  1. Backlit by tint of the setting sun Arizona'a San Francisco Peaks are

lightly tinted in the early November sunsets red glow. Caught in the

reflection of a high country pond the beauty of this mountain is

    doubly enjoyable. Enjoy

    Orion Rising

Waiting for a glimpse or possibly a shot at the Northern Lights,

Orion Rising caught my eye. I figured better a little something

rather than nothing on this cold,13 degree, night . A one hour time

delay shot at F3.5 and Bulb . And no, I never did get a shot of the

Northern Lights. Just terribly cold!! Enjoy!

    WARY!!

There is a slight amount of camera shake from a combination of a strong wind and the use of a long lens. but the opertunity so rarely arises to get such a shot at less than seventy yards that I felt it was worth sharing, shake and all.

    WARY!!

A young bull elk castes a warried look in my direction as if to say,

What are you doing on my turf? Just a beautiful afternoon shared with

a gorgeous animal in the forests of Northern Arizona. Enjoy.

Very nicely done . I think, if it were me, I would have either shortened or lengthened the exposure time to either eliminate or excentuate the star trails , but still VERY nice !

Really good balance of color and composition. After reading your bio, I see that you and I are both reborn photographers, I had a forty year hiatis. But with the freedom of retirement i'm really back into it now, Keep up the great work.
  2. Bands of Virga proceed a late afternoon storm breaking across the

Mogollon Rim creating what I feel is probably the reddest sunset i've

ever witnessed. There is no enhancement either by the use of filters

    or computer enhancement.Enjoy. Gary

I normally shoot most of mine at bulb and 3.5 got for an hour, It usually depend on what the humidity level is and the amount of airglow on the particular night . I live at high altitude so the air is usually rather pristine . I'm thinking of doing a star trails and night travel series series with as many aircraft passing threw the plane of the shot as possible . But, like the reflections I have no idea how they will be accepted. I may have to wait until spring as its starting to get brutally cold at night. Thanks for the comment.I'm also pleased to hear all of we old TLR film shooters aren't gone. You might also want to give Fuji Provia 100 or Konica Impressa 50 a try on you star shots, i've had great success with both. I cropped the bottom, not the top. It's terribly difficult to try to figure out just what your getting when setting up in the dark and trying to focus on catching the stars in reflection. If anyone is curious as to the beautiful body of water I shoot this series in, e-mail me and i'll share its daylight beauty. Thanks gary

Chris brought up the question o coloration in this photo. Rarely do you get the velvety black you think you would get at night. A condition known as air glow arises when the atoms and molocules in the atmospher lose the solar energy they have absorded from the heat of the sun during the day. This is especially prevelant during periods of high solar activity. It is also effected by altitude, I live at 7000+ feet, and longitude. If you would like to see variations of the different colors of night skys caused by air glow go to my High Country Star Trails presentation. Thanks , Gary
