  1. In the early days of my photographic life I was fortunate to have

access to a well equipped darkroom at Scott Air Force Base, in

Illinois, that all stationed there could use. This was back in 1965.

I wonder if any one here knows if the military is still providing

such services to it's members, and if so how are they handling the

digital transformation. What kind of hardware and software are being

    used?

  2. What's hard about Photoshop, or any good photo editing application, is just developing the skills to use it's tools. Just like darkroom processing this is just a matter of practice. Although I use Corel Photo-Paint, and have used Elements, I read PhotoShop books, and now and than, take a PhotoShop class. I have found that all of it translates to these other programs. You might want an alterntive to PhotoShop just because of the rediculos price, but all of the good programs have the same basic tools that you, as a photographer, will need, and you just can't get around having to learn how to use them.
  3. I am running an Epson 1280, and use the Heavyweight Matte for most of my printing, but when I want glossey or near glossey prints I use the following. Konica Inkjet Paper QP, Ilford Classic Gloss, Ilford Classic Pearl, and Ilford Printasia. The Ilford papers require a -8 adjustment to the magenta in the printer driver.

I have found boxes of 75 sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 Ilford Printasia at the BJ's Wholesale Club in my town for much less than I could find it anywhere else, and our Sams Club has some of the other Ilford papers at equally good prices. If there is a Sams Club or BJ's near you check them out.

I really love the Konica paper I use the 13 X 19 when I want big glosses. Hope this helps.

  4. I have a Palm Tungsten E. It displays a pritty good image, and I was

wondering if anybody has come up with a way to connect a digital

camera, like the Canon 10D, to this thing to show images during and

after shooting? Sure would be nice if there was a way.

    Thanks

  5. This question is in referance to the thread started by Jay De Fehr,

titled "Example Portrait", but off the topic of that thread. In the

thread Giampiero Scuderi says of an excellant photo of a little

girl, "...keep in mind this is just a snapshot, not a posed

portrait, obviously." Not so obvious to me. Are all candids simply

snapshots? Than David Haynes refers to the photo of his daughter,

that looks like a portrait to me, as a snapshot.

I always thought of a snapshot as a photo taken by a person who does

not concider himself or herself a photographer, and the photo is

proof of that. So, what is a snapshot?

  6. I have the Lexar Jumpshot Cable card reader. It came with with the

Professional 256 card. It is supposed to show up on the computer as a

drive from which you can drag and drop the files to your hard drive.

Well I have'nt been able to get it to work or show up as anything.

The drive software for it is supposed to be on the card. That didn't

work so I went to Lexars web site and downloaded the soft ware and

    installed it, still no go.

I am running Windows 98SE, on which it is supposed to work. Anybody

have this problem? How did you fix it?

    Thanks

  7. I to have been concerned about scratches on the LCD display of my new Canon 10D. When Joe mentioned plastic overlays I thought about the transparent stick on plastic for protecting the screen of my Palm Pilot. It easeley peeles off when you want to replace it. I will be cutting some of that as soon as I log off here. You can find this stuff at Staples or Office Max.

    Thanks for the idea.

  8. When I purchaced my 10D I also got a 256mb(Lexar Professional

CompactFlash) card for about $90.00. This card is advertised as being

    a 40X card.

At Ritz I found a 256 Lexar, said to be a 10X card, for about $30.00

less. My question is has any one who has used both dedected any

significant disadvantage in using the 10X in a 10D. I'll gladly

spring for the extra $30.00 if it makes a noticable difference.

    Thanks

  9. My second set with my new 10D, a series of about 7 shots, out of

about 200, had these little white spots. The 7 are all consecutive

closeups of this little girl. These were the only shots from the set

that had the spots. Can anyone explain what these are, and how to

    avoid them in the future?

    Using Lexar Professional 256mb card.

    Thanks

  10. OK guys I did it. After much shopping, and reading, and seeking your experianced opinions on the three cameras under concideration (Minolta 7hi, the 300D, and the 10D), I went to my local Camera shop and purchaced the Canon 10D. I will get back to you with some of my experiances with it. Thanks for your help.
  11. One of the reasons I had decided to buy the 10D, insted of the 300D

is because I thought that with the PC connection I would not have to

bother with a voltage adapter to protect the camera from trigger

voltages (I use studio flash). Upon learning that this is not so, I

am now wondering are there any real advantages to spending the extra

money for the 10D, other than the color (The all black is so cool,

    but not $500.00 cool)?

I looked at the specs, side by side, and with my non technical eye I

could'nt find that much differance. Could my non technical eye be

missing something critical to a portrait/wedding/fine arts

    photographer?

    Thanks

  12. I have read many reviews, and they have all been positive, some more than others, but positive, and this is why I am concidering the 7hi. But all the reviews and openions I have read are by professional reviewers who probably did'nt actually spend his own money for it and probably uses something more on the high end in his real life as a photographer.

As the last straw in my decesion making I would like to hear from a person who has purchaced the camera and uses it every day doing portraits, weddings, art, and personal stuff. Is he, or she glad they spent their hard earned money for the camera, or not. Is it satisfying as an everyday camera or not. Just want to hear from a few real users.

    Thanks
