  1. Yes, Al!

I just called my phone Co. hanged up a few times when males answered the call, until a lady came up and helped me right away. With boychiks it's either "unfortunately, that's unavailable" or "a part of a package" or "can you hold please" or "our computer network is down"... They are less flexible and their attention span is something else.. Fun to observe though.

The question was about new iteration of Portra btw

  2. extended warranty that extends the *limited* manufacturers warranty against the defects of the manufacturing process may be useless in majority of cases, ritz uses various underwriters from time to time, so talk to the store manager. in most cases if you bring the camera and the packaging in the store and they see you are not buying a warranty for a dead camera, i.e. it's a bona fide transaction they will gladly sell you one. depends on the store, district, region/state it may include one annual free sensor cleaning and I have seen the cases of unlimited cleanings, depends on the store manager, etc. talk to them, locate the stores by your zip code from their website, make a few calls. mornings are better, ask for a manager, his name, how big is the store, ask for some items, whether they are in stock or special order, get the feel, etc. some ritz stores are horrible, some are excellent.. 2-year deal is usually the optimal value.. yes, digital bodies are not your fm2 or f3, they are simply computers with a lot of moving parts (still there) and a lens attached - what an anachronism!

the way it stands ritz is underwritten by Now! and the policy covers everything but loss/theft and fire, everything else is fine and it is international

  3. depends on who is printing.. it's an excellent film if your lab knows to turn Autocorrect to off and play with tone adjustments (for Fuji Frontier). I was able to achive the ortho look, the tin print look, etc.

    great film!

it goes without saying you will not aproach the tonal scale of APX 100 or TX for that matter, but it beats BW conversions from neg color films

  4. All,

I was asked to develop aroll of what is labeled on canister as PROMAX 400

professional black and white film. Web search did not bring anything. By the way

it looks and feels it resembles TMY. Just wanted to ask if anybody ever ran into

    this miracle of marketing.

    TIA

  5. at the last wedding we had guests with D50, D70, D70s, D200, D2x, all drebels, several 30D and 5D, one with the 1 Ds and H2.. one guest asked me whether I had a bw film to sell him (Leica MP), given the choice of trix, plusx, apx, hp5, bw400cn and a few more he went for trix without hesitation... the visual culture of the crowd was quite high - one could see that easily judging by the way they took their own pictures.. several folks had flash slaves and various diffusors... the groom put on an exquisitie slide show in dancing area: their love story visual chronicles - the couple was beyond 'style' they do possess 'taste' - not an ordinary couple.. it was a pleasure working that crowd.. [we shoot both films and digi]
  6. 28-75/2.8 Tamron is surprisingly good optically; Of the Canon zooms 24-70L trumps 24-105L optically when it comes to the quality of the blur, although most are obsessed with the "sharpness" nowadays..

IMO, the shooting culture so to speak of the baby-zoomers is way below compared to primers, akin to communicating via instant messengers vs leter writing. although from the business side it doesn't really matter

  7. I shoot Canon primarily, but in your case I would strongly consider Nikon.

You already own a Metz, and Nikons are much friendlier with Metzen.

SB-800 on the Nikon side is way more affordable than 580EX from Canon, multiply that by n

Also, on the used market you can get 10 items for Nikon for an equivalent Canon piece. In the long run Canon is more expensive when you build the system up.. although Nikon has nothing comparable to my 85L

  8. much better than any $300 stuff from Canon. great bokeh at 75mm focal length in my experience. Canon 24-70L beats it when it comes to AF speed easily, but image quality comparison is a function of sample variance..

btw, for $300 it's a steal, I could not find one for that price

  9. The Nikon equivalent is great for B&W since it fringes quite a bit in color. My wife prefers the 85L because.. it's slow. She says it belongs to different shooting culture like instant messaging vs letter writing..

Go figure. Yet she is able to back her view up with pictures I will never be able to create.

  10. Hi All,

Just swapped one of my srt's for one of those with 50/1.4.

I heard that the circuitry is insensitive to the voltage jump to 1.5V

in case I use a modern battery. How about impedance dances? What

exactly is the type recommended please?

What lenses do stand out in the screwmount line please?

    TIA, Y

  11. "When you need 1.4, you need 1.4."

You need a good 1.4, not the Canon one. One could try competition first. All Canon's fifties are poorly designed and overpriced. Barrel distortion is a signature fature for one.

The Canon 85L is a superstar though.. At any f value

Lucas, your post is a good service for newbies. Most of them are mislead by raving reviews of 1.4 owners who never owned a better lens.

  12. I agree with Jamie: different rules.. As an ad shooter you can give them a different look the'd never get from a traditional craftsman. In other words: they have a unique chance to get a non-conventional family session, etc.

Just keep in mind that a traditional doesn't necessarily mean banal and non-conventional may fail to translate into fresh and original.. but that's a whole different opera.

  13. All,

I am contemplating a few backup bodies for my EOS 3 bunch, and I can

get new 7E for $150 and new 7NE for $270. Is there enough feature-set

difference to go for the N please? Shooting events and people.

    TIA

  14. "work like hell and advertise" they say.. we all practice constantly, but looking at your work with light and geometry you could start giving seminars right away..

craigslist attracts certain type of clientelle that is satisfied by lowballers.. mostly, not all.. there are still folks low on budget but not low on style

with your level of skill you will be in demand pretty quickly.. I would go and assist a bit to learn 'american way' of assembly line art.
