  1. Tommy, I like it, but it doesn't wow me. Not sure whether it should - it's a nice, peaceful scene which probably shouldn't wow in the first place. :-)

I agree with all the previous comments: the curved road leads to the church, the strong diagonals of the hillside I like them all. Since I wasn't blown away at first I thought hard what I might do differently, so here are my two cents: In my opinion, the white gate competes with the church a bit. I would prefer not to have it in the frame. The curved road leads to some lonely church ... Whether it is possible to have the curving road without the gate  I don't know. I might have tried to climb that little wall on the right of the gate to get the curving road and omit that little sliver of sky. Ideally I'd go for the church, the curved road and the green diagonals of the hillside. Would it work? Maybe, probably not, but I thought I''d  share my thoughts.

  2. Interesting colors and great scene. I like the sun hanging in there. Unfortunately poor processing gives it a very artificial look. The halo between the bow and the water makes me wonder whether the ship ever was there, and there are a few funky things going on in the mast and the railings of the ship where a washed out sky meets the warm sunset colors.

  3. Well, it's obviously highly processed (lots of noise ?) and hand-holding 1/10 didn't work so well. On the other hand, it seems to be an amazing location and I would have tried to capture it as well. The obvious solution might have been a tripod and a much longer exposure time at lower ISO to eliminate the camera shake and noise. Without a tripod I might have looked for a big rock to brace myself against. Another solution might have been to take a dozen images and hope that one works. Finally, I might have tried to take a lot of underexposed images (so the shutter speed is higher) and stack them in Photoshop to eliminate the noise.

I mention all these options, because I've been in similar locations where I really wanted a picture but didn't have the obvious tools available. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

This image reflects the cool moist atmosphere of a warm summer day in the forest perfectly. OK, maybe it's just my wishful thinking after too many 90+ degree weeks on the east coast, but it looks very inviting to take a seat.

I agree. The lighting and mood are wonderful. If it was my image I would have stressed the formality of the setting a bit more, keeping it a bit straighter. But that's probably just the boring scientist in me. In any case, I love the mood and feel of the image.

  4. Ah, look at all the tephras and paleosols. A beautiful spot. As far as the tent rocks go, they are, in my opinion, a little bit lost between the trees, shrubs, canyon walls etc. Nevertheless, your image brings back fond memories.

    green leaves

I agree - it is a nice delicate image. I like the graceful curve of the vine and leaves. As far as the background goes: I recall a time when big, fat hexagonal out-of-focus highlights were all the rage (not to speak of the donut highlights that showed that you could afford a mirror lens - I never could :-).

    A beautiful result Timo!

I agree with the previous comments. Love the sky, but the thin bright line in the center of the image between the foreground trees and the mountains is distracting.

This is a puzzling image. The leaf seems to define one set of scale (a few inches), but the water ripples seem much bigger. In any case, I like the color contrast and composition. Well done.

    Stickle Tarn

    Brian,

I ran across this image by accident (it was at the bottom of the mirrorless monday) page. I didn't know what it was, but right away it reminded me of the Lake District. Now, I have been to the Lake District once, 3 decades ago when I was in high school. After checking my travel log from those days, the closest I came to Stickle Tarn was Bowfell on a somewhat roundabout hike from the Eskdale Youth Hostel to Scafell. So, I'd say you captured the spirit oof the landscape very well. I like the composition with the edge of the tarn down the middle, but the symmetry broken by the boulders on the right. It shows just enough sky to convey the general mood. Well done, and thanks for the memories.

    summer storm

One of the storms that brought welcomed relief from the current heat.

Even in northern Maine it was in the mid-eighties! I felt a grainy b/w

is a bit more impressive than the original color image. thanks for

stopping by, and your comments, critiques, suggestions are always

    appreciated.

    cirrus clouds

Thank you, I am glad you like it. I struggled with the lower edge and am still not happy with it. Well, this week's it all work no play anyway, so maybe later inspiration will strike me.

    cirrus clouds

You just insulted my home state. :-) No worries Jose, you are absolutely correct! The clouds were amazing, the land is - well, western Connecticut, which is known for its subtle beauty rather than breathtaking landscapes.

I actually thought long and hard about cropping the hill. That would have turned the image into an abstract. Yesterday, however, having just hiked that hill and a dozen more in a very humid 90 degrees I felt it was right to give those hills their dues and crop the image as a landscape rather than an abstract. Those two options had already been on my mind when taking the photo. I included the hills because I wanted to keep my options and I only carried one lens which did not allow me to zoom in any farther. A final reason was that I couldn't come up with a really good crop at the base of the clouds.

Thank you for your comment Jose. It always good to learn how others see one's images, and I add a  little bonus crop.
