  1. I recently switched from PC's to Apple. One of the fun parts about being a MAC

user is following all of the rumors. There are numerous web sites devoted to

insider info and rumors. Much of the rumors are started based on Apple's

    applications for new patents.

This got me to thinking about Canon's new products. There is much discussion on

this forum about what Canon may do to mordernize their current EOS products.

Much of what is seculated appears to be wishful thinking rather than on any

substance. I presume that Japan has a patent office and or something similar.

The new Canon EOS cameras are brimming with new technology and I presume that

Canon has taken the required steps to legally safeguard their new developments.

Is anyone posting Canon "rumors" based on patents and copyright activity? Even

if the technology isn't ground breaking the manufacturing techniques used to

bring the developments to market must be.

Just trying to figure if the 5D Mark II will have a new 15.4 MP with the200,000

+ long life shutter, Digic III, and improved exposure and AF. I figure the

patent office will be the place to find the changes in the 1Ds Mark III because

I don't have a clue about what the Canon engineers dream about... LOL

  2. I was reading the 1D Mark III white paper about how they improved the autofocus

system by redesigning the 45 AF points. I have several questions that I hope

are not too obvious or simple to the more experienced amoung us.

As I read the description, I see where the Verticle sensor parts are designed

for f2.8 and the Horizontal are f5.6 and the Center is f4.0. This got me to

thinking about my glass. All my "L" Zooms are fixed at either f2.8 or f4.0 so

that's fine but some of the fixed lens are rated much faster- f1.4 or faster.

If the AF sensors are designed to read f2.8 how do they focus the really fast

    glass at f1.2?

The next question I had is based on metering. When I set "Evaluative " metering

how does the camera know how much light is outside the AF sensor areas? If

this is calculated based on the 9, 26. 45 af sensors then do the extra sensors

make a big difference. I would presume that each sensor is "assigned" a group

of pixels to adjust. The smaller the number of pixels each sensor controls the

better, except when your shooting f2.8 or faster because then there are very

few sensors for that speed and they are all clustered in the center.

Seems like no matter how good my eqipment gets, I still want just a little

    better LOL

    TIA

    Dave

  3. I'm going to shoot my first girls indoor HS basketball game this evening, and I

wanted to verify the camera settings I plan to use. My eqippment will be a

Canon 30D with 70-200mm L f2.8 IS lens on a monopod. The settings I'm planning

on using are: iso 1000,Center Weighted metering, servo.I'm thinking about using

Shutter Priority and setting it to 1/160 sec. to stop the action. The game is

being played in the local YMCA (I have never been there before.)

Should 1/160 be fast enough to stop action and will iso 1000 allow me to shoot

at f2.8? I know that some just set the camera to iso 3200 but then the pictures

are noisey. The only lens that I have that is faster than f2.8 is my 50mm f1.8

but I don't believe that will have the reach that I'll need in the gym.

    Any last minute suggestions? TIA

    Dave

  4. I have a 30D and recently have begun shooting RAW. This has made a significant

    improvement in my results.

I have a MS Media Center desktop and an Apple MacBook laptop. I have been

looking for a RAW conversion program that I can use on both platforms.

Bibble Pro apparently allows loading the software on both platforms as long as

the software is used by only one user.

I hve been reading several photo articles that have done conparisons of RAW

conversion software and I was surprised to see the difference in results

between the different programs. This surprised me because I originally thought

that if you took a RAW file as originally shot, all software conversions would

result in the same image before making post production modifications. Appently

there are differences in the RAW conversions as well.

My question is without spending $500++, what is the most realistic RAW

conversion program which has good post production tools and an intuitive work

flow? If the program works on both MS and Mac platform that is an added.

    TIA

PS If this is the wron forum for this question I;m sorry, but I'm interested

in what specificly works best with my Canon 30D images.

  5. I pre-registered, the three lens purchases, and sent my paperwork in on June 30, 2006. No e-mail acknowledgement, no acknowledgement on the rebate status web page...Nothing. When I contact Canon they say it can take 8 weeks and I just have to wait 8 weeks for the rebate center to admitt that they lost my paperwork. I know that they lost my paperwork because I have a signed receipt from the US Post Office proving that they received it, but Canon will do nothing to assist me. This sucks!
  6. I'm using a Lowepro s&f specialist 80AW (I believe that this was replaced with the 75AW). My 30D with 70-200mm f2.8L IS fits in the center allowing me to carry an extender, other lens, flash, etc. on either side of the center partions. Extra battery, filters, etc. fit in the front pocket.

