  1. I realize that I need to learn how to use a photo editing software

product, but I'm not clear which would be best to learn.

I have Canon's Digital Photo Professional 2.0 (updated from 1.6) and

was wondering how it compares with Adobe Elements 4.0.

I have Adobe photoshop album Starter 3.0 and I find the Canon

product more intuitive and easier to use, but I understand that

Elements 4.0 is a much better product with richer features.

At this time I don't want to spend the time ot money in the full

Photoshop product. I need to learn the language of the features of

photo editing before getting Photoshop. Learn to crawl before trying

    to run.

    TIA

  2. In a previous question the 70-200mm f2.8/L IS was suggested with a

    1.4 extender in place of a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6/L IS.

I admitt that I had not thought of this as an alternative because I

understood that when you add an extender you also raise the minimum

f stop for the lens, and therefore I thought that the 100-400mm

would be a "faster" lens than a 70-200mm f2.8 with an extender. I

also presumed that the 70-200mm would not be as sharp with the

    extender as the 100-400mm.

I had a 70-200 f4/L (recently sold on eBay) and found that most of

my shots were at the long end of the lens, and I kept wanting

greater reach, so I would guess that I would also be at the long end

of the lens with an extender and therefore 100-400mm seemed like a

better alternative based on the above assumptions.

The other, more expensive alternative I thought of was buy trhe f2.8

lens and a 300mm f4/L. This would add significant cost plus much

    more bulk to my kit.

Are my assumptions about an extender valid when evaluating which

lens will best fit my needs?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. I have been looking at two different two lens combinations: A) 24-

    70mm f2.8L plus 70-200 f2.8L OR B)24-105 f4/L IS plus 100-400mm f4.5-

5.6L IS. These two lens combos are priced about the same (the 2.8 is

    about $300 more).

My primary use will be landscape / travel /zoo photos. I'm using a

    20D.

The pros for the A group is the IS feature because I will probably

only have a monopod available sometimes. This group also has a

broader range and thus will allow more flexibility in composing my

    shots.

The B group are very appealing because of they are sharper and able

    to shoot in low light.

    What are your thoughts?

  5. I had a similar need and I purchased a Manfrotto 680B w/484 head. I 484 head was very inexpensive (approx. $37) so I really didn't expect much, but it does the job. It is small and when traveling I take it off the 680 and carry it in my camera case. The 680/484 worked well with my 20D with a 70-200mm f4/L attached.

So for less than $100 I have a relatively compact camera support/ walking stick.

When tring to get the best composition I sometimes find that I need to hike over rocky, rough terraine, and the Monopod acts a excellent support to help be balance myself and camera kit on those slippery slopes. LOL

  6. I was thinking about getting a Powershot S80 as a motorcycle travel

camera. Small enough to be taken in I my shirt pocket, and yet able

    to take reasonably good photos.

I noticed that my 20d with 8.2 megapixels and a crop factor of 1.6

equates with the FF 5D at 12.8 mega pixels, so I was wondering about

    the S80 which has a crop factor of 4.83 (5.8mm = 28mm in ff), so I

was wondering if the S80 with 8 megapixals has the equivalent of

    38.64 megapixals in a FF eqivalent! (8 megapixals x 4.83 crop

    factor).

I realize that the 8 megapixals on the s80 are so small that the

resolution is not a par with my 20D.

It appears that the camera industry needs a new way of measuring,

because the 35mm equivalent really isn't eqivalent, but it is

confusing as it is currently used. IMHO

  7. I bought the 2gb CF card when I got my camera. Works great, no issues. Seems like the files are written to the CF very quickly. Maybe 2-300 pictures testing the lens I got and finding out how the camera works. I'm very pleased with my decision to sell the Nikon stuff and switch to Canon.

I've been using the USB connection to download files to my computer and love how fast the process is.

I just got the camera and CF and Lexar had a $30 rebate when I got mine, seemed like a good deal.

  8. I went to the beach yesterday to take shots of the surf, and

seagulls in flight. My lens should probably be cleaned after

    exposure to the salt air.

