    Simply Southend

    Hi Thena and Paul,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my photo.

Thena the haze in around the tree I think is lens flair, though a group of gnats sounds a nicer cause.

Paul, Southend has changed a lot in the last twenty years, you probably would not recognise many parts of it. I dont live there. On the day I took the shot I had been to visit my accountant whos office is at the top of the hill to the left of the circular building, which is the passenger lift which links the lower level of the seafront to the upper level of pier hill. I never liked this shot but I posted it because it summed up my mood on the day. I am amazed you two happened by on the same day a year and a half after I posted it.

    Thanks once more.

    Best regards

    Tony

  1. John, I love this shot, the colours, the horizontal separation betwen colour and grey, the vertical separation and the placing of the guy by the join in the wall, on the thirds. You have hit the nail on the head regarding ratings. I too have had poor ratings for shots which in my mind rank among ''my best''. Yet have been given a host of 6-6s.for shots which I have never been totally happy with. Winston Churchill said '' You can please some of the people some of the time, but, you cannot please all of the people all of the time.'' Seems it applies to photograophy ratings aptly. One thing puzzles me with this shot. You have captured the movement in the guys body and foot suggesting to me a shutter speed of say < 20th second. Yet the background is pretty sharp. A great result from a hand held shot from a vehicle?

    Static Attack

This is my grandaughter suffering the effect on her hair of static build up

through bouncing on her trampoline.Shame about the background as

there was a nice backdrop of trees behind me.

    C&C welcome.

  2. Mark, many thanks for your comments. this was shot on a fairly dull day, mid morning so light was pretty uninteresting. image was cropped a bit and the sky levels adjusted to give the mood and foreground levels lightened and some saturation adjustement.my photoshop skills are still fairly limited and I am realising I need to spend more time learning PS techniques esp layering and blending layers.

  3. Hi Mark.

This is a superb composition. I like the way the land and sea horizons and angle of the cliffs disect the frame and give symetry, yet the the horizons of land and sea also accord to the thirds rule. A very original crop technique and nice DOF.
