An update on my latest experience with HC-110:

This time, I was careful to be really gentle with the developer; following Greg Mironchuk and Thomas's advice, I agitated ever so slightly during development (2 inversions per minute) and with dilution "h" (1:63) - the results are more satisfying compared to my last round of development, in holding details in highlight areas.
However, this was TMAX 400 (and not HP5+) so I wasn't sure whether to post in this thread, but I guess this turned more into a discussion on HC-110, so it's kind of good for continuity. These were developed for 10 minutes (temperature 22 degrees Centigrade) with agitation 2 inv/minute throughout, stop bath with water for 15 seconds, fixed with Kodak rapid fixer for 4 minutes w/ constant agitation, and washed for 6 minutes in water before drying.
As always, it'd be good to learn how to improve upon the present state of affairs :)

Thanks, Mike and Loren, for your detailed suggestions. That would be great help for a quick exploration of the area. I'll be travelling from NJ so won't get a chance to take the Blue Ridge Parkway! Avishek, they say Fall's the best time in Shenandoah and I'm not overtly optimistic about end summer. Having said that nature almost always eludes predictions and abounds in surprises :)

I'd spend the coming weekend in Shenandoah National Park, and look forward to
shooting landscapes. Maybe this is not the best time to visit, but any
recommendations on particularly (photographically or otherwise) interesting hike
trails (the nps.gov site lists too many to check-out on a short trip like this)
would be really useful. I'd be doing the Skyline drive of course - please
recommend stopping points which left you stunned and dumbfounded on your last
visit :)
Thanks, K.

Thanks, Brian and Scott, for your feedback. I'm mainly worried about the price - phototech in NYC is quoting $140 for the camera service alone. I could get a new camera body for that. There is of course sentimental value - my dad has been using the gear off and on all the while and only recently he discovered all this. But then, as you both noted, one has to be practical. Will see what I can do!

I have an old Minolta X-500 which I would like to have repaired (shutter, meter
and light shields would need repairing) and a Minolta 50 mm/1.4 lens which has
to be fungus cleaned.
I am looking for a reliable and affordable place in New York City or New Jersey,
where I could get these servicing done. All suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kasturi

I would be developing a couple of rolls of Ilford HP5+ 400 ISO in HC-110
developer. The massive
development chart suggests a developing time of 2.5 minutes for dilution A
and 5 minutes for dlution B. I wanted to double check that time with anyone with
prior experience with HP5+. It would be further helpful to know the frequency of
agitation. Also, which of the two dilutions is preferred? I guess that's a basic
developing question I have - what are the pros and cons of using dilutions A or B?

SP,
I had the same question after the negatives came out. First I thought it was a developing error. Then I googled something on the lines of " troubleshooting wavy bands running through the negative". It seems the negatives bear strong symptoms of damage due to x-ray scanning at the airport. I made the mistake of not requesting my films to be hand-checked. The x-ray at the security check is in principle (as the airports claim) not harmful to films below 800 ISO, but in my case, they clearly affected 400 ISO film. Sad, isn't it?

Thomas,
Thanks for your interest in this. Here was what I did (basically following Henry Horenstein's book for darkroom beginners and Kodak's online publication for developing times):
I prepared a working solution of 500 ml using 16 ml HC-110. The temperature was 20 degrees centigrade. Developing time was 3.75 minutes. I stirred continuously for the first 30 seconds, and then for 5 seconds after every 30 second interval. I didn't really invert the tank fearing spillage, but shaked it slowly but at quite a large angle roughly once every two seconds during the agitation periods.
Please tell me if I did something wrong, or what modifications you recommend.
Thanks again.

So here are some scans from my first darkroom venture. I used HC-110, water as stop bath and Kodak fixer. It was great fun for sure!

I am looking forward to get some of my scans (from color negatives and slides)
printed. Any recommendations for a good photo lab in NYC/NJ area (I know there
are too many - perhaps that's the problem!) would be great help!
Thanks in advance!!

I'm planning to start developing my own black and white films (no
printing for now) this summer. So I need to set up a primitive
darkroom somewhere in the apt. I shoot Tri-X and recently started
shooting Delta and HP5.
I would really appreciate if you could recommend an all-round
developer and general darkroom chemistry and supplies to get. I have
no prior experience in the darkroom, so please include all gory
details. It would also greatly help to know if there is a website/book
to learn the basics. I am reasonably close to New York City, so
availability isn't a problem. But please recommend not-too-high-end
stuff :)
Thanks in advance..

Kodak photo hikes at Yellowstone/Grand Tetons NP
in Travel
Posted
Hi all,
I have been told that Kodak offers some kind of photo safaris for amateur
photographers visiting Yellowstone/ Grand Teton NP area. This sounds quite
exciting, as I am planning a visit to Yellowstone this summer. However, I could
not find any specific information online. I would like to know when the photo
hikes are offered, how frequently, how expensive, and the schedule for summer
2007. Also, if any of you actually took one of those hikes, it'd be great to
hear some feedback. Any and all info would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
