  1. Hi guys,

I've participated in a couple of mail-rebates and they work great and I love them.

But I was wondering why these big companies do mail-rebate instead of just giving you an instant-rebate at the shop.

I'm sure there is an economical, accountant or taxes related reason for it and I would love to know it,

    thank you

  2. Thank you guys! I've read that both lenses are fantastic and that it comes down to how you feel with them.

I'll go to B&H and try them both.

Mark I'm shooting with a Canon 350D and I'll be shooting insects and flowers, so I wasn't clear on that before.

Has anybody heard of a place called TriState?

They have the Sigma for $543 online but they actually have a store on 28th and 7th or 8th Av here in NY. I'll go

    and check that out too!

    thank you

  3. Hi guys,

I've owned the Canon 100-400 for half a year now and I'm extremely happy with it. When buying though, I hesitated

a lot between this lens and the Sigma 50-500 (Bigma), and finanlly got the Canon for the IS.

Now Sigma finally released a 500mm lens with IS or OS.

Will you change the Canon for the Sigma now that both have IS?

Does anyone has any comments on the Sigma (sharpness, built...)

    I appreciated it

    simon

  4. So I'm taking the big step and changing to a Mac.

I'm deciding which computer would be better for my needs and I would be grateful

for any feedback or recommendations I get.

I edit my photos in PS CS3 and organize them in Bridge CS3. I shoot in RAW, not

    thousands but hundreds of pictures.

I have my eyes on two computers:

    1) MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive, 13 inch for $ 1620

    2) MacBook PRO Refurbished 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 200GB hard drive,

    NVIDIA 256 Mb ,15 inch for $ 1690.

Hard drive is not a big issue because I have enough space on external drives.

What I'm wondering about is if the 4GB RAM would make a huge difference or if

the NVIDIA Video card would give so much better results.

The MacBook PRO has all the nice features of the PROs, illuminated keyboard with

ambient light sensor; Multi-Touch trackpad, Firewire...

Also is it better to get a Glossy screen or a normal one?

    Many Thanks

    Simon

  5. I wouldn't go for the 28-135mm. In you Xti it would be a 45-216. the long end is great but 45mm is hardly a wide angle.

I was in the same place as you are and decided to get the 17-85 IS USM. It's basically the same lens on a crop sensor camera as the XTi.

Great lens in my opinion, very versatile, good sizes and weight. The IS is amazing and so is the IQ.

  6. I would like to buy a ring flash for my macro lens( Sigma 150mm), but I would

also like to buy an external flash for 350D.

Would it be possible to use ONLY the ringflash as a "normal" external flash, say

    for portrait and fillflash?

Is the power/range of the ringflash to little to use for none macro photography?

    Thanks a lot

    simon

  7. I'm just wondering, how do people/staff from Photo.net pick the images at the

home page? Is it by numbers of views, they go through galleries or by rating?

Also do you have to be a subscriber to be elected? I've noticed that there are

some images that are repeated every now a again.

    Just curious...

  8. When traveling wieght is all that matters to me. It would be amazing to have primes only, but they are not what I would recommend for traveling. You are restricted to the Focal lenght and you'll have to have 5 of them! I traveled for ten months around MIDDLE EAST, ASIA and SOUTH AMERICA. I had a Canon 17-85mm IS, a Peleng 8mm fish eye and a Canon 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6. The latter I've changed because of it poor IQ. But a good zoom for telephoto photography is highly recomendable. You can't always ask people if you can't take a picture of them, there's when the tele comes alive!
  9. I don't really know how to explain this, but here it goes.

I have like 5.5 Gb free in my hard disk, I batch (rizes, adjustments, convert)

convert pictures from DNG to JPEG. There were like 100 pics. After converting 20

pictures it says something like: "can't continue no space in disk, scratches(?)

are full", and the disk has like 9MB. I run PS in a PC/XP, and in one disk (with

the 5.5Gb free) but store the resultring image in another disk (with loads of

    space).

I guessing PS saves some info in some temporary file, because when I close PS

    the disk is free again.

What can I do? Is there a way to batch without PS storing temporary file. I'll

never be capable of having 20Gb free in my disk only for PS to use them in

    temporary files.

    Any ideas or comments??

    please...

  10. Also,

I wnet to the Lab today, first time, and I had my pictures ready and postprocessed, with frames and exactly like I wanted them. The guy from the Lab asked me what size and then proceeded to crop them. Is that normal? Can he just not resize the image? I ended up with pictures with no frame in one or more sides!

I tried croping to a especific size in PS but, and of course, it won't let you have the "right" composition. At least the one you want. So why bother having a 21MP camera? (No need to answer that ;)) How do you do to print unconventional sizes?

Thank a lot for your patience!
