  1. <p>I would suggest the Canon Rebel XTi. Same size sensor plus 1080P video and the IQ is comparable. I just don't feel the extra features on the 50D are worth the extra price. I would suggest getting the XTi and accumulating "L" glass. The body may change but quality glass you just keep using long after you have "upgraded " the body. <br>

All of the current model Canon bodies can benefit from the best glass, so that is where I would, and have prioritized my camera equipment purchases. </p>

  2. <p>Compared to many who are regulars on this forum I'm just a novice, but I do enjoy practicing my photogrphy hobby whenever I can. In my eyes I see a steady improvement in my photos. <br>

As I read this thread most seemed to compare the difference in sensor size between the 5DII and 7D as the primary reason why they felt one body was "better" than the other for a particular purpose. Sure the FF sensor naturally captures a wider area than the APS-C sensor.<br>

In my limited experience I realized that I need an assortment of lens to fit the type of photo I want to capture. Sure a FF sensor allows me to capture a wider angle field of view than the same lens on an SPS-C sensor camera, BUT I have found the metering to be the real challenge in those shots. Landscapes generally include lots of earth tone colors which don't usually have lots of contrast.<br>

The 7D appears to have on paper a superior AF/ metering system to the FF 5DII. I would guess that the superior metering system may enable the 7D to deliver more detail than the 5DII. The samples on the limited reviews that are available show some amazing landscape shots from the 7D, and I attribute that the the metering system and the sensors ability to control noise at reasonable ISO levels. I say reasonable ISO levels because in low light there is much less detail to capture.<br>

Some have claimed that FF is better than APS-C for portraits. Again, my limited experience has shown that I get better, shots if I'm able to give the subject more space. The subjects appear more relaxed the farther away I stand with my camera, but that may just be me. LOL It isn't obvious to me that either sensor is "better" than the other when shooting people. Just grab the right lens based on the circumstances.<br>

A general comment about landscapes, I have found the most interesting shots are the ones that do not try to include everything along the horizon but select out a specific subject. Yes, a wide angle is required to capture one mountain or tree, but sometimes the APS-C allows me to do this without hiking as far as I might have to with a FF sensor.<br>

If you have the right lens and are comfortable using your camera body I believe that either sensor can be used to get THE shot. It is the photographer that needs to use the body and lens and compose the shot. That is the art.<br>

Personally for me, the current AF/ metering on the 7D would make that my camera body of choice.</p>

  3. <p>Generally the price of new cameras comes down the longer it has been out, but not the 5D MkII. Why?<br>

Surely there can't be a supply problem unless Canon is regulating supply to just meet demand. In many cases dealers are getting more than MSRP? <br>

There can't be anything special in the mfg process that would cause a limited supply and one would expect Canon like most manufacturers need the sales revenue.<br>

    What's going on?<br>

    Thanks</p>

  4. Saw this on Engadget sit this am:

Is it Photokina time, or what? Joining the host of other camera manufacturers with sparkly fresh announcements this

week is none other than Leica, which just announced a trio of new cams a few days back. This introduction,

however, stands alone, and Leica's making some pretty remarkably bold statements about its new S-system. The

first device to take advantage is the 37-frickin'-megapixel S2, which sits between Canon's EOS 5D and EOS 1Ds

MkIII in terms of body size. The company designed the camera to provide "the quality of medium format and the

handling and flexibility of 35mm," and the outfit also has nine S-system lenses on tap. As for expectations? Leica

says it'll perform "twice as fast as Hasselblad H-series cameras," and if that wasn't straight-up enough, the firm's

David Bell proclaimed that "[Leica] thinks it has the best professional camera system in the world with this."

  5. Hope this isn't a really silly question: Generally I download my raw photos via Lightroom on my laptop, which has a

1600x900 resolution,1,440,000 MP. Sometimes I view those photos on my 1080P HDTV, 2,072,600 MP.

My current camera's raw images are 8-12 MP, so what happens, and how do I see those 6-10mp's that my screens

do not have the ability to reproduce? If I were to purchase a 5DII woulkd I have the ability to "SEE" any greater detail/

resolution than I can currently see with my current camera without creating a Large Print?

I have looked at some of the sample photos from the 5DII and they look awesome on my laptop. I just don't

understand how the added detail from the FF 21.1 MP 5DII can be seen on my 1.4 MP screen. Thanks in advance.

  6. I have a 9G, and took my first video clip at a sporting event, boy was I surprised how much I liked it. The quality was just ok but the addition of sound really adds an other dimension to the experience. The combination of the still photos and a few select videos is awesome. I now enjoy supplementing my still photos with the sound and motion of a few select videos.

I will be getting a 5DmkII. The FF IQ and other improvements, plus the "small size and weight" make this the ideal travel camera.

I am so glad I waited and didn't get an old 5D. The price differenece between the Old 5D and the New 5D mkII is insignificant vs the improved features. There is a regular self proclaimed sage on this forum who was pushing the combination of the 40D and old 5D. I knew Canon could do a lot better because of what Nikon was selling. That Forum sage was so wrong, and I'm so happy i didn't follow his advise.

  7. Went to the teaser this evening and boy was I surprised. The camera is now clearly a Nikon D700. Guess Canon is using the teaser to conceed to Nikon.LOL

This is such a dumb immature marketing game. Either release a new body, but stop with the games. Just tell us the date when Canon will announce the new body that will be available for distribution two months latter.

