you have to set the aperture on the lens to max then you can set the aperture on the D50

yes i do use the autopole system and you can just take oute the acustical tile 's above and expand it to the structual celing like you said i would call or b&h and explain your problem.

Karen, the r10 Message appers where the # of shots remaining normaily goes tis lets you know how many shots are left in the cameras buffer. i do not know why this would cause the camera to lock.

try useing the shutter mode set the shutter speed where you would like it and it will not drop below that iunless it is too dark the the shutter speed will drop

yes a 18 % grey would be better but the tan may work but there is no way to know without seeing it could you post a picture