This bag comes with a belt, but I prefer to just use the neck /shoulder strap, because I can more easily reposition the bag while walking around, and it take up a lot less room when I take the bag off. The bag also hangs more easily from my tripod without the belt attached.

Lowepro bags have a thoughtful design and are well made. Many of the sutle features become more evident and helpful as you use the bag with your equipment.

    Happy shooting!

  7. Thank you very much. Your explaination makes a lot of sense. I've tried raw but had problems up loading the files to Smugmug (where I post most of my work) even after converting the raw files to jpeg after working on them. I have a lot more experience now and probably should try using raw files again.

Again thanks for the excellent comments.

  8. I have a Canon 30D and I shot in large jpeg. If the sensor has "only" 8.2 mp

how come my files are over 10mp? Here is the shooting information from Canon

The scene is of the court yard of Mission San Juan Capistrano. I used a 24-

    105MM f4L IS lens.

    Thanks in advance

  9. I believe that historicly, Canon has run a rebate program twice each year.

What I don't understand is why it appears to be managed so poorly, at least my

participation has not provided me with a positive feeling towards Canon.

In order to check status a customer is required to find and click on 4

different links to find the sign on page. Is Canon trying to hide this feature?

I went to canon's web page and registered my purchases and received a tracking

    ID.

Then I sent my package (purchased three L series lens) via USPS with a receipt

request. The receipt was signed on 7/8/06 yet Canon's status page does not

reflect receipt. Since the pre-registration process results in a bar code id

it appear that all they have to do is scan the bar code to update their

    status.

The internet has spoiled us and made us expect instant real time respose to

most things and Canon generally advertises that they are a modern company with

advanced technology, so why is their customer service/ rebate program back in

the dark ages (they claim a 60 day response time)?

What purpose does it serve Canon to run rebate programs (on most of their

products) that is so arkward and slow that it leaves their customers with the

feeling that Canon is not trying to live up to their end of the purchase

    agreement?

Canon's rebate programs is really bad, especially since it is a regular

feature offered on most of their products. The problem is the rebates provide

    a significant price discount.

Auto Mfg. allow their dealers to provide their rebates at the point of sale

and so should Canon. Canon should not make their customers jump through so

many hoops to obtain their price discount. Let the dealers administer the

discount and give the customer a positive feeling towars Canon. This might

    also save Canon money adminsitratively.

  10. Has anyone purchased a Nova Remote Switch on Ebay rather that buying the Canon

    RS-80N3 ?

The Nova switch looks like Nova makes the Canon RS-80N3 and this is their

    private lable verion.

The Canon switch is almost twice the price, and I just can't understand how

the Canon RS-80N3 is a better electrical switch. Is it?

    Thanks for your assistance

  11. Many states have BOTH a sales Tax and a Use tax. The Sales tax is collected on

all sales within a state. There is often a Use tax due on all items purchased

outside the sate but USED within the state, generally both sales and use tax

    are the same rate.

The Franchsise Tax Board, California Tax collector, is preparing to

aggressively go after the unreported USE tax due the State. They have a

program where you might only be responsible for the last three years rather

than the last ten years of unreported and unpaid USE tax. See your tax

    preparer for details.

Curious how many on this forum are reporting and paying the USE tax due on

camera equipment purchases from outside of their state of residence? I

believe Customs takes care of purchases made outside of the country of your

    residence.

No, I'm not a tax collector. I just received a letter from Franchise Tax Board

about their activies to collect the Use Tax. Camera Equipment can be large

dollar purchases especially the way it's done on this forum, so I thought it

would be interesting to see how many if any were reporting the Use tax.

  12. On a 30D is a 24-105 plus a 17-40mm too much redundancy? I have the

opportunity to get a 17-40mm at a really good price but I wonder if I will

really use it much since I already have the 24-105mm.

I realize that the extra 7mm is significant, yet I haven't really noticed that

I needed wider as much as I wanted longer (telephoto). Seems that my pictures

are more interesting if I get closer to the subject rather than including more

    in each picture.

The "deal" on the 17-40mm is very tempting if I really use the lens.

If you have a 17-40mm do you generally shoot at 17mm or in the 22-40mm range?

What do you capture with the extra wide portion of this lens?

    TIA

  13. The Manfrotto 3021 bpro is a very nice tripod and reasonably priced. I recently purchased one BUT I have replaced it with a Benro CF M228n6. The 3021 at just over 5 pounds didn't seem very heavy in the camera shop and I'm a big strong guy so I figured what difference can a few pounds make?

