcohol as I can find (not as easy in south america, asia and so on)... in this case 97 degree.

I am usualy very careful .. and even this time I dont know how this scratch could appear.. but well, the fact is he is there.

I cleaned a lot again over the scratch, trying to scrub every kind of dust and stuff away.. but it still is there. So I am pretty sure it is a scratch, altough it couldnt be too deep. Well, at least deep enough to appear in my pictures - furthermore I can see the scratch with my eye while sensorcleaning.

I will upload pictures of the scratch soon (sorry I dont have a good connection here so far)

    best wishes, marcel

  9. Hey Folks,

yes very bad news: I think I got a scratch on my cmos sensor. Its visible on

pictures like a usual dust spot .. begining from around F11 if there is only a

plain colour showed.. like blue skies etc.

I know that its maybe the worst that could have happened.. and that I won?t

get any guarantee and its very expensive to replace and so on.. so please dont

make me cry again, its hard enough ;)

any alternatives? removing a scratch from a sensor, impossible? no glass-

    polishing whatsoever?

would be open for any hints :)

    thank you, cheers

  10. thank you so much for your answers.

well yes, its my first high-speed B/W film and I have to rate it after developing. to be honest, after reading your answers, I really dont expect anything good, because I got this rolls of film, well .. in mexico and traveled afterwards through cuba, venezuela, ecuador, peru, and bolvia.. and now I am using it. no good start, huh? :)

we will see soon. i am heading to santiago in a few days, and I think I will be able to develop it there.

    best wishes, marcel

  11. hey I think it was two times hand baggage checked x-ray..

In mexico i got those 3 rolls of films from a new york times photojournalist who said it has been x-rayed at the airport and so she thinks its not longer usable.. I should try it.

Later I flew to cuba where a handcheck was denied and I had to get it x-rayed again! (well they said aswell, that the x-ray shouldn't harm the film.. but hey, which cuban authority guy has a clue about professional B/W film, huh?)

Well I will let you know as soon as I am in Santiago and be able to devolop the rolls. Goddamn.. of course I got some nice pictures in La Paz this day, which I would love to see without any picture-errors.. well we will see :)

still got my digital slr for backup :)

    best wishes, marcel

  12. Hey all,

just a simple question: I am currently shooting Ilford Delta 3200 B/W Film which

I forgot to take out of my handchecked baggage - and so its x-rayed!

Can't develop this kind of film here in La Paz and so I will shoot 3 rolls of

this film (well knowing I can't depent on the pictures) before getting the

surprising result in santiago de chile hehe..

what do you expect? totaly ruined pictures?

    best regards, marcel

  13. hello all,

well, this is going to be a very different thread but I hope some of you will

stick to it and give me some answers.

today I will ask you about your experiences with professions related to

    photography or professional photography.

i read some threads here, which basicly deal with the topic, that getting

professional in photography means to give up your hobby, and finaly destroys it.

well I am not sure about my personal attitude to this, because I am very

optimistic, but I see the point.

anyway, I traveled for about 10 months now and after another 2 months its time

to go back to germany and start to study. in the last months I discovered

photography as a big hobby, and I won't hesitate to do it, or something related

    to it as a profession.

I was also thinking about going into advertisment, art director, creative

director.. and so on but I am sure, there is more to do! is there anyone who

could recommend his job, or experiences with it :) It would be very nice to

share some thoughts about it or to give some advices.. you know I am young and

    naive ;)

I need any information related.. I just need to decide what to study :)

Thanks in advance, and please don't hesitate to tell me about the negative aspects.

best regards, Marcel desde Bolivia, La Paz

  14. okay, no answer. but in between i have got some information. it seems like it is impossible to buy other B/W Film than Tri-400 .. for 48 Bolivianos (thats expensive, huh?)

anyway if you need anything really urgent go here:

    The best one to

develop is Kavlin, in Potosi Street #1136, near the Murillo Square. There is

another agfa place in calle ayacucho and another one in El Prado to buy

    stuff.

    best regards, marcel

  15. Hello,

my first question: Does anyone know a good professional Lab (prefer personal

experiences with it) .. maybe in La Paz? Got some B/W Films to develop and I am

also thinking about duplicating some of my already developed negatives..

travelling for one year so I prefer to develop it localy!

