Hi everyone. I tried making contact prints using coffee + washing soda as a
developer. For the most part I could make out an image but there was really
poor contrast. I checked it against a contact sheet I got from the lab and I
know the negative is good.
Based on looking through the site, I think I might have to use a contrast
filter. I am using Adorama RC Multi-contrast paper, Mix coffe+ washing soda and
water in used jelly jar, a water stop and Ilford rapid fix.
Also, I have a kodak carousel projector. Should I use that instead of the
Kitchen light? Thanks!

Hi Andrea.. The 70-200 2.8 should be fine for a head shot and for a waist up type shot. The 24-70 should be good for the full body shot.
-
How about a rebel xt. 70-300 F/4 IS, a 50mm f1/.8 and the Kit lens. I think that will fit your budget.

I'd have to agree here about the BW film. In the long run it's definitly cheaper and you will get better results once you get into a groove. It's pure magic to pull that strip of film off a reel and see a neg.. Freaking great!

Hi Luke, where are you located. I use Duggal in New York and I am pretty happy with thier work.
-
WHoops.. Yes.. I did mean print quality. Thanks for the insight!

I totally agree with Gary. If I had the money, I would go balls out and get a bunch of alien bees lights and modifiers. I guess it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Give us a budget, we'll let you know how you can blow it... uh invest it on lighting.

Hi, I just got a scanner for my bday. I've only scanned in a few slides and few frames of 120. I only use it for proofing. Is this what you want it for?

Hi Tara, I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. I have a couple of sb-24's, some good fast primes, lights stands umbrellas and some pocket wizards.. They take up very little room and are very easy to use and experiment with. Also, won't break the bank. Good luck!

Hi all.. I've been looking for a portable printer so that I can take it to
family events an make prints for people to take home. I am a big fan of high
quality prints from a pro-lab but for this type of situation i'd be willing to
compromise on film quality.
I've been looking at the canon selphy line of printers, but recently a friend
told me about the Sony picture station and Epson picture mate. Does anyone have
any insight on the quality of the prints from the 3 brands? Thanks. Ivan

Have you checked out Photomanhattan? They are on 14th street btwn, 5th and 6th..

I say go with a lubitel 2. I got mine for 30 bucks on the bay. It's very basic though, can be frustrating at times with crappy focusing and no meter, but it's fun.

Hi Melissa. First of all twin Daughters.. Whoa.. I got one and that seams plenty.
Have you thought about taking the strobe route? You can get an sb-24 on ebay for under 100 bucks. Get a good stand and a revesible umbrella. Maybe shell out some cash for pocket wizards or get the cheap ebay triggers from gadget infinity. I got mine for christmas and it has been a blast!
Oh, also there is blog by a baltimore sun photographer that goes in to great detail about off camera lighting.

Hobbyist/hack.. mostly AV hardly P or TV. Manual when using flash or when I AV isn't giving me what I wanted.

Don't do the sheet background. You'd need a pretty big sheet for that and it will probably a PITA to get all the wrinkles looking nice.
My $.02... Ever watch the old family fued? Remember how they posed the families before they came out. Mom on a chair dad behind her. A couple of kids sitting on the floor, the other sibling kneeling behind them. That sort of thing. You can even incorporate the tree. Something like that..
Bounce the flash off the ceiling and you should be good!

Ahh I remeber the first time I developed my own film. Freaking awesome. Try this... This is what I used the first few times until I got the hang of it..
-
Sorry about that.. Well I cropped it down to roughly a square 4x4. It's 1mb jpg. rightnow.
-
I started fiddleing around last night with photo shop in trying to make a
photocard. I basically started out with a square photo added a panel 25 pixels
long on the right side and put some text in there. How can I make sure that I
keep the same perspective with the photo and ajoining text when I want to print
out 4x6 pictures.
Thanks!

canon af35ml with the flash popped up.

I went down to ICP to check out the Ecotopia exhibit. There are some really
great pictures there. My question is about the format. Most musuems denote what
kind of print it is,( ie. Chromogenic, lith, platinum etc) but how come they
don't mention the film/camera/digital? On one level, it kind of makes sense,
you don't ask the artist if he used paintbrushes, spatulas, or other
implements. By the way, I ask this, not to start a debate about film vs.
digital. It's just that the prints a huge and they have so much detail, it was
really pretty amazing.

Dan.. your pictures look GREAT! Where can we see more? Did you take a shot of your setup?
-
Hey that's a great idea!!

I thought about the air tran thing and normally I would be all for it. But I thought that since time is of the essence here, the cab would have been faster. I just thought of something else, the cab starts off as a tour of brooklyn, You can see the verezanno narrows, the coney island rides and the New York Skyline from Brooklyn. A 30 bucks well spent.

How's this sound..
12PM land in JFK pick up a cab and head to Wall Street.
12:45 Down by wall street you have the NYSE, Trinity Church, Bowling Green and you can see the Statue of liberty.
1:45 Walk up to the World Trade Center site.
2:15 Buy an unlimted metrocard and Take the 4 or 5 train uptown to canal street (chinatown)
3:00 after walking west on canal take the E train uptown to West 4th street. The village. (Option to stop here for pizza on sixth ave.) you have some flexibility here but I suggest checking out bleeker street and the surrounding area then walking north to Union Square.
4:15 Union Square Green Market (depends on the day, i think its open on mon, wed, and friday + saturday) It's an open air type market good times. If it's not there on that day, and you haven't eaten, stop in at whole foods for a sandwich and eat at union square. There are a bunch of good places to eat but you are on a time budget here. (Adorama isn't too far from here)
OR
4:20 34th Street Herald Square: It's totally nuts here.. but head west to 9th ave and you will see the Mecca of Photography, err uuh the Jerusalem of Photography. B&H
5:45 No trip to NYC would be complete without visiting Times Square. Take the A, C or E train to Time Square. Another totally nuts place. This part should be fun though since it's lit up like Times Square!
It's dark at this point so lets go see the locals at home and take the train home with them.
6:45 Getting close to dinner time. YOu still should have a good amount of time left here. What do you want to eat? Were going to Queens! If you want Greek food, take the N to Astoria, get off on the last stop and Walk under the train till you get to Elias place for Fish. When you are done you can take a livery cab back to JFK, 30 Bucks.
OR
Indian Food or Latin American Cusine, Take the 7 to Roosevelt Ave. Pretty much anywhere you go is pretty good.
OR
Stay in the city and head up to Rockafeller Center on the F Train.
OR Walk up Sixth Avenue, see Radio City Music Hall, and see the bottom part of Central Park.
You should have enough time to make it back to the airport and have a beer before your flight.
Good luck and happy travels.

awesome, Thanks!
I think i'm going to try pumping the developer up with some Vitamin C and use my projector as an enlarger. Btw, I have a rosco filter pack. What color would I use achieve something like grade 1.5 on MC paper?
This was new years day and I was tooling around wiith it. Of the prints I really thought came out well, I gave them to my daughter to play with..
