I am in the process of building a new garage with a photography
studio overhead. My studio will be 14' x 36'. I specialize in
children's portraits. I have a blank canvas and need some help on
choosing overhead lighting, flooring, color on the walls etc. Is
hardwood better or carpet? If I bounce off of side walls or the
ceilings does the color make a difference? Should I make it into two
rooms (one for studio 14' x 20' and one for lobby 14' x 16') or leave
one open room? How much room do I need for a changing room? My
ceilings will only 8 1/2' high so that is one negative. Again, I have
a blank room and need help designing it so any help from your
experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone - I need your help. I have been commissioned to do a
baby announcement style greeting card for a new baby girl. They are
just thinking of the common 4x8 style greeting card with the stats
written on the side or bottom. Do any of you have suggestions on labs
with templates or recommendations??? I could make my own with PS but
knowing me I'll spend way too much time trying to perfect it and will
not make a dime. I am looking for something reasonable and quick.
Thanks.

I shoot digital only and typically do JPEG files. I also manipulate the photos in photoshop. I am just starting out so I have only one session a week. I am in the process of building a studio so by the first of the year I should have more business.

Dan - Thanks for your response. I am looking for a server where I can post my customers (seniors, children & families) proofs so they can order their final prints directly from a lab. I would like to set the prices and password protect the pictures. I don't do a ton of business yet so I would rather pay a commission fee. I would like to have paypal and/or credit card processing... Does that help??? I have found a few different sites but I wanted to check all of my options and get peoples opinions before I sign up.

Ashley - I didn't read all of the threads so I don't know if someone recommended this.... I too have been in this situation. I would have your friend purchase the film of your/her choice and tell her that you will take the pictures for $100 fee. Then give her the film to process and make final prints from. That way you get $100 for your time and she can deal with the hassels of enlarging and processing... Just an idea. Best of luck

I am looking for for an online host to download customers photos. So
far I have looked into LabPrints, Printroom, Smugmug, and Shutterfly
Pro... Does anyone have any recommendations on these or other hosting
sites. I want my customers to be able to order the downloaded prints
on professional quality paper at reasonable costs. It would be a
bonus to be able to make a URL page for my studio without having my
own site as for now I am just getting my toes wet with my
photography... Thanks for your help.

I am looking for a storefront to post pictures for my customers where
they can order directly from a lab. So far I have looked into
Printroom and Shutterfly Pro. Does anyone else have any ideas or
recommendations? Thanks for your help....

Please help!!! I am in the process of setting up a small in-home
studio that will primarily be used for portraits up to groups of 4
or less. I have no idea what type of lighting equiment I need. I
prefer soft lighting versus cold or stark. I also do not have a huge
budget - I'd like to stay under $350.00 if possible. It would also
be nice if the system or light is portable. I am using a Nikon D70
with only a SB600 now so anything should be an improvement. Is
continous lighting better for beginners or strobe lighting? Any help
or enlighting you could provide would be so much appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Thanks Steve and Bob....
The idea of one black wall and one white wall is great....
I guess you never did recommend a color, Steve. Do you have a preference?
Does flooring matter much? What do you guys use? Would hardwood make the stands more stable or less stable?
Should I have any overhead lights to accent on some occasions? What do you recommend?
I am pretty new to this so the whole technical aspects are pretty foreign to me. Thanks again for your help.
