  1. yeeeeeeeeeah!!!!!! finally. dont laugh now. but it was the batterys. my dad said that before sending it over to me here in italy he bought brand new (28$!!!!!!) batterys. but little did i know that in just a few days/weeks, without using the camera the batterys will run out. the red light, lit up to show that the batters work, but does not necessarly mean that there is enough power to open and close the shutter (or even for a prism metering!!). so im shocked, but relieved. ill post up my first MF photos as soon as i have them printed......THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. i think friedmann you gave me all the facts i needed. the guy on the auction site sold a broken camera. at least not all 1200 $ went to waist. still got three lenses the back plus polaroid etc. il see if i can get the money back to get a new one. ill first take it into a shop though. thanks sooooooo much!!

  3. thanks all.....friedemann, i did all you said, biut it wouldnt shoot. two thoughts. one: after i did all that it wouldnt shoot, but i tried putting the lever to "s" and while i was turning the switch it shot. not when i pressed the release button though.

the other thing is the lens. the two medal points on the curve. the medal points are BETWEEN the red lines and the green dots. so yeah, they are next to the green dots but not directly under. i can push them under but the ymove back right away.

im gonna try taking it in to a repair shop to see what they say. its not possible that it soooo dificult.

    thanks again

  4. hey all,

this is a continuation to my previous thread: http://www.photo.net/medium-format-photography-forum/00QQsC

Its still not working. i brought it to a photographer friend and somehow we got it to shoot a couple of times! she said

that it had to have the multiexposure set to S in order to shoot. infact it worked a couple of times. theni took off

thinking id be able to to do it, buit i could get it to shoot at ALL. it shoots when i crank the crank rather than when i

push the exposure button. i tried all the possible combinations and havnt been able to do it. i did try doing exactly

what i did with the photographer....nothing.

this is weird, any ideas? anyone who actually uses a sq-ai now?

    thanks again

  5. another things, i just saw the lens both attached and detached. when i open and close the f stops the shutter doesnt open and close like my 35mm camera lenses..

I DO have a speed grip but that ON button, is just a lock. its not a on or off button.

i dont even hear the mirrorgo up and down. i push the button and nothing happens......

  6. hello,

i just bought a bronica sq-ai off the auction site. it has the prism, which i believe has a meter cause there is a on and

off switch and a auto-manual switch. i need help. this thing wont take any shots. the batterys are new. the red light

turns on. after i bought it my dad took this into a shop and they said it was working fine. then i recieved it and i cant

get it to shoot. so i ve loaded the film properly, connected the back. turned on the on button. cranked the.....crank

and tried shooting, but nothing happens........am i doing something wrong?load film, turn on..take shot....no??

please help.......and why cant i see any expsure readings?? all that lights up is the red battery light.

ive downloaded the manual but it wont explain to me anything.

    thanks!

  7. hey all,

im looking for a light meter. these are the ones most advised to get, but cant seem to understand the differences. do

any of them have spot metering? they seem to go more or less for the same price. which one would be best?

im doing medium format black and white with tri-x 400.

    thanks!!

  8. hey all

i just recieved my bronica sq-ai and i dont think the prism has a meter. (it has an on and off switch, plus a auto-

manual switch on the prism.........does it have a light meter??) anyway, i think ill be getting a handheld meter and i

know nothing about them. im on budget so i need something simple but good and accurate. i dont need all the

accesories. i guess a simple spot and the matrix type, would work. i dont know. some ideas.....? all i know is i need

it accurate and simple and LOW cost.

    thanks everyone!!

  9. hey everone,

i know to say "everytime", is an impossible goal, but nonetheless im trying to figure out the problem so i know when

it will be possible to take these shots.

im talking about TONES. i shoot black and white with a 35mm nikon system. I am now going to start with medium

format, and film, developing, printing, and general costs are higher. so id like to be better prepared than "shoot and

    see".

at first i was using any film, then understood i had to find the right one. ive been very happy with tri-x 400. (talking

tones here). but im not getting the results all the time. what i mean is that ill take a shot im "sure" will produce a

certain tone (because of a minimum of experience and experimentation). then i develope and i get washed blacks

and grays and its just muddy. I get good result much more than i used to, but im trying to figure out why i dont get it

more often. i think its exposure. i dont develope my film yet (i will in the next few weeks). im aware you can slightly

change tones when developing with chemicals, but i think my problem is understanding exposure. i will soon read

    more about the zone system.

here is a example to show what im looking for.

the kids behind the bars have the tones that im looking for. Faces with detail but soft rich tones. Below the kids

where the cement is, is the tone i usualy get.

so for example, in this photo it would be impossible to get the cement with the same tones as the kids? Do i need to

underexpose my photos? (when doing this i find i get many parts of the photo cloudy and clearly "underexposed")

i guess im looking for very rich tones in the whole photo. does this mean that to get these results i have to shoot in

    lower light situations?

i know i didnt write this down very well, but i hope i give the idea.

thanks for any and all input

  10. hello,

i was going to buy some liquid emulsion from a seller on ebay and have it be sent

here to italy. would it be effected by the x-rays? OR is there any place to order

from europe at the same price (29 usd$ per 8 oz)?

    thanks

    james

  11. hey everyone, im looking at buying a MF camera and a bronica sqai with a 40,80,

and 150mm lens, with a 120 back and a polaroid back with speedgrip went for

1150us dollars. great condition and clean lenses. is it worth it? is that the price ill

be looking at for that kind of outfit? i need the 40mm too.

    thanks for input!!
