Joseph, You are right!!!
I can verify that it happens (to some degree) with my brand new dynax 7 + 24-105 to my surprise! Near infinity was shown as 5m (at 24mm).
This should be a AF design issue which is not specific to minoltas. Related to depth of field of any given perspective.
Mine looks less serious than your situation though. Depending on how good the focus was at 24, when I zoom up to 105, I see blurring or no blurring. Obviously focusung is not always perfect with this consumer zoom(don't forget max apt. is f3.5).
I tested 28mm f2 prime, it was perfect at any distance, also 50mm f1.4 was. I know my other primes are also ok.
I've never got any roll back yet from this zoom, but I don't expect blurred shots.
Do your photos come out blurred?
-
I had done it! Never regret. I love the f1.4, it is obviously improved in any sense.. I bought a brand new one(55mm). I can use my 55mm filters.
Light fall off with f1.7 wide open was obvious. I used f1.4 wide open a lot. Bokeh is different due to more circular apt. Hood is great. Used it for concerts, portraits(wide open).
If you liked f1.7 you'll love f1.4
But it is your choice at the end.

I asked same question to myself recently. My dynax 7 was broken. I was lucky to find a brand new one(with guarantee) extremely cheap as demand was low. That new body costed me 1/10th of a new 7D body!!!!!!
I could have bought 7D though, but there were still some problems reported with that body. I will buy a digital body when it is full frame and mature enough and continue scanning for the time being.
It is a presonal decision though. I'm sure 7D is a fine camera if you are lucky to get one without glitches!
good luck

I'm sorry to say that salty water is the worst enemy of the circuitry!
Taking the battery out was the first thing to do. Who know what has been fried already. Probably only minolta themselves know..
Good luck

opps, question marks are all GBP

I C, this either shows
1- British economy is going down or,
2- Film is literally dead or,
3- Dixons are going bankrupt!!!!!!!!
I asked the salesman how this price is possible(?350), as last year it was over ?700 for the same body+lens. He smiled and said "I can always charge you if you want sir!"
Lowest price on the net I saw for this kit is still ~ ?750
I bought several Velvia 50s from Dixons for 90p each!!!! Yeah it happens even here in UK. They are just clearing all film stuff..
I have nothing to do with aliens though ;)

I have no idea what it stands for literally. But all G lenses are optimised for best optically quality. Construction of lets say 85mm 1.4 I have is incredible. All metal like in the old machines. Non G lenses look like toys compared to it..
-
I have one designed in 1993. All metal and heavy. It has that gold stripe. But it has no mentioning of "G" on it either. Your gold band seems to have been stripped off(just over 85mm 1.4 (D) line) somehow.
I believe it is G anyhow as I've not heard of any newer non G.

May be irrelevant but power matters if you intend to use it as bounce flash..(Just a thought)

Yes, this is a classic case with (now old) Maxxum 7000s.
I had problems with a purchase over ebay, seller was nice enough to exchange with a working one..
I say definitely not worth the repair, find a new one.

Indeed! I love this camere..
thks Brett.

Dixons were clearing film bodies. Luck me! I had to buy 24-105 with it but happily did it as I plan to buy digital in the future. 7+lens was 350 pounds. Lens was worth 270 punds seperately!
I'll have a look at manual again to see how to set exposure steps..
cheers

I posted a this one last week, so this one is a kind of follow up:
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00CVto
So I decided to check the prices of a new dynax 7 before it is too
late as it is discontinued. My old one still seems to work with slow
lenses.
I found a brand new body with 1 yr. guarantee for 80 GBP!!!! This is
an insult to this camera by the way.
So there was no reason to get my camera fixed to work with 85mm f1.4.
I bought this brand new baby. Even the sound of it is different. It is
superb as I expected.
My question is my old camera had total 17 aperture steps. This new
one(which looks identical) has 25 aperture steps!! What a nice
suprise! I checked the custom settings again, no mentioning of
aperture precision setting..
So, I'm wondering if minolta has improved + bug fixed the latest
bodies. If so where can I find these changes?
(Because this one also seems to focus way faster).

af selection dial is not perfectly clicking on the points. Too obscure for me. I wish it was more responsive.. That is why I almost never use it..
-
Me too! I have never used any other than center one. Always locked.
But the af lock knob drives me crazy as it shifts out of lock position by mistake sometimes. I don't understand that sophisticated multiple sensor idea. Not for me..
-
I only know 100mm which is the sharpest lens I have. Sometimes too sharp! Bokeh is incredible as expected from a macro lens. I definitely recommend it.

I think my 28mm f/2 and 100mm macro works perfectly at all steps. I need to finish a roll to verify though. But thanks for the link Michael. If it is cheap enough, I'll get it fixed.

I began to have problems after a heavy use of my dynx 7 body,
involving many lens changes, recently. Basically I realised that the
arm that moves lens aperture got stuck. I put it on track. But now
when I use f/1.4 lenses, I hear gears screaming inside. When I put
f/2, f/2.8 lenses camera is totally fine(I tested using dept of field
button).
It seems to me that aperture control gears have been worn out a bit.
My question is: I bought this body used, is it sensible to get it
repaired(and how much would it cost in England) or just leave it and
use limited type of lenses.
Thanks in advance,
Ersagun

Hmm! I read the article from Bob Atkins. I definetely was not aware of "Circle of Confusion" concept! I got confused first but now I understand. There is a gain of 1.5x DOF with 7D's sensor fir the same fixed lens.
Still i'm happy that DOF scale on these lenses can be used(with aperture corection factor of 1.5)
if I don't make any sense here, one needs to take the agony of reading that article ;)
-
I was more concerned about whether I can use my fixed lenses for getting same bokeh. The answer seems to be yes. I mean I know image will be a crop. I'm ok with that. I understand that i will be able to use the DOF scale on these lenses for hyperfocal distance purposes. I love using it with landscapes!
Paul thanks for the link

I have had both, 1.4 obviously better. Between f1.7 - 2.8 bokeh is obviously better with 1.4. Photos look sharper with 1.4. I might be fooled though, my 1.4 is brand new and 1.7 was used and a bit dusty.
-
Chad, exactly. But I was thinking a situation in which two cameras are on tripods and same meters away from the subject. In this case depth of field at say f/2.8 will be same on 7D AND dynax 7. But ofcourse I would get a larger view from dynax 7 when I scan my slide...
i think I have no more theoretical questions,
Cheers all,
E.

Thanks to all of you guys especially Lens Four!
That was really useful for me, and relieving to know that AF works well.
I will get the 7D one day. May be when prices go a bit down and my stocks of film begin do disappear.
Lens Four I'm looking forward to seing yor latest images on your web site,
Cheers!

Wow! Thanks Lens Four!
One picture says 1000 words! You said thousands ;)
They really look good.
Although i don't have experience with 200/2.8, I can imagine the results with my own set.
Have you experienced backfocusing problems with 28/2? or your 200mm?

Joseph,
I'll let you know if my results are ok when I get the film processed. But I think this as good as slow 24-105 zoom gets :(
It is just a consumer zoom. I don't rule out a genuine problem with yours though.
