1. Yeah, I'll echo some of the other posters regarding buying from China. I've purchased small, extremely inexpensive items successfully, but the one time I purchased a lens it arrived broken. The seller was wiling to take it back, but the return shipping would have cost about half of the price of the lens itself. So be careful.
 2. I'm not sure precisely when it will happen, but the A7ii is the Sony mirror less model due next for an update. So yes, it may be advantageous to wait a while. Also, just so you know, some A7Rii owners are saying that it doesn't handle long exposures (over 30 seconds) well - it seems to yield noisy images under these conditions, at least according to some. I haven't heard of this happening with the A7ii, but it might warrant some research.
 3. Metabones makes the best EF to e mount adapters, and periodically issues firmware updates to improve functionality. A recent update was designed to give native functionality to adapted lenses, at least for stills. I'm not sure if this translates to video AF as well....
 4. Weather here (I'm in the Boston area) is unpredictable. It was over 70 degrees this past Christmas Eve! The potential for snow storms is always there though, and we're generally advised to stay off the roads DURING them, but we're used to snow and the roads typically get cleared quickly. Someone may have pointed this out (I haven't read all of the responses) but I would definitely rent a four wheel drive vehicle - it can make a significant difference with ice and snow. Do that and you should be just fine.
 5. Looked up both tamrons and they sound pretty good. But I keep coming across references to these old zooms flaring a lot due to the coatings/lack thereof used at the time. Is this a big consideration in real world shooting?
 6.
Thanks guys. The FD 35-105 and Vivitar 28-90 sound good, but probably heavier than I want to deal with. Would LOVE an EF 24-70, but alas, it's not in the cards at this point. I may pick up a Minolta md 35-70 f/3.5 actually - cheap and seems to fit the bill.

Louis, I don't suppose you've had a chance to compare your Sony 28-70 to the 24-70, have you? Mine doesn't even match a $50 Sigma 28-70 f/2.8-4 that I have....

 7.
Hmmm....hadn't really considered primes for this. I was planning on going with an ultrawide zoom and normal zoom, and think I'd miss all the intermediate focal lengths, though some of those CV lenses are so tiny I could easily carry a couple....

 8.
Hi all. I'm interested in picking up something like a 24-70 or 28-85, or even, though preferably not, 35-70mm, to take hiking with my a7rii. This will be for stopped down use on a tripod, and autofocus will be unnecessary, so old manual focus lenses with adapters would be fine and I'm wondering what's out there that might fit the bill. The lighter (and cheaper) the better.
I do have the Sony kit lens (28-70) and while it is certainly light and cheap, I've found it to be a pretty poor lens. I've considered simply upgrading to the 24-70 f/4, but funds are low and I already have a standard zoom for non-hiking situations, so I'd like to avoid going that route if possible.
I'm looking to keep weight around 450g or less. I'm also open to AF lenses if there are any to consider: maybe Minolta, or even one of the million old Canon normal zooms if there are any that are good enough stoppped down. Any thoughts?

 9. Another feature to consider is the autofocus system - the a7rii (and a7ii as well after a recent firmware update I believe) can autofocus canon lenses with an adapter. There is even an adapter coming on the market that will autofocus Nikon lenses. May or may not be important to you; for me it was essential - I've able to replace a canon 5d Mark II with an a7rii and use all of my canon and canon mount lenses.
 10.
yeah, i'm looking into possibly picking up a 6d, perhaps through greentoe.

 11.
ok, i will wait at least a few days before powering up.

bob, do you think i'd do better with a couple of dessicant packages in a ziploc bag than having the camera surrounded by rice? i can always remove the camera and go that route...

 12. Thanks everyone. I guess I will wait 24 hours or so. As I pulled the camera and tripod out of the lake I thought "I guess this means I'll have to get a 5ds." The reality however is that it will be hard enough to get another 5d2. So....fingers crossed.
 13. Yup, no pantyhose handy, but I cannibalized an old camping tent - cut the mesh out and wrapped the camera up. It was still on when I pulled it out of the lake, so I'm hoping that means it might be ok.
 14. Thanks les. I did take the battery out. I will keep the rice away from the mirror and sensor, but do you think I should everything else open? (Alas, no insurance).
 15. Well, it finally happened- just dropped my 5d mark II in a lake, where it was submerged for a few seconds. Hoping to salvage it, so I've got all the ports opened up and thought I might as well try putting it in some rice as some websites say to try....but don't want to get rice stuck inside. Anyone tried this before? Closing up the ports would keep the rice out, but wouldn't that just keep the moisture in? Help!