This is all about a build up to an announcement, and Canon usually does not have product available to sell when they make an announcement so why all the drama? Is this Canon's way of saying that the New body will NOT be abvailable for the holidays and they want everyone to wait till January to buy their holiday gifts?

  8. Nice pictures, BUT... what I would really like to see is the exact same picture, taken with the exact same lens, compared to the 40D and XSI.

I realize that all of these bodies can not take all the photos at the same iso, due to specification limitations, but lets see how they do at their maximum iso with the same light and lens. Lets see the advantage of shooting at 6400 iso?

I'm tired of "evaluations" that include subjective comparisons. Why not show us what the camera body can do under the identical conditions so that we can make objective decisions on if the extra money is worth the difference in performance.

I do appreciate DPR's excellent reviews, I just would appreciate a comparison of real world photos, not test patterens, or studio props.

    Thank you

  9. I also have a Rebel XSI. The XSI is capable of delivering excellent image quality. My walk around lens is the 24-105mm F4 IS "L" lens. In fact I only use "L" lens except for the 50mm f1.4. The other lens that I use with my XSI are:

    17-40 f4 "L"; 70-200mm f2.8 IS "L"; 300mm f4 IS "L".

The XSI deserves good glass because it can deliver excellent image quality. Buy the best glass you can afford. The bodies come and go but the glass lasts IMHO

  10. Iメm an accountant not an engineer, But

Snipe: taken from the above referenced article:

    >"However, it is argued that the visual acuity of the human eye puts a limit to the relevant resolving power of a photographic system. The final output is the print, and the naked eye can see detail until a point. This limit determines how much detail the lens and sensor or film must resolve.ヤ

Several years ago I was an active HiFi hobbyist. I would spend a great deal of time reviewing and comparing the differences in the specifications of competing equipment and using that information to base my buying decisions.

Then one day I realized that the differences in the specifications were not really important unless I could perceive those differences with any of my 5 senses..

An engineer in a lab using very sophisticated equipment might be able to measure differences in competing equipment, but unless those differences could be sensed and appreciated in real world use there was no benefit to spending the extra bucks for engineering differences.

I believe the point of the article is that the current level of technology is approaching or surpassed our abilities to see differences in equipment. I know that I donメt blow up my photos into posters, and generally they are viewed on computer monitors or HDTV at relatively low resolution. There is a real benefit to being able to crop a photo and having enough pixels left after the crop so that the crop is sharp, with high resolution and good contrast. The degree of cropping determines the resolution required from the sensor.

Therefore, give me more and larger pixels with better glass!

  11. Personally I don't want EF-S lens. The body may come and go but I will keep good glass...ie "L". If you want to get a FF body in the future, that decision will be more difficult if you also have EF-S glass. The other advantage is an aps-c body does not see any softness or distortion in the lens at the edges. LOL

I have, and would recomment the 24-105mm f4 IS plus the 17-40 f4

These are the two lens I use the most. I would also get a 50mm as a low light lens. I have the f1.4 but if the above two lens strech your budget, then I would get the f1.8 at the same cost as a good lens filter.

    Happy shooting!

I have also received a XSi this week which I am trying out. My point of reference is 40D.

The other thing is that at ISO 400 the noise in pictures is visible at 100%. Nothing major and easily correctable but it is there in all pictures. I would say that I expect similar level of noise from 40D at ISO640 or 800.

I know that reviewers are raving about XSi performance and IQ as comparable to 40D, but so far this does not appear to be true

    >>>I don't have a 40D, 5D or 1DS to compare to but if you look at the photos in my attached gallery, several of my photos of Jack the Cat are at ISO 400 and they are sharp, and I sure don't see any noise.in the attached photos. Do you?

The bottom line for me is if I don't "See" the noise, then therefore it doesn't exist.! LOL

If I said the attached photos came from a 40D or 5D could you tell by looking at the photos that they really came from a XSI?

I hope you enjoy your 40D as much as I'm enjoying my XSI.

  13. My Canon XSI body arrived today and I snaped a few photos in the house. I

recently sold my two year old 30D on eBay to upgrade to the XSI. My initial

impression is that the AF is faster than the 30D and I like the light feel and

handling of the body. The right hand grip and shutter relase redesign are a big

improvement from previous Rebels that I tried. The more expensive 40D has more

features but I don't believe that I need or would use the extra performance, so I

decided to save a few hundred dollars and approx 10 oz. in weight (I'm not as

young or as fit as I once was).

I just set the iso and aperture and took a few shots. I know that both the camera

and I can do better once we get to know each other better,

    Your comments are appreciated.

  14. I generally use a Bogen 680B monopod. It gives me much better control and my shots are sharper. It also make panning easy. The Monopod also is a nice walking stick and helps me balance myself when I need to get into arkward spots for the angle and shot I want. The 70-200 f2.8 is is an awesome lens! Have fun!

  15. The most important question: Will the new 10mp XS have less noise at ISO 1600 than the 10mp 40D?

I doubt it, I understand it shares the sensor of the 400D, so noise levels will be comparable to that camera.

    >>>What is the difference between the 10mp sensor on the 1.6x 400D and the 40D? I understand that Canon does not provide the same feature set in the two cameras, so that they justify the price difference, but what could be different between the two 10mp sensors that are the same size? I thought that the differences in the bodies was all about what happens AFTER the image was recorded on the sensor.
