Well composed and I like the clouds in the top right. A slight pity about the part gondola bottom left, but not sure what you could do about it. Might be worth upping the contrast, or simulating a red filter in post-processing.

Hi. Your 'angled' style was quite popular a few years ago as I recall, but not sure whether that is quite as true today. Viewed as a graphic image there are some strengths, but I would lose the dark post in the top left. I'd also up the contrast and lose a bit of the foreground.

Very good composition here. I'd perhaps up the contrast a little and maybe 'import' a more interesting sky (or at least darken the existing one).

Interesting mix of graphical and human elements together with excellent exposure control. It would have been very easy to horribly underexpose this scene. I just wonder about the girl looking at the camera rather than her friend.

I love the juxtaposition of the couple on the left and the artwork on the right. I wonder if it's the reflections in the artwork glass that are the problem? A polariser might have helped, but at the cost of a couple of stops.

  1. Very nicely composed with some great colour here. The histogram in CS5 suggests that whilst there's a full range of tones, they are biased to the left with some blocked up shadows. A quick play with shadows/highlights gave this result - which may or may not be better!

I agree with Karl. I'd like just a little more detail in the sky - my histogram has a full range of tones, but it's skewed to the left a little too much for my tastes. Otherwise very good technique shown here and a most interesting location.

Very interesting location - my brother lives in Dover! My adjustments are simply with the shadow/highlight tool and a small crop off the bottom. The unadjusted image is rather dark which hides the very interesting details in the building. The crop is a matter of taste and opinion!

  2. I think the lighting is fine - no harsh shadows and the colours in the stonework come through really well. You've got a hint of clockwise rotation here and I think I might crop off some of the wall on the left (probably about a third). Can't decide about the figure in the doorway - it would clone out easily though. I also wonder if a viewpoint slightly to the left would have revealed an interesting tree! Otherwise, textures and tones come across very well.

  3. Hi. You are grappling with some pretty difficult light here resulting in rather harsh shadows. However the overall exposure has held up pretty well. My 'fix' has put a bit more detail in the shadows (shadow / highlight tool) and also done something with the converging verticals (which some would say isn't really needed!).

Good effort with the exposure. You have managed to hold detail in both highlights and shadows. In my adjustment, I have corrected the angle (0.81 degree rotation anticlockwise), cropped a little off the bottom to remove the distracting stands and made some small shadow / highlight adjustments to reduce the 'glare'.

    I hope this is useful!

  4. The image contains a full range of tones as well as blocked up shadows and burnt out highlights (at least according to the histogram in CS5. The histogram is also skewed to the left - adjusting the gamma to about 1.2 seems to give better balance.

If you have camera raw or better Nikon Capture NX2, I'd punch in some highlight recovery and shadow fill to extract more of that interesting detail.

My adjustment  has a simple highlight / shadow adjustment in CS5 but the histogram is still showing blocked shadows and burnt out highlights. Tone distribution is much better though.

  5. You have many excellent images in your portfolio, but this one doesn't quite do it for me. I'd like to see more of the house and its context - perhaps a portrait shot. Still, there are some interesting colours and textures here to enjoy.

  6. Well seen and nice exposure. I find the '16' a bit distracting, but want to keep some of the handrail detail. So I might clone out the 16 and yellow surround and crop to just above the light coming through the glass of the door near '16'.

  7. Nice idea here. For balance, I'd have a go at correcting the perspective distortion and then crop off the left side of the image to match the right (and so remove the red on the extreme left too. Finally, a bit more light and contrast is needed to give the image some punch - easily done in software as there's image detail there.

Strong graphic lines here and a well seen image. I'd probably have a go at correcting the perspective distortion. I'd also try to put a bit more contrast in the image to emphasise some of the interesting shapes and patterns here.

  8. Good potential here. If possible, I'd have liked a dead straight on view with a level base (this rotates to the right) and completely vertical columns. I think there may be a little burnout at the back too. Finally, one or three people would be better than two in this situation.
