***Imho*** :
- he puts form before content (Rodinal, over-ex) and is going against the HCB credo (for whom technique should be invisible)
- worse, he simply recycles the visual style popularized by Japanese photographers of the 70's (ex. Moriyama circa 1971)
therefore it is not surprising he encounters difficulties at Magnum. And RE his popularity I've seen his "Leica Award" book at bargain price (like 10 Euros) recently. Maybe I should get it before it becomes the new "The Americans"...

"when the sun is shining I am often quite often up in f11/f16 territory"
why don't you buy one of these "gray" filters that suck up one or two stops and allow you to be around f.8 in sunny situations with a 400 Iso film?

How much is it worth? About 5 Reichmarks...

"Too much photoflo, wash the films, redo the wetting agent"
Is this thing possible? I thought (wrongly?) that wetting agent stains are not removable...

"the car has definitely replaced the horse"
Meataphor for metaphor do you mean "the take-away food has replaced the delicious meal" cos it's faster?

One more word about Salgado : a friend of mine who lives in Paris just informed me that since Salgado is going digital he has just decided to sell to one photo gear shop a quite large amount of Leica lenses & cameras.
The "funny" part is Salgado never paid for it in the 1st place cos it was GIVEN by Leica... (probably as part of an endorsement deal). Most of the gear is new, ununsed, since Seb probably never had a use for a large majority of the flood of stuff he was sent.
This is very questionable on 2 levels : why hoard a piece of equipement you know you'll never use and why not politely return it to its maker? And how can you make money out of sth you never bougth in the 1st place...

Buy the book "Looking In" (Steidl). It's the "Frank in 56-58" Bible!

Funny to see Salgado trying to plant trees while his Prez Lula Da Silva is CHOPPING down the Amazonian forest to grow genetically-modified soja...

"an all-white grand piano with gold accents, the veritable apotheosis of suburban elegance."
You don't share Axl Rose's tastes do you?

I was kidding of course! But this white thing of vanity doesn't look so bad imo.

-

"that's bad, Salgado is dumping his Leicas!"

Haven't I read that he goes digital... partly to avoid having his films X-ray'ed at airports.

(phony excuse imho).

"taking influence from trent parke"

Not to put the guy down but half of his results come from heavy darkroom pots-prod.

I WILL buy it (no matter what the price) and it will look good on my desk next to my Intel Imac loaded with "Snow Leopard" OS... (a perfect match!)

"I am not from Europe, but I know that you just send it to Lausanne, and it will be couriered to Dwayne's"

True but it's a tad more complex than this : in Europe Kodachrome's retail price includes Dwayne's processing and the air fare. Sounds good? Not really since the price of one Kodachrome film is about 17€/22$...

50mm and 35 are rather close imo. You might need a 75 or a 90 or... nothing at all! In this case your wide will love you and you'll be a happy man.

All the dirty things he witnessed/heard... May he goes to heaven! RIP.

PS : Aldo Moro was not killed by the Brigade Rosso but by a special commando of Italian spooks who acted within the Gladio operation in cooperation with the C!A...

"it originates from the Royal french language, which disappeaed from France and most of her colonies in the late 18th century, as the French Revolution intellectuals and those of the Ile de France region brought in a new french."

Completely OT but it is more likely a RURAL French that the Québécois in their wisdom managed to keep. My Mom finds in Québec French, expressions and use of words she was brought up with nearly 65 years ago in the rural France.
Luckily I learnt some of these words/expressions ;-)

Thanks for the link, Carl. In retrospect I realize I threw away quite some good fixer... I was fooled by the 7-days rule which was ill-explained in the 90's Ilford brochure I had...

"Anything on the auction site which is heavily scratched, cleaning marks, haze and fungus"
Anything that's labelled "near mint" or "exc" by the seller, then?

It was a 50mm 1.4 ASPH M series lens.

"Do you use UV filter to protect your lens ?"
Yes but it was covered in fog pretty quickly so I decided to take it off. It's an (expensive) B+W MRC UV filter.
http://www.schneideroptics.com/ecommerce/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?CID=722&IID=6141
The "funny" thing is for a decade I carried an unexpensive (= not MRC) B+W UV filter on my 60's 'Cron and I never had a single fog problem. Now with this expensive item whenever it's a tad cold, I feel like I'm in a David Hamilton shooting. Hence my obligation that fateful day to take it off my lens and put it in my pocket.

Now it's back to normal :-) but the fungus problem might arise one day. Maybe I SHOULD have bought a Leica filter instead ;-)

Thanks!

Hello,

I am informally planning a trip to S.F. and I'd like to know if I would be able to easily find film dealers who can sell me 100 or 200 TRI-Xs 135 in one pop? And what would be the price (incl. VAT if possible)?

Thx!

"Place it on a warm, dry surface and the water will evaporate"
I just did this and the haze's gone. It took a consedirable amount (10hrs?) of time it looks fine now.
thx! I'm ready for another rainy day ;-)

"Salgado knows what he's doing and is unlikely to accept compromise..."
Well let's say when you use PS to enhance your pix and render them more "iconic" (sth he wasn't allowed to do at Magnum of course) digital is the way to go : no more need to scan the negs...
Therefore you can get away with murder : no one can compare the silver contact sheet with the exhibition print
