  1. Dave, I have the 300/f4 AF-S and it is a great lens. I have used it extensively with the TC-14EII for shooting surf with very good results. The main gripe about the lens that I have seen is the tripod collar which apparently is weak and can vibrate. I rarely use slower shutter speeds with telephotos so I don't know from personal experience with this lens. Kirk photo makes a replacement tripod collar for the lens that is much sturdier if that is a concern.
  2. For shooting surf from the shore the bigger the lens the better. After that it comes down to your budget. I got away with using a Nikon 300mm f/4 with a 1.4 teleconverter with good results for quite a while (many of the wave and surfing shots on my photo.net page were taken with this setup). From the reviews I have read I am not sure the auto-focus on the 80-400 is great for sports but I have no personal experience with it. This year I got a 200-400 VR f/4 which works great, even with the 1.4 TC but that is quite the pricey lens.
  3. I just posted 2 photos for critique and the both instantly had 7 or 8 ratings, 6

or 7 from new members. I have noticed this more and more recently. Is there an

increasing amount of bot action going on?

  4. Amy,

I was in Alaska last September and there were still salmon running up the Kenai. Mostly silvers with lots of dying reds around. Are you talking about shooting bears catching salmon at Brooks Falls? If so that is a fly-in trip. One thing you might not want to miss are the fall colors up around Denali Park. Check out my page for some Alaska photos from last September and this June.
