1.
Thank you all for your replies and suggestions, but as some of you have stated, it looks like the Coolpix P300, just will not sync with my external flash, by changing any of its settings. I do plan to look into the Nissin Di866 flash that Rodeo Joe spoke of. A little flash that I can hold in my hand would be more useful to me with the P300 than a studio flash anyway. If anybody has used that flash with the P300, I would be glad to hear about it.
Thanks again.

  2.
I had the bright idea of trying to get my Coolpix P300 to fire an external flash by means of the optical slave built into the studio flash. The cameras flash does indeed trigger the external, but all the shots I take seem to be lit by the cameras flash, and not the external. I get pretty much the same results no matter the shutter speed or aperture. I compare shots with the external powered on, and off. I taped an opaque piece of paper in front of the cameras flash, so it’s light is reflected to the rear. It still fires the external, and I still get lighting that looks like it’s from the cameras flash. I don’t understand why the camera seems to see its own flash, and not the much more powerful external. Am I missing something here?

  3.
I got my Flashwave 2 kit, and found that it won't fire my old Vivitar flash units. I tried it using the pc cord, and the hotshoe. The day it arrived I got it to fire them, but only intermittently. I tried them today, and they would not fire these units at all, but It works fine with my Excalibur monolights. Everytime I hit the button they would flash, but I really bought it to use with the smaller flash units, for the portability. I am puzzled as to why the Flashwave works with one flash, and not the others. Am I missing something here, is there something I should try, before sending them back to Amazon?

I have a Western Digital external drive, which is always pictured as standing upright like a book, in a book case. I would like to lay it on it's side, so I don't have to worry about knocking it over, while it is running, but I can't tell which side to lay it on, so that the drive itself will not be upside down. Can anyone give me a clue, or does it even matter?

  5.
Yes, I am a portrate photographer and am looking to offer my services as a portrate photographer, to the families, or institutions that care for special needs people. The jobs I mentioned above were taken at group homes, of about seven to ten people. I shot each person, and a group shot. The house hung portrates on the wall, and the families purchaced some. I would like to do more group jobs like that, and for individual families. Some of the individuals require a lot of patiants, time, and a lot of shots. All of which I am willing to provide.

My concern is how to word the advertisments, and where to place them.

  6.
Thank you all for your responses, but I don't plan to use any of the photos I have for advertising. I am just trying to think of a way to reach interested people, and tell them what I can do for them. Are there orginizations I can contact, should I even us the term, "people with special needs"? How do I approach the subject? Has anybody here targeted this specific market? I would like to here your experiances.

I was asked to photograph the residents of a house that cares for people with special needs. I did that job, everyone was pleased with the work, and I got a couple more jobs from word of mouth. I enjoyed the work and would like to advertise my services, but I am not sure how to do it in a tasteful way. I wonder if anybody here has any experience, or suggestions they would like to pass along.

I have an old Windows 95 PC, in which I had put a SCSI card to run my Minalta film scanner. About five years ago I bought a HP loaded with Windows XP, and a DSLR, so I had not thought much about the old computer, or the Minolta film scanner. Now I am thinking about scanning some of my old negatives. If I take the SCSI card out of that old machine and put it into the XP machine, would it work?

Thanks for all the replies. You gave me plenty to think about, and I decided to use my Smugmug URL. I created a gallery, and a password, than I designed cards using Coreldraw with my Smugmug URL, gallery name, password, and email address.

Over the weekend I took some shots at a craft fair, and gave the cards to those I photographed. Now we will just wait and see. Again thanks.

I would like to be able to put the URL to my Smugmug gallories on business cards, but they are ridiculously long, and I'm thinking no normal person would try to type one out. I have searched SmugMug to find out if they offer a way to alter a galleries URL, but have found nothing. So many photographers use the site, I'm sure somebody has addressed this problem. Is there a fix?

I moved them off the card to my hard drive, but it came wrapped in all these folders. I haven't a clue what else is in the other folders, or what it has to do with the actual m2ts files. I want to get the files of by themselves to make them easer to get to. Yes you are right the software that came with the camera is beyond stinky.

I have an XP machine and a Vista laptop, but I have only done the AVCHD on the Vista. I used Adobe Premier Elements 6 with the files from my DV camera with great success, but it won't deal with AVCHD. I tried the trial version of Premier Elements 7 which is supposed to do the job, but I personally didn't have much luck with it, but I think I like Corel VideoStudio 12, and am thinking of buying it. It does a good job of finding, rendering, and converting the files.

This camera belongs to my Church, and they put me in charge of making it work. Before I got my hands on it I had never heard of AVCHD, but I need to get a handle on it because these people think I am some kind of expert.

To find the .m2ts files from my Panasonic ag-hmc70 I have to wade through all these folders, avchdl/avchdtn/bdmv/backup/stream. I assume there is a purpose for all this, but can I, once the files are gotten to, just move them to a folder of my own making, for convenience?

How do you feel about printing your own shots? Of course these days that just means making your images viewable, and presentable in some way, as apposed to having someone else do them. I have always felt that processing, and printing was so much a part of photography, that if I was unable to make my own prints, it hardly worth spending the time to shoot. There was a point in my photographic life when this actually happened to me (Click here to read full story ). I think, in my case, this is because I started print making at an early age, at about the same time I started shooting.

I wonder if there are a lot of photographers who feel as I do on that subject. What's your spin on the whole, “shoot, and print" philosophy?

  14. Robyn, if I didn't know better I would think you were talking about me. Several years ago I started trying to be a portrate photographer without much luck. I have tried advertising, passing out cards, putting up flyers, and offering freebies, all with little success. Lately I have been trying to follow some advice my wife has been trying to give me from the begenning.

She said that since people are always telling me what great photos I take when they see my work mounted and framed on our walls, that I should just try to sell the pictures I take of flowers, and dogs, and clouds, and whatever. I have made a few sales, and am now trying to present some of my stuff on line.

In December of 07 I opened a Cafepress shop featuring a few designs with some of my photos on t-shirts, and mugs. Not many photos featured yet but I will be offering posters and note cards soon. I have made a few sales without any effort except opening the shop. Now I am studying different ways to market the shop on line, and just last night I opened a gallery on Smugmug, a site for showing and selling images.

I have not given up on portrates, but something else has to be done if I am to keep financing this expensive hobby.

  15. Jim:

I have cleaned contacts, tryed different lenses, and reformated cards. I have even cleaned battery contacts. I kind of suspect a battery problem, because it seems that I get the errors very bad, after charging, but if I sit and fire the camera, with all the turning it on and off to reset it after the errors, over and over, after a while the errors start to subside. At this point the battery meter starts showing low charge.

I have ordered another battery, and will try that before calling Canon, and returning the camara for repair.

I have been using Canons for decades, with no problem. If I find that this error 99 problem is a rare thing I will stick with Canon, because up to now they have served me well.
