Thanks for the answers. Part of my confusion is the "signing and dating" part. The biggest paper I can currently use is 8 x 11. If I print an 8 x 10 image, there is no room to sign the picture. I was wondering if the image should be slightly smaller than 8 x 10 so I can sign it.
Any and all guidance is appreciated.

Count me in. Since I'm a newbie at this, I would appreciate an explanation of "Maybe print for matt consideration".
Thank you.

There's a great "I Love Lucy" routine involving Lucy and Harpo Marx. It might be fun to try to recreate something like that.

I've been satisfied with mpix. I've had 20 x 30 printed in color, and 10 x 15 in both color and black & white. Their b&w paper is true b&w.

I've had good luck with 20 x 30 prints from my Digital Rebel at mpix.com.

It was about thirty years ago. My mother and I were in New York for the bridal market. (Mom and Dad owned a bridal salon in Houston, Texas.) While going from one building to another, I saw a broken-down bakery truck with the driver under the hood trying to get his truck running again. He had his spare tire a few feet behind the truck as a warning to oncoming motorists. The tire was propped up with two loaves of French bread.

"the photograph should show it all without needing an explanation"
While that may be true, it's not always possible. In Friday's Houston Chronicle, there was an article about an iconic picture of Rosa Parks. It's a powerful picture, but the story behind it makes you realize that it's not what it seems.

Don Hill mentioned a cemetary on Broadway in Galveston. If you're interested in cemetary photography, be sure to go to Glenwood on Washington Avenue, and Forest Park on Lawndale. There are a lot of old time Houston families at both places.
There are also some great old churches in the area. A couple of my favorites are St. Anne's, at the corner of Westheimer and Shepherd, and South Main Baptist, around the 4800 block of Main Street. There are a couple more out in the Museum District.
See what you can do with the statue of Sam Houston in Hermann Park. I haven't had much luck with it, but I keep trying. I haven't tried that in the early morning, but think that might be the best time to shoot it.
Be sure to eat at Goode Company Barbeque on Kirby Drive. It's the best in town, IMHO.

I saw an interesting piece on Bruce Gilden on t.v. recently. His behavior could be considered overly agressive by some, but he said he's only had one physical confrontation on over twenty years of doing it. He gets fairly close to his subjects with a flash. It was really interesting.

I assume that this is the same show that was at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts earlier this year. It's a must see exhibit. It was exciting to see her prints of some of my favorite photographs, and it was fascinating to see the contact sheets and notes.
Don't miss it!