I was about to use the lens cleaner that I got for my eye glesses at

Lens Crafters but was wondering if I needed to use or do anything

special to avoid damaging the Canon lens and their coatings while

    cleaning them.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  9. I'm new to Canon and I haven't seen anything that explains why Canon

uses white for their "L" telephoto lens. Please tell me why and

what's the history behind using white for this segment of their lens

    line. TIA

I should receive my first L Telephoto on Friday (70-200mm 4L), and

if I had my choice, I probably would have ordered all black. The

camera and gear are expensive, and when I shooting I'm not aware of

who, or what is happening around me, so no need to draw any extra

attention to me and my gear.

Anyone ever have a close enounter with evil minded individuals?

  10. I recently acquired a 20D. The camera is wonderful and I'm really

    enjoying using it, EXCEPT...

am I the only one who finds the On/Off switch ackward to use? I read

several reviews, and don't recall anyone else mentioning the switch.

It just feels arkward to get to and the two position on switch, well

I've seen a lot better location and designs, and since the rest of

the camera works so well, I find this very annoying. Anyone else

agree or am I being silly?

  11. If you look on Ebay you will see my Nikon D100 + lens, etc. up for sale. I compared Nikon vs Canon and decided to switch.

I use Smugbug to store and share photos on the internet, so I went to their site, looked under Photography, and noticed that the pictures that appealed to me usually were taken by 20d or Rebel XT cameras. The Nikon's did not appear as sharp and the colors were soft IMHO. I realize that this has a lot to do with the person behind the lens but still I was surprised that I was able to spot Canon photos and was impressed with their color and sharpness, enough to sell all my Nikon stuff and buy Canon.<div>00ElXA-27362084.jpg.9da5449754e430420805a6b46d5f8330.jpg</div>

  12. Well I started buying a 20D w 17-85mm lens. Then I saw the rebate on

the iP6600D printer would increase my toal rebate by $150 vs a cost

of $181 (Focus) - net incremental cost $31, so I clicked my mouse a

few more times and the printer arrived. Took a few shows with the

    20D and I really like it SO today I ordered a 70-200 4L, which

increased my rebate my $200 against a cost of $579 -net incrental

    cost of $379, click, click.

Now all I have to do is pay for all the stuff I bought with the

rebates. Don't you just love a sale and credit cards and the

    internet?

Here is Jack The Cat through the lens of the 20D<div>00ElUS-27360084.JPG.53246a491f8ac902eb88c2b67e362e1d.JPG</div>

  13. I did check previous discussions but they were all several years ago.

    I have a 20D w17-85mm +10-22mm. I do a lot of my travel by BMW

motorcycle so space is at a premium, and my equipment is relatively

    light.

I currently have a Gitzo 126/1276 head used while traveling on the

bike and a Gitzo 1226/ kirk BH 3 head.

In practice I generally do not take my tripod with me because it

takes too much time / effort to load / unload - setup / tear down

when I'm traveling since I'm not sure if I'll need or want it based

on what is down the trail or around the bend.

Recently while visiting my local camera shop I noticed a Manfrotto

676B monopod which looked small yet sturdy, and much easier (l/3 the

number of legs to extend / compress).

What would you do, suggest? Carry the Gitzo or go for the new toy?

    TIA

    Dave

  14. I'm confused by the suggestions offered and would appreciate your assistance.

I thought that the 17-85mm ef-s is would have been suggested because it was designed for the 20D, is light and the camera body's shutter speed can compensate for the the slower f stop on the lens.

I also would expect that the small light lens and body combination would facilitate in capturing the action of a wedding. Most wedding pictures are not blown up very large so I would guess that the higher shutter speeds would not be descernable.

If you were taking landscapes where there is little action, often poor lighting, and a good shot might be made into a large poster you want a big lens mounted on a tripod that can utilize whatever natural light is available.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks

    Dave Mishalof

  15. I called Canon today about the rebates. I just ordered a 20D and wanted to better understand the buy two items and double the rebates, buy three...

Apparently if I buy a printer my rebate increses by us$150. Since the cost of the printer is only $181, my net incremental cost for the printer is only $31. Seems like a deal I can't walk away from...the more you spend the more you save...Hummm?

It works the same way with the XT except that rebate is $75 so your incremental increase would threrfore be $125 ($75(2x rebel rebate) + $50 (2x the printer rebate))
