    Manu's cat...

"The photo is NICE indeed and the Author made his job quite well. However I regret to say that this is a big shame for the community and a sad truth about the participants of this forum that with their votes this photo became an overall #1 (or even that it got to the top overall photos at all). Unluckily this fact says a lot about the members of photo.net..."

Really? I didn't know that it was at the top of any (list). And I'm very sorry to hear that you think that the position of this image indicates... ([something...]...a lack of good perception and/or judgement by the members here)? I'm new here, but I'm not a photographer, (which is clearly stated in my info). But as a professional musician, I've found that the "laymen" in the audience often bring a fresh and unique perspective in their critiques of my performances. I have to admit, it's always flattering when another musician-- (someone that "knows" what they're talking about, :D)-- gives me highest regards. But I remind myself that the world is not full of professional musicians, and the majority of the audience will always be populated with those that only listen for pleasure.

I've wondered if many Photographers here would prefer that non-photographers do not give ratings. When thinking this through, I can see pros and cons of both scenarios; but one bonus, I think, of allowing the "laymen" in PN to participate is that we're neither vying for high marks on our own submissions-- as there aren't any--- nor attempting to vindicate ourselves by slapping a low mark for someone whose ratings we didn't like.

That's all, really, just that the ol' cliche about beauty & the beholder must be true. I'm amazed sometimes at the performances that some people thought were "great", and other performances that were yawned through. LOL!

Karel, it's funny how an element we see every day can just leap out and look like it's going to devour us. Not that it should be cropped, but I was wondering what people would think if they had only seen the "face". Okay, I was wrong, it's not going to devour anyone; it's already got something in its mouth! :D

One thing is certain, this is very unique. I love coming across things like this in nature. Very good eye you have there! ;)

Hey, you know, at first glance, I thought I was looking at the grate over a fireplace. LOL! Still liked the colors, and the decorative metal part, though. I see the colors have been mentioned, but I would like to compliment you on the frame. To me, it is one of the most perfect examples of a frame that adds to the art inside, but is part of the art itself. I really love the way you did that. I come to a complete blank when it comes to choosing frames for anything; but it doesn't prevent me from recognizing when it's been well done by another!

I was waiting for my comp to bring this in focus. LOL! Well, I'm not going to plug in a rating, because I'm not a Photographer, and sometimes I think I may be missing something.

I don't believe that all pictures have to be "crystal clear"; some of the most thought provoking or simply exquisite photos I've seen were just the opposite. But here, there seems to be a missing element. I say that because aside from that deep red of the person's garment, I only see the darkness of the other's garb, and then, just neutral sand. But, there is nothing else here for me to latch on to, (and before anyone offers me up to be burned at the stake, I *did* say "for me").

Now, here's where I fail in my critique, which is why I'm only commenting, but leaving no "mark". I can't offer you advice on what could have been done with lenses, or film, or equipment... But maybe a Photographer will jump in and say something quite helpful.

Only thing I could add as a non-professional is that if this had some kind of emotional impact, or even some kind of visual contrast to keep the viewer's gaze, it would be more effective. Hope you don't mind my say-so. :)

  1. The brilliant shades and that almost periwinkle of the sea, it's supremely lovely. One of the best things about this is how the silhouetted figures turned out. They were caught in such a great moment, (I think the little one is levitating ;)  ), but they provide a very effective contrast against the background.

By the way, I had a dream that was almost exactly like this when I was very little. A bit eerie to see it here in photo.net. LOL!

"Looks like he is stepping on glass - the reflection is so clear. Nice lighting and great lines."

Yes, I agree, because you caught this at the perfect moment. And when I think about it, this merits a double or triple take, because one never sees a large feline caught in such a pose. Maybe he knew you were there, wanted his name in "lights". : )Great capture of this moment!

I was scouring through the photos in the "last 3 months" category. The thumbnail caught me whilst on my visual rampage. One of the aspects I saw and appreciated immediately was the color of the eyes harmonizing with that of the grass. And the sky, it looks like something from a fantasy book, but it belongs here. At one point, the clouds seemed to move, but yah, I have been on this site for some time today.:P
  2. "I haven't seen work with such powerful psychological undercurrents in a long, long while. There is something very magical about your work..."

I searched for words to attribute to your picture, but it's already been said. : ) This is very powerful, and gripping. Each time I look, something new is presented. This is incredible.

  3. This is indeed lovely, and invokes an emotional response from me. How very unique! I read a comment that suggetsed cropping. In this picture, I think *a little* bit of cropping to the bottom would bring more focus to those beautiful shadows. Still, it is nice to see the way the longest shadows melt very serenely into the deeper tones.
  4. I immediately thought this was beautiful. The composition is a big part of the appeal for me, along with the balance of colors--the green stabs out from the foremost rocks, and the more muted (brownish-red?) goes against that nicely. I adore the effect that the motion has on the water, but the lighting also lends itself very well to its satiny quality. What I noticed right before my eyes left the picture was how the dangling leaves in the top right add yet another "feeling" to the the scene as a whole. I like that. The frame makes this the complete package, it's "just right". : )

I adore the contrasting colors in your picture. The warm ones seem to be radiant from within, and then there's that glorious sky against it, offering so many sweet blues! Know what, this is great with all that open sky, I like the feeling that it all "continues" after my eye reaches the peak of the subject. But if it were to be cropped, it would also work. Without a doubt, a magnificent image.

I really like this! It immediately pulled me into its otherworldly embrace. But when I began to look further, I realized how crisply the leaves in the foreground stand against the shadowed areas, and with such brilliance. Finally, my eye travelled to the lower left, and there's that cool shock of electric water, just enough to add a new feeling, but not detracting from the green wonder of it all. (Can you tell I like it? :P )

Ahhh, this is great! To answer your questions:

No, don't crop! The nature of the colors, lighting, and objects around the mirror enhance the subject.

The glowing copper and the subtle greyish-green(?) look good in this picture. Me likey!

Whoa. Can light & shadow play get any better? I was immediately stricken when I saw this. The brilliance of that green against the greys adds enormous beauty.7/7
