1. Thanks for the replies. After using both lenses extensively over the last 2 days I've decided to sell the 17-35 and keep the 17-55. I don't want to give up the extra reach of the 17-55. Comparing images from each lens is really not that big a difference besides I think the 17-35 in todays market still commands a pretty nice selling price.
  2. The 35-55 range is somewhat important for the extra reach for family gatherings all around lens but prefer the bite of the 17-35. I do have a 50 1.4 that could be used in those situations. I do shoot some film on a F5 mainly B/W and Velvia but less as time goes by.

I know the 17-35 is a beter lens optically and I'm leaning that way. Going with a 35-70 would fill the gap nicely. My other lenses are all primes- 20 f/2.8, 35 f/2, 180 f/2.8, 300 f/4 and have my eye on the 70-200 f/2.8 VR and any proceeds from selling one will go to that.

  3. This is a nice problem to have but I need some advice on which lens I should

keep. I'd like to keep them both but I'd like to sell one and buy another lens.

Of course the 17-35 f/2.8 is full frame and the 17-55 f/2.8 is a DX.

Right know I'm shooting with a D200 but hoping Nikon will come out with a more

    affordable Full Frame D400? I don't need a D3 and skipping the D300 as I'd

prefer to have more lenses. Which lens would you keep and why?

  4. Another lens to take a look at is the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5. I have one and it's a nice lens and has a pretty decent Macro feature as well. I have a 17-55 some primes and a 300mm f/4 and this lens won't weigh you down.
  5. I noticed there is a firmware update (2.0.0) for Nikon D200's on the Nikon USA

    site. It addresses 2 issues:

1.Image authentication item has been added to the setup menu. The optional

Image Authentication software is required to authenticate images.

2.A Wireless transmitter item has been added to the setup menu. This item is

available only when the optional Wireless Transmitter WT-3 is connected to the

    camera.

  6. Yes, return the lens as I did. It's a terrible optic. My lens was a dog and would not take a sharp picture. I tried it on a D2X and a D200. Even on a tripod with VR off I could not capture an acceptable image. I feel sorry for the folks paying $1200.00 or more online (epay).
Coop
  7. I'm on on a PC, XP Pro using Picasa as my photo filing program (which is a great free program from google). I just put the CF card back in the camera and it shows the same image 82 times. I hope this is not an issue with the camera.

  8. I took some pictures of the various birds that visit my feeders this

morning. I uploaded the pix to my computer via a built-in CF card

reader on my computer. When I viewed the pictures in the folder they

were saved to all I see is the same picture. It showed I uploaded 82

pictures but all I see are 82 copies of the same picture. Obviously

somethings wrong as I took pictures of many differant birds. Any

ideas on what the problem could be? TIA

  9.
I had a Nikon 35Ti and didn't notice any shutter lag at all. When you press the shutter release half-way down it will focus and also acts as a focus lock (you can focus then recompose). The focus system has 833 steps and is virtually step-less given the short travel to achieve focus.

The Nikon 28Ti is the same camera with a 28mm. f/2.8 lens and both lenses are excellent. It's a great camera and I wish I hadn't sold mine 3 years ago.

  10. I have a D200 and a D70 and the grips are similiar although the D200 is larger and heavier. I like the extra weight of the D200, it gives me better stability and it just balances better.

As to the 18-200 VR it's a choice between 'Do it all' and quality. I bought one and was not impressed with it. I promptly returned it and bought the Nikon 17-55mm. f/2.8 DX. I will add the Nikon 12-24mm. DX and on the long end I'm content with my older 75-300 f/4.5-5.6 AF. For low-light I have the Nikon 50mm. f/1.8 AF-D and it's tack sharp and a steal for $99.00.

I have the 18-70mm. DX kit lens that came with my D70 and it's a good performer and is sharper than the 18-200 VR. The 18-70mm. DX is a good start for your kit.

For your Macro needs you can pick up some good deals on epay. As you can use manual focus lenses on the D200 with metering a decent 55mm. f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor AIS lens can be had for $100-140.00.

Wish you the best in your quest. Keep in mind my needs may not reflect yours so take my example with consideration. Many others will surely help you narrow things down further.

  11. Thanks Robert. I called my brother and he placed an order for one from B&H. He was jealous because I got my D200 on Sat. ;) You guys are going to love this camera, I like the larger LCD screen and the better layout of the controls over my D70. The viewfinder is better but I still would like to have one like the HP on an F3 oh well... I'm going to order the MB-200 grip/battery pack next week. I checked before posting this and the D200's are still in stock!

I love the smell of a new camera in the morning (minus the helicopters of course).
