Quote "Digital ICE dust/scratch removal features with b&w scanning" do not work
If you find an answer to this problem, with any make of scanner, many many of us would all be grateful. ICE is down to the hardware and the light sources available - The issue comes down to the silver grains in B&W emulsion interacting with the light source used to identify dust ect on the emulsion.
Not a Konica-Minolta limitation, its just down to thats where we are with the technology at present.

Hi ? you need to be explicit in terms of step by step process being followed. Here is what it is for my Vn1 of the scanner.
With the scanner connected to the PC turn it on.
There must not be anything inserted in the scanner and the door must be closed
At this stage the green light will be flashing, wait a few minutes for it to warm up
Start the Dimage scan utility ? the green light will still be blinking
This will load firmware into the scanner and will initialise it.
The Minolta logo will be displayed on the PC screen and the scanner will make various noises
Depending on your PC etc this takes several minutes
When initialisation is complete, the PC screen will change and show a screen with what looks like empty film holder. and the green light will stop blinking.
IT is only at this stage you should insert the film holder and set the scan preferences, select negative postive etc.
I once had the door get stuck in the open position and the rest pin was used to nudge it closed.

You say that you are
then post-processed using Photoshop LE
Not familiar with this version, but suspect from the LE designation it does not support 16-bit image files.

Check out some of the comparative reviews on the net. One of the more comprehensive is Monitor Calibrators reviewed

Hi Mel
just a thought, but the setup preferences for the 5400 have 2 settings for autoexposure, one for negatives and one for slides. Make sure you have them both checked, I think the default for autoexposure is OFF.

Hello Kathy

your use of the graphics card configuration to adjust your monitor gama needs a little clarification. The value shown in the configuration is not an absolute value like 2.2 or 1.8, it is the extent of the change that is to be made with a value of 1 indicating no chnage. So setting this value to 2.2 will give the results you saw.

It is possible to get reasonable results without hardware calibration, look at the link below for detailed step by step instructions.

Thanks for posting this Mendel
Not something I have tried but is going to save me hours of effort in not having to take slides out of the glass holders and remount.
The big advantage of course as you mention is getting edge to edge sharpness. Will try it tonight.
