The LL site has been recommending the same thing for some time now. Of course, the people over there use dslr mostly.
In the real world, some P&S digicams overexpose. Hence the need for -1/3 to -2/3 exposure compensation for these camera.

"All dSLRs look the same as well."
And they all come from a land where non-conformism is frowned upon, to say the least.

Click on TestBilder for test images. To my eyes, the A640 pics look softer than
the A630's.

which bw film scans best?
Why, it's Ilford FP4+ of course.
Of the three you've listed, I would say Ilford XP2+ (not SP 2).

That's about all is known about the successors to the A620.

If we take a hint from the camera model, spatial resolution should be at 4.6mp. That should skyrocket Sigma cameras to the top of sales charts!

Olympus's share of the dslr market as shrunk to 2.8% in July. How long can they
survive with these sales figures?

"of which I assume that Olympus and Pentax take the larger share"
Olympus share has shrunk to less than 3%. Will Olympus be forced out of the market?
They have failed to update the excellent E-1 dslr, so there paying for it.

"Since the Sony has SSS Super Steady Shot reputed to be equal to 5.5 stops..."
Has this been proven? If so, where can you read a report?

"Whoever designed their web page should be dragged out at dawn and shot."
Be carefull here.
If I'm not mistaken on the country of origin, they actually do it, ie have public execution in stadiums. Ya, I know this is 2006, but it still is happening.

Any of the newer Canon SD serie will do just fine. They do not have the agressive noise reduction that some other camera have. Details are kept not blown away by NR.
And if you ever need to clean up a picture, NoiseNinja does a better job than integrated camera NR software.
Others camera's claim of high ISO is only possible through agressive noise reduction. Fine if you only want 4x6's and web use.

Samantha,
Why do you feel that you need your wedding shot in digital. Your uncle has probably shot hundreds of wedding with film cameras, why subject him to digital equipement he has never used before, for a wedding even.
Please, if it has to be digital, let him have the camera and lenses for a month before the wedding at the very least.
Anyways, I don't understand why you need to subject your uncle to undue stress.
Oh, I get it. You want your wedding shot for free. And you get to keep the camera after the wedding. That's... well I won't say it.

Want to see what can be achieved with a Canon A620? Of course, this photographer is not a newbie. But, again he chose to go with the A620.

"D200 with Nikon 18-70mm lens for $1,269 - Is this for real?"
Yes it is!. They don't take funny money.
Want to part with real money real fast? Give them your credit card number. Better yet, send them a Western Union moneygram.
Then you'll find out the meaning of that P.T. Barnum saying.

If you can have them printed on traditional silver paper that will give you better grayscale neutrality.

"I have been thinking about the Canon A620 but it does not have a sport mode. Does this mean it has bad shutter lag?"
There is no relation between the two. A certain "Idiot mode" on a camera or lack of it doesnt reflect the camera's handling speed.
In fact, the only exposure mode really needed on a camera are P, S, A, M. "Idiot Modes" are just preset shutter and speed values. Nothing else.

"The only downside to a dedicated B&W DSLR is that they wouldn't sell many..."
You'd be surprised.
-
"Could we say that Canon lenses are more versatile and widely used comparing to Nikkor or Nikon lenses"
Nope. Nikon's new 18-135mm lens will be hard to beat. And then there's the 18-200mm with VR that's so in demand that it's backordered all over the world.

The only such dedicated camera that I'm aware of was the flawed Kodak DCS 760

Not exacly L.A. but Oakhurst. Anyway, they work with clients over the internet.

Barts,
As a starter, I would invite you to visit Lloyd Erlick's site.
Don't know if Lloyd has begun working with digital. Anyways, he's a great b&w portrait artist.
As for lighting, you can use your Canon Speedlights mounted on a lighting stand and bouncing or shooting through a small photographic unbrella.

Ricoh GR Digital b&w pics
in Mirrorless Digital Cameras
Posted
I remember when the GR Digital came out out people remarked on how noisy were
posted pics from the camera.
Pics from the link below were converted to b&w from dng files in Adobe
Lightroom, tonality worked on with Lightzone and final image adjustement done in
Photoshop.
I get a kick out of some post where a person with a "push a button mentality"
complains that the pics taken with his own camera don't look right and need work.
