  1. I was recently contacted by an author to use a (fairly) recent pic in one of his books - he had located it thru google by putting in the name of the restaurant, the town and "pictures." When you google it, it links to my entire portfolio as well as a selected quote from my portfolio comments...

Cool, but scary too. I'm glad he was honourable and respected the copyright (no more about THAT - I like this thread).

  2. "...and stand behind those postings with their real name, will not be asked to pay."

Several members gave valid reasons in a since-deleted post as to why they do not use their "real name." I'll save you the trouble of coming up with yet-another defense of your position on this subject by offering the analogy of having an unlisted phone number. We have to pay for that right to privacy, as well.

  3. Banoota - another recommendation, that may be mentioned in the sources you've been linked to - is to use a 1:4 vinegar bath. It markedly brightens reds, as well as improves other colours some....Another thing to try is to gently rub off the leftover sticky emulsion under water - I like to experiment with removing only parts of that for a more 3-D effect. You can also lighten specific areas of the print with a vinegar dilution and a Q-tip (make sure to wash well afterwards). There are a lot of fun techniques to try with this medium (including scanning, printing on watercolour paper and then using a <a href="http://www.photo.net/photo/2571487">wet watercolour brush</a> on the print) - best of luck to you!
  4. Thanks, but at the time that I wrote the forum question the Blue Gift Box was "missing" from all the home pages that _I_ checked. Hence my question. Indeed, it is back as of today - and I was hoping that it had been removed for some changes (being able to give more than a year at a time without doing it 3X one year, for example)- but sadly not.

I HAD checked the archives, and discovered that in May (?), Pnina Evental had asked precisely the same original question I had - but without resolution, apparently. I'll just write Brian for MY refund of $7, as well!

  5. about the same things - whether old or revised - ad infinitum. I see it as a way for the newbies to easily get a grasp on the PN culture without having to scroll thru the archives! Plus, it's also occasionally a refreshing and amusing review...

Nanette - several of the people here have given you the answer - it's a matter of finding those who GIVE thoughtful critiques, add them to your "Favorite People" list and then reciprocate. Typically they also have friends with similar habits, who then include YOU into the group. I'm no sociologist, but PN works best like that .. you'll start to see the patterns once you've been here a while.

Welcome to PN, by the way...Lee

  6. I don't own a long lens but I've rented the 80-200mmf2.8 zoom several times over the last couple of years to use on my N90, and it's pretty heavy. I always have to have a hold of it - by the lens barrel itself - which I don't find bothers me. I don't consider the weight uncomfortable, and I'm a woman with somewhat better than average upper body strength (I lift weights partially just so I can tote around camera gear easily). However, my usage of it has been in situations where I can esily set the whole thing down if necessary and not worry about it.

That said, I intend to buy one of these lenses just as soon as I have the money saved....I suggest you try to borrow or (if possible) rent each of the lenses to see how you like them, as well as considering how much you might need the extra stops..I do a lot of low light shooting so it is important to me - it may be different for you. Have fun!

  7. as pointed out above, it wouldn't take obviously low rates to significantly affect a pic's averages. "Abuse" might find it pretty amusing if people started considering a bunch of 4/4's or even 5/5's abusive - and yet that is precisely what it can be. The problem is not solved by a "few" people rating properly, cuz they get discouraged (or fed up or enraged) and just stop rating, as Howard and Carl have noted. No, the problem lies in the rating system itself - as has been pointed out - ad infinitum, ad nauseum. And here we go again, hmmm?
