I'd like to thank everyone for their responses and the reference links. They are particularly helpful. I've got some homework to do, but I'll make my decision in a few days - and I'll let everyone know which camera I chose and why. Thanks again for all the advice.

I agree with Harvey. If the extra features aren't the issue, I'd suggest buying the D50 body and the 18-70 DX lens. I have one, and can attest to the sharpness and quality of the lens. I just wish it didn't feel so cheap.

The 18-70 DX is a great little lens. I use it with my D70 and get remarkable results.

I bought a used MC-30 on eBay to use with my N90s. I think I paid $45 for it and it looks new and works perfectly. However, if you want a timed shutter release, then you'll have to go with the MC-20. I'm not sure how much they run.

I'm relatively new to this site, but have gotten some wonderful
advice from several people here. So, it is with this in mind that I
bring another question to the board.
I would like to buy a Nikon manual-focus camera body. I have owned
several Nikon AF bodies and a DSLR, but have never owned a manual-
focus Nikon. I recently went on a trip with some friends - one of
whom had a FM2. She seemed to enjoy the camera quite a bit, and the
more I watched her use the camera, the more I thought about getting
one for myself.
So, my question is this: Which MF camera body would be a good
choice for me? I mostly shoot portraits and landscapes, but there's
so many different models that I get lost in the alpahbet soup (FG,
F3, FM2, etc.). Furthermore, approximately how much should I expect
to pay for one of these cameras (preferably in good shape)? Thanks
in advance for any help you might offer.

I've bought and sold several N90s cameras on eBay over the last 2 years. I keep thinking that I really don't need a film camera. However, I've never had a problem with any of them. I always make sure that the seller has nearly perfect feedback and the camera is in mint condition. As a matter of fact, I just bought another one a month ago (with the MB-10 and MF-26 back. I paid $275 for the complete package. Do your homework and you can save a lot of money and still end up with a great camera.

I use several SLR lenses with my D70. My 80-200 2.8, 35-70 2.8, and 50mm 1.8 all work well. I have invested in a 18-70 DX lens that works well too.

My Dell works well.

The 28-105 is a great lens. It works well on both my N90s and my D70. It will be hard to go wrong with this lens.
-
I've never tried Lexar, but Sandisk Extreme III works well for me. I'd stay away from the generic brands.
-
I've got both the 18-70 DX and a cheap 50 1.8D...they're both GREAT lenses. The 50mm is versatile and cheap...I'll never get rid of it.

I use the SanDisk Extreme III, and love them. I tried to get by with a Transcend (generic) brand before, and I had a lot of problems with corrupt files and missing images. Spend the extra bucks if you can, and you won't have to worry about those problems.
-
yeah...the 50 1.8 is about as handy a lens as you'll find. They're cheap, and you can do a lot with em.
-
I tried getting a generic brand card on the cheap. I had some image retrieval problems and corrupt image problems. I bit the bullet and bought a 1G Sandisk Extreme III and have had no such problems. So I bought another as a backup.

I bought a new Nikon SB-600 on eBay for $169 delivered. I wanted the SB-800, but couldn't justify the extra expenditure. I'm perfectly satisfied with my flash. Shop around on eBay...you can get some great deals.
-
I agree with the first answer. Lenses such as the 50 1.8 and the 80-200 2.8 have worked well for me shooting indoor basketball games. I'd also suggest a 35-70 2.8 as well. Budget constraints have kept me from purchasing the DX lenses, but that's been a blessing in disguise as the "D" lenses I've been using with my D70 have taken some wonderful shots.

I've been asked to do a bit of photography work shooting musicians
onstage in a couple bars. I don't want to take my good Nikon lenses
into these places where some drunk can spill his drink on them. So,
I'm looking for an inexpensive general purpose lens. I'm thinking
about a Sigma 28-105mm AF-D f2.8-4 lens. Has anyone got any comments
or experiences with this lens? Thanks for any advice.

I'm thinking of buying a Nikon 35-70 2.8D lens to couple with my D70
to take low-light shots and fairly close range. I can get this lens
pretty cheap. Is this a good idea?
-
Thanks for all the great advice. Most of it came into play and it was one great learning experience. I now know that I need a smaller, fast lens for shoots like this. I used my 80-200 2.8 and a 50mm 1:1.8 (which I got some incredible shots). If it weren't for you guys and your advice, I probably wouldn't have even carried that lens. I had a blast during the shoot, and even managed to get the shots I needed. Thanks for everything...

Hello...I'm new to this site and in search of help/advice. I'm an
amateur photographer and have been assigned to photograph a local
outdoor festival in my hometown. I've never taken photos for
publication before - only for my own personal enjoyment - and am a
bit nervous about doing so. I'm shooting digital (Nikon D70) with a
Nikon 80-200mm 1:2.8 lens. I'll be photographing mostly bands and
musicians, and I really want to do a good job. I'll be working all
day and into the night, so I'll be using a speedlight for many of the
shots. Can anyone offer any advice that might help me make it
through the shoot without panicking? Thanks in advance for any
suggestions.