Well if you intend to take your camera and tripod to the zoo or on nature hikes, like I do, then the 3021 got kind of heavey at the end of a long day out in the sun.

The CF Benro is two pounds lighter, and that does make a noticable difference out in the field. I'm very happy that I have the lighter tripod.

The 3021 is very well made and I wish I had a reason to keep it. I need to put it on ebay.

  14. Response to Canon 5D + grip + 24-105: wich tripod and head?(Category:Tripods/Camera Support)

I don't have the grip, but I recently got a Benro M228n6 (Chineese copy of Gitzo G1228)and a Kirk BH-3 with QR plates. I'm very pleased with the way everything works together. The tripod + Kirk ball head are light but very stable and they support the camera and lens at the correct height without using the the center column (I'm 6' tall). I also use this with the much heavier 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens, and it is rock solid.

I found my Benro on Ebay at about half the cost of Gitzo. It appears very well made. I replaced my other Gitzo Tripod because I just wanted something new and I justified it by saying I needed a stonger tripod. LOL

Personally I feel the ball head is more important than the tripod. You can have the strongest / best tripod, but if the head doesn't allow you to get the camera in focus in time to get the shot it really doesn't matter how good the tripod you are using is. IMHO I really like Kirk , reasonably priced and very well made. The RRS is also very nice but more pricey.

    Good luck!

  15. I have a Kirk BH-3 ball head, which has a cut out on the side so that I can

turn the ball head with camera on it's side. Why would I want to use an "L"

bracket instead of flipping the ball head on it's side within the cut out?

Is the answer that the camera/ lens are more stable/secure if on top of the

Ball head directly above the tripod rather than on the side?

It just seems so much faster to tip the camera on it's side rather than take

the camera off the tripod and remount it on the other leg of the "L" bracket.

My camera seems very stable and secure while turned on it's side with the ball

locked in the side cut out.

    Am I missing something important?

Currently my biggest lens is a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L, as stated above it is

mounted to a Kirk BH-3 Ball Head attached to a Benro M228n6 tripod.

    TIA

    Dave

  16. It's a little late to ask about regets after purchasing the lens. LOL

I got mine with the 1.4 TC and the combo is awesome. Once you put the lens on the camera it's hard to take it off. The 70-200mm f2.8 IS is really spectacular when used on a tripod. I know it has IS and that is nice, but a tripod helps to bring out the amazing detail that this lens is capable of delivering.

I have also been using it for close flower captures.

It is a very expensive lens but once you start to review your pictures you will probably be like me and say that it is well worth it.

    Enjoy!

  17. I have been using my 70-200mm f2.8 is with a 1.4x TC to take close

    ups of flowers.

My understanding of the the advantage to shooting with a macro such

as a 100mm is that I could get closer to the subject to fill the

    frame. Is that correct?

I understood that a macro lens needs to be very close to a subject

to focus, and sometimes that isn't possible without scaring the

subject or possible to get very close.

So I guess my question is when and how is a marcro better than using

a lens such as my 70-200mm?

    TIA

  18. I just went through the same decision process and went with the Rebel XT. I have bought only "L" lens to use with it and the pictures are amazing! I have a 24-105mm f4L IS & 70-200mm f2.8 L IS, 1.4X Tc and a 50mm f1.8. I have very large hands but I generally use a Manfrotto 680B monopod with the 70-200mm because it feels heavey after about 75 shots LOL. I have very large hands and I don't find the size of the Rebel XT too small. Actually I like the small size and weight. If only using the camera and lens I will carry most of the weight with my left hand which is under the lens while the right hand is used for stabilization and shutter control. The XT feels comfortable to me.

IMHO the Rebel XT produces great pictures at an amazing price. At less than $600 (after rebate) the choice was a no brainer to me. Good luck.

  19. Hi

I also recently purchased a Rebel XT and I bought the 24-105mm f4L IS; then the 50mm f1.8; 70-200mm f2.8L IS. Each lens has been awesome. My lens' cost me many times more than the camera body, but I figured that the sensor in the Rebel delivers almost the same quality pics as the 20D or 30D without all the features. I'm real happy with spending my money on the glass.

I got my lens at Beach Camera who has been totally reliable with excellent prices. Alaska is very BIG so I hope you have 3-4 weeks min. for your vacation. Have a great time!
