Tim . I really like this Still Life rendition. It has a soft luminosity that is very moving and inspiring .

I read your cryptic comments that appears to imply  it is a Platinum Print from a digitally generated negative , as well as the comments from a viewer , that it cannot be Platinum due to the deep blacks and brilliant highlights.

I have been studying the process of Hybrid digital/ Platinum and see no conflict, knowing that digitally generated negatives can be precisely tailored to produce a full scale of tones in a particular process and further optimized for a particular image.

All I can say is that your image has reinforced my resolve to get into Platinum printing with my 5x7 Linhof,  seeing that your image that , on screen,  is just a bit larger than 5x7,  is sufficiently expressive to pursue contact printing from  camera film negatives , as a start,  and move on to digitally enlarged negatives when my grip on the process will allow.

What draw me to your image initially was the statement that it was processed in Photoshop , almost implying a negative was  digitally generated ,  which would mean that it is the result of half-toning the image with a digital screen , either bitmap screen or stochastic screen . I peeked into the image,  looking for signs of screening and found none. So I am puzzled like the other poster and would like to ask you to elaborate on your cryptic statement of "Platinum Print done in Photoshop".

Is it a real Platinum Print from digital negative or is it the result of Tonal Manipulation in Photoshop to achieve the "look" of a Platinum print?.

Either way I am motivated to continue towards Platinum Printing and if I can get my prints to look like yours I would be very happy . Luis

I am amazed that you do not have any other comments. This photograph is powerful , even metaphysical . The Duality and transiency of things have been perfectly captured.

Art is a combination of Vision and Craft . You have both.

The art of Seeing not only means perceiving the esthetic potential of a Scene , but also in recognizing where in it lies its expressive power.

Unless we are able to recognize that , we will not be able to tailor the processing to different image needs ,in order to deliver their visual message ,as we found it .

Amazing image that reflects the results of intense work pursuing Artistic Vision and should elicit admiration , serve as inspiration but never

should it receive the kind of statements expressed by Marc G. in the posting " A great picture that turned average..."

This kind of commentaries can only serve to quickly remind us of the old saying " If you point to the Moon , with your finger, the Fool looks at

your finger".

Lets hope that MR Marc G. learns to incorporate the kind of Vision found in this image , to his own photography in the field , and perhaps one

day he too will make it to the Photograph of the Week without having somebody embarrassingly point out his own imperfection.

That is quite a subject!!

Excellent Image Johanna. The hidden passing of time ,recycling cultures and generations alike. We can only be silent witnesses to that and sometimes create a record for those who can see and feel.

You are right that Hand held exposures for a sequence are difficult , particularly in low light. I must however , point out ,that this Scene only existed in my eye!

There was not dramatic lighting and no ray of light at all. This image is the result of a Digital Montage in Auto Pano and hand painting the beam of light in Photoshop CS3. I am considering some variations of this image that would include some other elements, please check my portfolio later on.

Art really begins with MAKING images ,rather than CAPTURING them . Art is about

personal expression and you choose the media that best suits you. I chose Digital

Painting.

When we like something is because we see in it something of us that we like. The

reverse is also true ,and it can be very useful to try making images of what repels

us until we can find beauty on it.