I also need to buy some new B/W and Kodak Portra NC rolls!

Another thing: If someone searches for a good Place in Ecuador go here:

    Ronaldo Jones, Laboratorio fotografico profesional

    Lizardo Garcia E9-104 y Andres Xaura - Telefax: (593-2) 2507 622

    e-mail: rpjones@interactive.net.ec , Quito, Ecuador

It is a very personal place.. very cheap and excellent quality!

    Best wishes, Bye Marcel

  16. Hello everyone,

I have problems with opening RAW Files after installing Adobe CreativSuite.

Since this time I use Adobe Bridge for browsing and managing my Files.

I use a Canon EOS 350D and have installed the Canon software aswell like

Camerawindow to extract the files from the Camera and 2 Photoeditors which are

    similar to Adobe Bridge

    My Problem:

Before installing Adobe CS, I could open RAW Files that I've shot in Black and

White Modus of the Camera actually like I shot - in Black and White! Now I've

got the problem, that Photoshop aswell as Adobe Bridge converts the files

automaticaly to colour format when opening and viewing them. I can't get the

actual black and white file which I've shot - what's pretty bad for me beause

I actually like the Black and White Modus of the camera and it's nice and

contrasty tones which I'll get immediately without playing around in Photoshop.

The strange thing is, that when I use one of my Canon programs and open the

RAW Files they are still as they've been shot: black and white. So it seems to

be a problem of the adobe software only.

Oh and by the way: I used Photoshop before to open RAW files shot in Black and

White and everything worked fine. I believe it was after installing Adobe CS,

that the B/W changes to colour automaticaly

any suggestions? Do you know of a possibility to change this issue at the

options or something? I couldn't find anything so far

I would be very happy about your reply and advices.

    thanks in advance

    cheers, marcel

  17. hey. thank you guys. I now found everything I needed right here in Mexico City. There 2 good shops around here for equipment. I only needed a filter and a tripod and this kind of stuff was very cheap too.

if someone needs the adresses just contact me and I'll find out for you.

    bye, marcel

  18. Hello,

has anyone experience with quality camera shops in Mexico. I need a place to buy

some equipment aswell as some professional films. I am currently in Jalisco,

Guadalajara but will leave the City tomorrow to some places at the pacific

coast. If there is an option to buy some stuff over there, just tell me.

otherwise I expect that there are some good shops in Mexico City?

greetings and thanks in advance. adios, marcel

  19. Hey folks,

I am currently here in San Francisco and I am trying to find a reasonable

quality fotoshop to buy some new filters and some film and maybe a good shop to

    develop some pictures. any suggestions?

and I also ask you for your opinion what to do here around. anything realy worth

going around here besides the normal stuff like golden gate bridge, you know? :)

I am also thinking about doin a short trip to grand canyon, yosemite, santa

cruz. what I could need are some insider tipps from locals or best viewpoints,

when and where to go. also I am always open for local traveltipps and stuff like

that because it is very hard to get around here without a good public service.

thanks a lot, feel free to post anything related to the questions - I might need

    the information! bye, marcel

  20. Hello,

I am very unhappy with my Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lense. For this

reason I like to sell this lense as soon as possible. I am thinking

about getting a 70-200mm lens, which I got to try first.

my problem is: what to do with the range in between my 10-22 mm EF-S

lense and then perhaps a 70-200m lense. With my analog Contax Camera I

mostly use a 50mm 1.4 lense which I like a lot. Due this reason I

thought about getting a fixed lense for my Canon body aswell. Should I

go for a 35mm lense which will be a 56mm due the crop factor?

Or better go for a zoom lense because for having a larger range of

angle and to be more flexible?

what's your suggestion, what says your experience?

    thanks for answers! bye, marcel
